It's a Thursday throwdown with Jim Aparo !

With all the stuff I have to fix with the old posts and all of the material I still have to add to the new posts one might think I would have my hands full but I am as surprised as you to be writing yet another spotlight that includes the complete original art for an issue of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, and in this case it's issue 141 in which Batman teams up with Black Canary - and Alfred Pennyworth ... kind of - to go up against the Joker.

Now I don't know if this still qualifies for JUSTICE LEAGUE MONTH but it is a DC Comic and it does feature two members of the Justice League of America : Batman and Black Canary. At this point my regular blog visitors are probably tired of reading this but this is not the post I intended to write. It was still going to be a Jim Aparo post but a very different one.

You see, various news outlets have finally dropped the actual contents of the upcoming JIM APARO'S DC CLASSICS Artist's Edition which is going to hit book stores on the 30th of September 2025. Now everybody who has visited this blog over a longer period of time knows what a big fan I am of his work. And also that I am not allowed to get a lot of comics since I came to Spain. The only time when I choose to completely ignore this rule is on my birthday or for Christmas where I always try to get a new Artist's Edition. I have already managed to get quite a few ( I brought two with me from Germany, JOHN BYRNE'S MARVEL CLASSICS ARTIFACT EDITION - about which I wrote in this post - and MIKE ZECK'S CLASSIC MARVEL STORIES ARTIST'S EDITION - about which I did likewise here ) and some of them even with a decent discount but I am trying not to let things get out of hand. Because on one side prices for these books have become ridiculously high in the last years - and I have already written about that - and I have the feeling that getting too many of these books diminishes their value and uniqueness. Maybe it is just me but I want these books to be something special and it kind of looses its charm if you have a few dozen of them. So I am trying to pick and choose my battles here - especially keeping in mind that the prices for these books can go up to 250 bucks or more - and decide which books I can do without. I mean, Michael Golden, Dave Cockrum or Paul Smith are all great artist but I think I can pass on an artbook by them which costs an arm or a leg.

The same goes for Jim Lee or Neal Adams although in those cases it was more like I was interested to get it but it just didn't appear in the right timeframe for a price I could afford. On the other hand there are other artists like Jim Aparo, George Perez, Carlos Pacheco, Arthur Adams, John Romita Jr, Marc Silvestri or Adam Hughes where I don't understand why it takes so long to do an Artist's Edition. That's practically like a license to print money. Anyway, the Jim Aparo Artist's Edition has been on my wish list since the news dropped that they were finally going to make it and for my money September can't be here fast enough. Especially with all the catastrophes in the real world I need something to look forward to.

Granted, I am probably not going to be able to buy it as soon as it comes out and have to wait until it comes into a reasonable price range but as long as I can get it in time for Christmas - or the Day Of The Three Magic Kings which is a bigger holiday down here in Spain - I'm a happy camper.

So I wanted to get people more hyped for this Artist Edition by sharing what will be in it and did what I always do in such cases : go through my picture archive and see if I have any material for this post. Which now that I got my entire archive deleted - twice - is not always a given but lo and behold not only did I have something that lines up with the content of the book but it was almost the complete 23 pictures required all ready and prepared for posting. Now as my longtime followers know I never start any post without doing the proper research so while looking for more material included in the book I came across the full original art for issue 141 of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and decided that posting this would take precedent over the post I originally intended to post since it includes pages from various series Jim Aparo worked on and requires more time to prepare. So please, for Today enjoy issue 141 called Pay Or Die ! written by Bob Haney and illustrated by Jim Aparo and we will get to the JIM APARO DC CLASSICS ARTIST'S EDITION soon. I promise we will.
