This post was supposed to go online as a STAR SPANGLED SUNDAY WITH SAL BUSCEMA Yesterday but for better or worse it has been delayed one full day. But even if my posts get delayed they will not be stopped so here we are starting off the week with a look back at Sal Buscema's run on the steadfast sentinel of liberty, Captain America a.k.a. Steve Rogers.
And yes, I know that the cover above was drawn by John Byrne and not by Sal Buscema but that is because while Sal Buscema did a lot of issues for CAPTAIN AMERICA he wasn't always the cover artist for those issues.
So my alternatives were to use a cover from a different issue that has nothing to do with the issues I am spotlighting in this post or use a cover from those issues which is done by another artist. And since there will be quite a number of posts about this run I opted for the latter. Also if you have to choose an artist to substitute for Sal Buscema John Byrne is not a bad choice since he has drawn everything within the Marvel universe - plus some from the DC universe and creator owned series - including a too short but memorable run on CAPTAIN AMERICA with Roger Stern.
Now when I say that the post has been delayed for better or worse that is because Yesterday - just as I was trying to finish up on preparing the material for this post - I suddenly couldn't access the main website that provides the coloured pages for my popular Black And White posts. At least I hope that they are popular. Anyway, it was just before midday and there were a few more issues to go but I thought I could finish it after eating. And I didn't want my pizza to get cold. After being forced to go to Spain I had to say goodbye to a lot of things I had gotten used to back in Germany ( like hot water, functioning toilets, normal heating, clean rooms and that kind of things ) so I am trying to hold onto the few joys that still make life worth living and pizza is one of them. So after eating my pizza I wanted to continue but no matter what I tried the website was blocked and I also could not find this material on any other website.
If it hadn't been for Tom Brevoort's blog THE TOM BREVOORT EXPERIENCE where he writes about a lot of issues of CAPTAIN AMERICA illustrated by Sal Buscema I could not do this post. And here is where the for better part comes in because he has scans from the actual comicbooks on the blog and as longtime followers of TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN already know I always prefer to post pages in the original colouring because for my money the new colouring on comics can be too grell and too shiny.
So what is in this post ? With so many issues to choose from how could I bring it down to a manageable 23 pages ? One possibility is concentrate on iconic issues with a lasting impact on Captain America or the Marvel universe in general. And there have been plenty of those amongst Sal Buscema's tenure on the book, from the return of the Captain America from the 1950s to the uncanny X - Men guest - starring in the book while their series was on hiatus which led to the SECRET EMPIRE story that ended with Steve Rogers quitting being Captain America and adopting the new crime fighting identity of Nomad to Captain America going in search of his real past as Steve Rogers and trying to figure out which of his memories were real and which ones were implanted to prevent the enemy to get vital information about his life - if he ever gets captured.
Or I could go with some issues that I have actually read and which have importance to me on a personal level. As frequent blog readers already might have guessed I chose option c which is to do both. So the issues in this post are from the time when Captain America was researching his past and I didn't read the original US version nor the translated versions in german or spanish but in a french comicbook of all things. Now I have written about the french comicbooks I got during a student exchange with France before - in fact I did a whole post on the HULK issues I got there and which pages from the original comic were omitted or cut way back in 2016 - and all the issues in this post were included in the Captain America comic Qui Est Steve Rogers ? from the publisher Aredit Artima.
Where we have Captain America going up against the evil machinations of the Corporation, a criminal organisation that was introduced by Jack Kirby during his second run on CAPTAIN AMERICA and which was active in issues with Captain America and Hulk ( conveniently both drawn by Sal Buscema at that time so when they did a crossover they reused entire pages ), Machine Man for a time and also clashed with Jack Of Hearts.
Speaking about the Corporation, one of the reasons why these issues are so memorable to me ( even tough I first read them in french ) is the Corporation's monster Animus which makes its first appearance in issue 223 and is a super evolved human being that combines mental powers that scientists predict men may develop in the future with the brute strength and aggressiveness of a caveman and is just a very cool design.
