back with a vengeance

Since my last post a few things have happened.

First of all :

SPAIN HAS WON THE EUROPEAN SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP !!!

Ole, ole, ole !!!

Sorry about that, normally I'm not a sportsfan and I don't watch soccer games either but it's another beast entirely for the world championship or the european championship. And especially if Spain is participating. This year's european championship has been special also because....well, usually the spanish selection has bad luck. Normally we get eliminated at the quarter finals. The last time Spain passed the quarter finals was 24 years ago. So this year I just had to watch it.

I have been supporting the spanish selection ( like all of Spain ) since the quarter finals and it just got better and better. Especially when Spain finally won the european championship after 45 years. And not only did they win but they won in such a superior manner and playing just spectacularly. They were top in all categories : they won all their games, the received the least goals, they scored most goals, they received the least cards.....etc,etc,etc....

And to top it all off there were no big shot superstars in the spanish selection. Just a good team of young professionals working together like a well oiled machine. It reminded me a bit of the last world championship where Germany was absolutely brilliant and even though they only scored third place everybody in Germany was celebrating like they had won. This championship had the same feeling of high intensity, fun and explosiveness. Another parallel is that like Juergen Klinsman the spanish coach was critisized a lot before the championship and afterwards everybody was begging him to stay. Anyway, this year the spanish selection made history and now Saint Iker and his guys are national heroes.

But enough about soccer and back to comics and what I've been up to. In my last post I wrote a bit about the problems I had......well, I wrote a bit more than what you can read on the blog but apparently my time at the internet cafe was up before I managed to post all I had written. I was still waiting for the comics I ordered from my comic shop in Germany - because I ran out of money here and since I still haven't got a job the only money I could get my hands on is the money in my bank account in Germany. While I'm writing this the comics have already arrived but I'm still waiting for an answer to my latest e - mails. It took one week to get an answer to my first e - mail, one week from my order to the order confirmation and two weeks from the day of shipping till they finally arrived here in Spain. So four weeks all in all.

I didn't get all comics I ordered and I still don't know if the comics are from my pull list or additional copies. So far I only know that I have to pay the regular price.

I also wrote in my last post that it was like the last days of earth out here in la pobla de Montornes. First of all it's pretty isolated out here and if you have ran out of reading material and all that's left to read are old copies of THE HAUNT OF FEAR you start to get weird ideas. Especially when your house is full of marrocanos who would be better of if they killed you. There are not a lot of shops out here. And to top it all of the oil prices had reached astronomical levels which lead to a truck driver strike.

So on one side you have people fighting at the gas station even though it costs a fortune. On the other side you have all truckers on strike which in turn prevents goods of all sorts to reach super markets. So they run out of stuff and people start to buy things like crazy. So in the end the super markets have more and more empty shelves. People fighting about food or the last bottle of Coke - which reminds me a bit of Peter Bagge's APOKOLYPSE NERD....which I bought at this year's Salon del Comic de Barcelona.

With which we're back to the comic part of this blog. While I was waiting for my comics to arrive I listened to my two CDs with the ComicGeekSpeak episodes ( I think I would have gone mad without them ) and I also wrote a review I'm posting in my next post. For now I've been writing long enough and I have only one hour left on the battery ( I'm writing this on our new laptop ) so that's all for today. Maybe I can finish my picture archive also. So till my next post.....remember : it's all about peace, love and comic books.

    AVENGERS / JLA

The last few days I have been listening to the footnotes episodes of ComicGeekSpeak about the AVENGERS / JLA four issue prestige crossover miniseries written by Kurt Busiek and drawn by George Perez that was published in 2003.

Now you may ask : what is a footnote episode ?

The guys form ComicGeekSpeak do their normal episodes with interviews, off the racks, stump the Rios and the usual stuff and then there are the special episodes. Like Indie spinner rack spotlighting the indie creators, the con specials and of course the Book of the Month episodes which are my favorites and which introduced me to some great comics like DEATHNOTE a true manga masterpiece.

But while the Book of the Month club episodes are pretty lenghty there is sometimes not enough time to talk about every little bit of information about such big comic projects like AVENGERS / JLA. Especially when a writer who knows his continuity so well like Kurt Busiek is involved. I know, there are some comic readers who hate continuity. And that´s just normal. When I was in school I hated geography - because it was something I was not good at. I couldn´t wrap my head around the subject and my father who had served in the U.S. Navy and could have taught me a lot of geography from his first - hand experience pretty much left me alone. So I had bad grades because I was not good at geography.

But that´s okay. And the same is true with continuity. There are some people who never get their head around it and can´t remember all the little bits of trivia that appear in comics now and then. But I like continuity. I just love it when Batman tells Amanda Waller in one comic that he thinks he is better suited to deprogramm somebody and she reminds him with one short line that he was brainwashed in a past adventure. Now that is done with the mention of one name and for the reader who doesn´t know what they are talking about it is strange - but the comic continuity guy just remembers the Batman miniseries THE CULT and instantly sees the cool Bernie Wrightson art flashing before his inner eye.

So the footnote episodes are full of comic book trivia for your inner geek. The two hosts of the show are of course Peter Rios ( walking superhero encyclopedia and the man to beat at stump the rios ) and Adam Murdock ( king of comic book trivia ) who are just two fountains of comic knowledge.

By the way, I hope I spelled Adam Murdock´s name right. I tried but I couldn´t find his name on the ComicGeekSpeak homepage. So I picked the spelling I was familiar with. Now I just wonder if that is the right spelling is he the lost Daredevil brother ? And who was really in the Daredevil costume while Matt was in jail ? Maybe someone from ComicGeekSpeak ?

Unlike the Book of the Month club episodes it´s not so much about the story and more a page by page ( and sometimes panel by panel ! ) review of all the hidden earter eggs in the 4 issues. Because the other reason for this extra episodes was that George Perez packed so much detail into every little panel of the comic that you need a travel guide not to miss it.

George Perez is not only one of the best comic artists ever and a master storyteller. No he also is the wizard of panel layouts with breathtaking perspectives that lesser artists whish they could pull off. But his greates strenght is that nobody packs as many people on a comic page.

Which is the reason why he does so many anniversary promo pieces for the Avengers. Counting in the fact that he was the artist on both books and he was also the artist who should have drawn it 20 years before it was published you know why he put so much work in it.

There are small things in every panel that build on the history of the Avengers or the JLA and on the cover to issue 3 everyone who was ever a member. The footnotes episode on the cover alone is 2 hours and 45 minutes long !!!

And that´s the least you can do for a cover that gave George Perez carpal tunnel syndrome and was the reason why the last issues were delayed. That´s real dedication to his craft.

So if you always wondered who the hairy dude right behind the Invisible Woman on the cover to issue three is or why the DC heroes never intervened in the second World War according to the DC continuity you should check the footnote episodes out. Even if you are not that much of a continuity geek maybe you will enjoy it. Of course it´s full of spoilers like the Book of the Month episodes but the book has been out so long now that you should have read it. Listening to the episodes I remembered why George Perez second run on the Avengers was number two on my list of favorite Avengers runs.

Number one is clearly the second John Buscema / Tom Palmer run that included such great Avengers classics like WAR ON OLYMPUS and UNDER SIEGE the storyline that introduced the THUNDERBOLTS. And number three is the run by Alan Davis which was only six issues long but for me is one of the best.

On the second run of George Perez on Avengers there were some really fantastic stories like the ULTRON story which I bought also in the german version. One of the few things PANINI did right was to put this story in one comic and since it had nice glossy paper I just had to buy it. Because the original version had this paper that made all the color look faded and dark. Anyway it was a brilliant story with outstanding moments like when the battered Avengers confronted Ultron. Or when Justice saved the day though he had broken legs and could not fight.

We also were introduced to Triathlon and Silverclaw who was not only a spanish speaking superhero ( yay ! ) but she also took on Diablo single handedly. She was adopted by the Avengers own butler Jarvis and is one of the most original new characters introduced in the pages of the Avengers.

And of course the run also introduced the Scarlett Witch´s gypsy costume designed by George Perez. No wonder Alan Davis felt the need to use a simpler costume on his issues of Avengers.

Back to AVENGERS / JLA it´s one of my favorite comics. It has everything a big crossover needs. Two superhero teams fighting against each other in little one - on - one or two - on - two fights as well as in a big free - ro - all battle royal.

And of course the two greatest superhero teams finding similarities and working together.

The fate of whole universes and multiverses in the balance.

Cosmic beings like the Watcher or the Grandmaster and plans within plans.

Cameo appearances by guys like the Phantom Stranger or Snapper Carr. Oh.....and giant alien worldconquering starfish monsters. And little facehugging ones too.

Marvel heroes fighting DC heroes. Marvel heroes fighting DC villains and vice versa. DC and Marvel villains teaming up.

And that´s all for today. Tomorrow is my big day and altough it´s one year less than on this picture I want to put it here anyway since I don´t know if I get to post tomorrow. So here´s a happy anniversary to myself.

And since he has his birthday at the same day as me I also want to wish Arnold Schwarzenegger a happy anniversary.

    Alles Gute zum 60ten Gebutstag.

Todays clips are made by fans of the JLA and the Avengers. Enjoy !

    Solicitations again

Today it´s been really steaming hot throughout the day. Since it´s been a while that I have written down my thoughts about the newest solicitations I thought today is just the right day to do it.

When I did my first section with comments on the solicitaions I thought it would turn into a monthly thing where I had the chance to rant about which comics I´m psyched about, what I can´t wait to read or just speculate about the books I don´t read. And which books I would add to my reading pile if I just had more money.

Right now I´m sitting at my computer while listening to episode 264 of ComicGeekSpeak while sipping on my lemon beer. So let´s see if I can finish this post ( and my beer ) before ten when I have to prepare to tape PRISON BREAK, NUMBERS and THE UNIT. I´m so glad that in Germany they send all good tv shows at the same day at the same time. Not that we would like to watch something good on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It´s like the next MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movie starring me trying to tape it all.

4 episodes. 3 tv series. 3 cassettes. 2 tv stations. 1 man trying to tape it all. How much can one man take before he goes ballistic ? Angry fat guy - movie at eleven.

Since I´m writing this post semi - drunk I hope there are not too many spelling errors. But let´s get to the solicitations.

The covers by Art Adams alone are worth the price of admission but since there is some old content the comic is not on my pull list. Because this falls clearly into the category where you want to see the actual comic before buying it. If I see it in the comic shop or at a convention I might buy it but I won´t buy it without knowing what´s inside.

Another comic I probably won´t buy. I´m a huge George Perez fan and for me THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD is one of the best series that has come out this year. I would say it´s in my top five list. But the hardcover is just outside my price range and I have all the issues anyway.

Speaking about THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD this cover has me all excited. I mean Wonder Woman AND Power Girl in one comic drawn by George Perez. What more can you want ?

The possibilities are endless : girl on girl action, wet t - shirts, pijama party and the likes. I smell boob war, brother.

I really would like to have this book on my pull list. Ever since the POWER OF SHAZAM series by Jerry Ordway BLACK ADAM has been one of my favorite characters. And even more so when they changed him from one - dimensional villain to multi - facetted struggling hero out of his time in the pages of JSA. Riding on the success of 52 where he finally got some recognition and it´s about time he got the spotlight in his own series.

The covers by Doug Mahnke look really powerful ( altough I think the art inside is done by someone else ) but right now I have to reduce my pull list not add to it.

Just an interesting cover. My brother bought the first issues of HEROES FOR HIRE because of the CIVIL WAR tie - in but it seems he has lost interest and has no plans to follow the series after that. I have no idea if the series is any good. One of the members is Shang - Chi who has been one of my favorite Marvel characters but the art I have seen so far has been rather unspectacular. Again I would have to see some issues at a con or at the store.

This is one trade I´m going to look for. I had HAWKMAN on my pull list put I canceled my subscriptio right before things got interested. So I had to get the RISE OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE story as a trade. Which by the way is one of THE best Hawkman stories ever written. And it should be a must - read for all comic writers how to use continuity.

Since then I have not read the title and from what I have read in an issue of DOLMEN about the Howard Chaykin run that might not have been such a bad thing. I still don´t know why Dc decided to let Howard Chaykin draw and Walter Simonson write since they could have sold ten times as many comics if it had been the other way around. From what I´ve read this was strictly the artists decision but I still have to wonder what could have been a good title. We´ll see who does what in this trade.

JSA is one of the best DC comics puts out and one of the comics that is actually on my pull list. Ever since the preview pics of this new incarnation I was anxious to find out how the Superman of KINGDOM COME would be involved in the new series. And after reading that the JSA´s craziest member made a little pit stop in the Kingdom Come reality I thought that was that but I never expected the Kingdom Come Superman to join the team. You just never know what´s going to happen on this book. And they have Power Girl on the team. Can´t get enough Power Girl.

Being on the subject of comics on my pull list I should really start reading THE MIGHTY AVENGERS. Right now I have the first three issues and I´m waiting for the fourth to start reading. But every new cover I see online just screams at me : Start reading bitch ! What are you waiting for ?

Issue four, brother. I swear I´ll start with issue four.

When I see this cover I have to say I really whish Tom Grummet would do the interior art also. What is he up to anyway now that he is not the regular artist of THUNDERBOLTS anymore and has finished the BARON ZEMO mini series ? I think he does one issue of mystic arcana but he deserves a regular title.

Just looking at the cover makes you wish he was doing some kind of Avengers book. I haven´t read any of the new Marvel Adventure books but I am looking for them on the next cons. Especially the one where all the Avengers get M.O.D.O.K.fied.

Another title that I would like on my pull list but which hasn´t made the cut due to monetary reasons. I got the first four issues rather cheap at Essen last year and I read the fifth one as a german translation. So far the story by Chris Claremont read like a rehash of old storylines and the art was rather mediocre. Nothing too thrilling and I ahd some trouble to distinguish certain characters. I mean before it´s mentioned in the book you don´t recognize the villain who is supposed to be an evil Professor X.

From what I have seen in the solicitations over the last year there is some art by Scott Eaton so atleast on that front the title improves a little. Maybe I will get lucky this year in Essen again.

Judging from the covers ROBIN is one of the better series of Dc. Every single cover makes me want to go and buy the book - even without word ballons. The only problem is that the art inside does not deliver what the cover promises. So for the moment it´s on my radar but not on my reading pile.

If you have read my post about She Hulk you know that this book is going down the toilet - at least artistic wise. Apparently the sales are still pretty good but the story and art is just terrible. I´m desperate. This series is on my brothers pull list but I´m still desperate. I´m so desperate that I´m hoping Peter David will save the title.

And that´s saying quite much if you know my relationship with Peter David. For me there is some great work by him but also some awful work depending how much of his ego he managed to get under control. Because I´m not mad at him because he´s a hack and he doesn´t know better. No. If he really tries and goes for it Mr. Peter David can deliver some instant comic classics like HULK : FUTURE IMPERFECT. The problem is when he´s not trying. Let´s hope he puts some effort into it and saves the title. I mean after the train wreck Dan Slott made I´m willing to give almost anyone a chance.

With this wonderful David Finch cover for Namor 5 I wrap up this post. My beer is empty and I have ten minutes till I have to change the cassette to tape THE UNIT. So that´s all for today.

My spanish vacation - Part 5

Once in a while the computergods seem to smile on you.

Today Firefox suddenly worked again and even shows the clips on my blog ( thank god I didn´t do any double posts in my last entry - what I found out today ). I just finished to rebuild my picture archive for the blog and even downloaded a pletora of new episodes of ComicGeekSpeak to listen to while writing. In fact I´m listening to the Book of the Month Club Episode 3 which is about THE WALKING DEAD.

In addition today is Monday which means that they air BLADE and two new episodes of ALIAS nonstop. So I just tape it with my VCR so when I watch it later I can skip all the commercials. And I save 45 minutes because of that too. The only other thing on tv today is Mike Hammer which I will tape on the other vcr. So no tv for today, everything´s locked and loaded and I even have access to all the you tube bookmarks I made last time.

So let´s get back to my first day at the comic convention in Barcelona. There are still a few fanzines I have to write about that I didn´t cover in the first four parts Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4

Whew ! Almost lost my whole post. Thankfully blogger now automatically saves your draft or I would be royally screwed now !

Anyway, the first one is SUPERHEROES AL DESNUDO ( superheroes in the nude ) from FLAsCinDER. Priced at 1,50 EUROS this 40 page, glossy paper manual for the superhero of today is a cool tongue - in - cheek how to guideline to become a superheroes. From how to acquire superpowers to how to get a superhero costume up to fighting etiquette this one has it all.

And while it makes fun of a lot of superhero cliches it´s all in good taste. You can tell that deep down the artists behind are superhero fans.

For every superhero fan this should be a must read. And there´s a villain´s manual to boot. Speak about working both side of the equation. Anyway, here´s the link to the FLAsCinDER blog

The next one is COMPLEJO DE CACATUA which also includes some superhero spoofs but a little more risky. Still funny but more like MAD magazine. As you can tell from the cover.

I wanted to list the link for www.radiofreakie.com but the website doesn´t seem to work anymore.

Now not only did I get the 52 magazine size COMPLEJO DE CACATUA for 2,50 EUROS but a goodybag with 3 other fanzines for free. ME PARTO......CON UN HACHA - especial olvidados- is like the name says a 20 page special with forgotten characters from radiofreakie. And if you read it you also know why these characters are forgotten. There are some nice ideas and solid art but you get the feeling that it doesn´t " click ". It´s interesting for fans of radiofreakie and comic historians. For all others.......

EL ESTORNINO 2 : FREDDY´S NIGHTMARE ( of which I didn´t find any picture ) is like a elseworlds spoof of THE CROW that includes the crow ( of course ), Freddy Krueger, Chucky, Dracula and Blade. And SUBZERO ! The art is rather simple but the story is interesting although it sometimes goes to much off topic and almost loses sight of the main story at times. Not the best parody I have read but also not the worst.

The third one is TIB 3 : Tubie in Black Investigators ( also no pic ) which I haven´t read yet because of the apalling artwork. The comic seems to be about a investigation team like MEN IN BLACK only with antropomorphic animal investigators.

So that wraps up my visit to the fanzine area on the first day. I also went to the area with the normal comic dealers were they had everything - and I mean everything.

There were many comics I have in my collection from the dark times. Which means the lost years between when Williams stopped publishing Marvel comics and Condor began. During that period most american comics I read were the spanish translations which often had some pages missing.

While searching for material for this post I found this website were you can find tons of cover scans and a huge database that details how the comics were published in Sapin and which pages are missing.

And since we´re talking about those old comics I thought it might be interesting for my readers to see which spanish comics ended up in my collection. Especially since they have different covers than the original comics.

This comic has another issue of the story of Cap trying to find out more about his past. I remember that it´s drawn by Sal Buscema and it was a continuation of the french issue I read. I´m not sure if this is really in my own collection, I think my brother bought it. But since we have been swapping and exchanging comics back and forth for years ( depending on who followed which series at that point ) I can´t really tell.

This cover is from a collection that includes five normal issues of MOON KNIGHT. Which for Spain means taking five normal comics, slapping a new cardboard cover on it and just gluing it all together. But they are all in consecutive order. This one had five issues of the fabulous run by Bill Scienkiewicz which to this day are the only ones I read. I still haven´t gotten the money for the ESSENTIAL MOON KNIGHT.

This is the only other one.

Now since you couldn´t get Marvel comics in Germany you couldn´t afford to be choosy. Hence the Defenders. This issue has the infamous story in which the Hulk goes shopping ( I don´t remember under which circumstances exactly ) and buys a whole shopping cart full of canned beans. And the Defenders are eating beans for the next weeks. For some people this may be the worst comic story ever but for me it is just pat of the special charm of this particular team. I mean the< were not the Avengers or the Fantastic Four. They were more like the working man´s super hero team. Like the Giffen - League but a few decades earlier.

Part two of the story. As you can see the Valkyrie is a part of the team. I always wondered how they could get away with her costume during the comics code. Especially the big metal thingies. I wonder if they were padded.....

Anyway, I always liked the concept of the Valkyrie though they changed some things like the original Valkyries rode on wolves not on winged horses. I think that was added to attrackt more female readers. And she was once married to Thor though both of them don´t remember anymore. Yeah, I bet Thor remembers some things....like the honeymoon. He just SAYS he forgot so he doesn´t have to pay alimony.....that pig !!!

Where were we ? Yesterday I didn´t get to finish my post so today I´m continuing although I´m having the flu and have to go to the bathroom every five minutes. But let´s go on with the spanish comics.

This were the first issues of DEMON IN THE BOTTLE I read. The art team of John Romita Jr. and Bob Layton is still one of my all - time favorite Iron Man art teams. I wonder what Bob Layton´s doing right now......Marvel could use a few good inkers right now. Like on Moon Knight.....

PEDAZOS DE ODIO ! Now doesn´t that sound better than any original title could ? Sometimes the spanish translations have a better ring to it than english. I mean Irom Man sounds cool but the spanish name " Hombre the Hierro " is just oozing with machismo. If I was a wrestler that would be the kind of name I would go for. Or even better " El mucho grande Hombre de Hierro ". Yeah, that´s perfect.

I don´t know if DEMON IN THE BOTTLE has been published in Germany. Which should not be too surprising since history shows us that not always the best stories get translated to german. Maybe one of the reasons why comics are not so popular in Germany is that we don´t always get the best. Most times quality is sacrificed for the hip, flashy and hot......that is not remembered after two months. That and the crappy translations.

Okay, what is it with Cap and Iron Man ? Speak about history repeating itself. They always seem to fight as if some guy at Marvel is always pitting them against each other.

Now, all kidding aside in this issue Iron Man get´s a lesson in self defense techniques from Cap while Tony totally blows his secret identity. Like anyone is going to believe that Tony´s in such a surprisingly good shape because he plays a lot of Tennis. And least of all Captain America.

This is the last issue from DEMON IN THE BOTTLE storyline that I could get in spanish which ends just before the big showdown between a pissed off Iron Man and dozens of Hammer´s hired super villains. Daaamn !!!! That really sucked. It took me many years to find out how the story ended.

Now that´s not the last issue of Iron Man I read. Judging from this comic Tony must have survived the battle somehow.

Another issue of John Romita Jr / Bob Layton goodness of Iron Man fighting some strong guy underwater.

I know, the cover is just painfull to look at. Don´t worry, the art inside is much better. But you see how desperate I was to get Marvel comics that not even this cover could scare me away. Any decent comic fan would never have opened this comic to check out the art inside - because that would mean having to touch the cover.

This is without doubt one of the gems of my comic collection. Altough many years old this collection of five issues of the magnificient THE DEADLY HANDS OF SHANG CHI MASTER OF KUNG FU ( called EDITION DEDICATED TO THE MARTIAL ARTS KUNG FU KARATE in spanish ) is really one of my prized posessions. And not only because of the wonderful art by Mike Zeck on the top of his career.

The comics in this collection are the final issues of Shang Chi´s fight to stop his father Fu Man Chu from taking over the world. The big showdown between Shang Chi and Fu Man Chu takes place in a freaking flying saucer. How cool is that ?

Another Shang Chi comic that includes the story VIENTOS DE MEDIANOCHE ( winds of midnight ) one of the best...if not THE best story of the whole series. I think this comic got me more interested in mangas than any manga I read becuase it introduced me to the asian way of thinking and their sense of poetry. And there´s a gorilla in it. I already said it but you can´t argue about the quality of a comic with a monkey on the cover.

I don´t know how many times I have bought this comic. In one of his columns at image Erik Larsen said how he always buy the same comics over and over again. Well, he´s not the only one. I have this comic in french. I also have this one which is the spanish version in color from BRUGUERA. Then I bought the black and white spanish version that was included in the latest BIBLIOTEKA MARVEL edition. And I bought the german version which I think was a back up story in Spider - Man when CONDOR began printing Spider - Man comics again. Maybe I also bought the german poket book version when CONDOR published their poket book line which in part was responsible for the crash of superhero comics before the resurrection by DINO.

The art team of Sal Buscema and Ernie Chan was just fabulous. One of the many reasons why I don´t think it´s always a good idea to let artists ink themselves. Not that Sal Buscema is not a great artist in his own right. But the inks of Ernie Chan brings it to a whole new level.

No idea what happens in this comic. I only remember the striking cover art with Ka - Zar baptising old green genes while Zabu tries to pick a fight with LA MASA.

Now like in many german comics there often were back up stories in spanish comics that not always had something to do with the first series. Since the Hulk was pretty popular because of the tv series they thought it was a good idea to publish the She - Hulk in the same magazine. And because there is no female form of " LA MASA " she was named HULKA.

More comic book gold from Marvel that was never published in german. Wonderful art by Michael Golden. This series appealed to my love of superhero comics and science fiction.

Another collection of five issues. The funny thing is that I perfectly remember this comic being in my collection. But when Psychoman turned up years later during John Byrne´s Fantastic Four run I totally forgot it. It was like I was seeing this villain for the first time.

Sweet Christmas ! Another highlight from my collection. I became a big Kerry Gamill fan from reading his issues of POWERMAN. Many years later I was delighted when he took over the art in SUPERMAN, contributing to such classic storylines like EXILE or SAGA OF THE RED KRYPTONITE.

One of my favorite comics featuring EL AGUILA which is half Zorro, half Swordsman. Supposed to be a latino character this was especially interesting to read. Being spanish myself it´s always entertaining to experience how other countries sees or portrays us. I wonder if there is a spanish version of Dave´s Longbox " The Pain " banner. Something like " Que Dolor ".

This comic was part of a package from e - bay that found it´s way to me - aside from being already in my collection. So I´m not the only one who had it. The art is not so good in this comic because they got the wrong inker.

Eventually I had to throw away all the comics from the package because the issues were just too shreddered and battered. And they were covered in some kind of dust that I reacted allergic to. But it was cool rereading all those old spanish comics of Iron Man and Spider - Man. There was also an issue were Superboy gets transformed into a fishman and an issue of Green Lantern from the time when nobody knew who the Guardians were. I wonder why they got rid of that. It added a " MISSION IMPOSSIBLE " element to the stories. " Green Lantern of Sector 929652. Your mission....if you choose to accept it...."

I think this is the first issue of the storyline in which Iron Fist and Powerman return to Kun Lun. And it has that freaky nunchaku three part thingie. Martial arts just offer the coolest weapons.

This is definitely a part of the Kun Lun storyline. I remember that it began with the theft of the amulets of the Sons of the Dragon that later turned out to be part of a magic Jade Tiger sculpture. I especially remember a page that was a full fight scene between Iron Fist and a ninja that detailed the fight in a dozen little vignettes. Superb storytelling.

And somehow they used that sculpture to get to Kun Lun. I never found out how the Sons of the Dragon got their amulets back. Or did they ? Anyway, in recent Daredevil issues the White Tiger was wearing this amulet again so they must have gotten them back somehow - or some kind of replacement.

Now that I think of it the White Tiger was always one of my favorite characters. Not that his costume was very elaborate - it´s just a white body with a mask - but it seems the perfect design appealed to me even then. Too bad they got rid of him.

The last part of the storyline. I think the best part of the story was Luke Cage´s reaction to Kun Lun and the whole eastern mindset. The whole concept of Luke Cage, Marvel´s " most street " guy colliding with Lei Kung the Thunderer was brilliant. And are they fighting big salad monsters on the cover ?

Powerman & Iron Fist vs. Dracula. Grito de muerte. Nuff said.

The last issue I have. Featuring once again EL AGUILA this time fighting on the same side as the heroes for hire. Do I have to say more ?

Yeah, baby, now we´re talking ! Rom Spaceknight......Number One ! One of my all - time favorite series. When I found american issues they were already into the 30 numbers. So of the first issues I read the spanish version. I´m not sure if I got number 1 and number 2 in spanish or only number 1.

For some this series may sound cheesy but you can´t find a bigger space opera or a soul more noble than Rom in the whole 616 universe of Marvel - aside from Silver Surfer. I don´t know if the whole concept of an alien coming to save us from an invasion was a product of 80s science fiction inspired by Alien. But the whole idea of hundreds of sleeper agents was relative new then. Which in turn made the whole Manhunter thing in DCs Millenium unoriginal in comparison later on.

Another collection of five issues. The cover is from a story about a human / dire wraith - hybrid. If you need any more proof that this is a 80s series the fact that the evil shapechanging aliens are called " dire wraiths " should be a dead giveaway.

Yeah, I know, it´s Dazzler. I admit it. I read Dazzler, too. What can I say ? It was the 80s. Disco was big in Germany. Dazzler was new. And she wore a glittering skin tight outfit. That´s my story and I will stick to it.

You see ? She even fought Doctor Doom. Now I guess that´s one fact that old Doomy likes to keep to himself. I can just picture Spider - Man taunting him : " Didn´t you fight Dazzler once ? " Some things you can never live down.

Well, that´s enough embarrassing stuff for today. In the next part we will get back to the Salon del Comic in Barcelona and what I did on the other three days. I promise.
