TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN: No ! It's a tearful Tuesday with Peter David !

This is the kind of post I don't like to make but being realistic most comic book writers and artists I follow have become a bit long in the tooth plus with the age I have it is only a matter of time that they go to the great beyond in comicbook heaven. Which doesn't mean that I have to like it but you think you are prepared. But I was not prepared for Peter David leaving his mortal coil for a better world this soon. 68 years is a number I still have to achieve but I hope that's not the finish line for me. Now longtime followers of the blog know that I surely had my issues with Peter David since I didn't like everything he wrote and also haven't read everything he wrote. But I always tried to be civil and criticize the work and not the man. And I also had no problem giving props when they were deserved. Because at the end of the day there was a huge part of Peter's catalogue I enjoyed and still enjoy. Now with all of the different series that he has written over the decades I have thought about what kind of tribute post I should do and since I really don't have a lot of material about SPIDER - MAN 2099 I am going with another INCREDIBLE HULK post.

Especially his tenure on the title with Dale Keown which for me is one of the undisputed highlights of the entire series. Both creators were at their peak and of all the INCREDIBLE HULK issues I had in single issue, pocket book, trade paperback or hardcover this part is one of the only two which I rebought albeit in the omnibus format. The other one is the following omnibus because of the Cam Smith art but mainly for Peter's iconic Future Imperfect two - parter with the great, late George Perez .

Like his books YOUNG JUSTICE, SUPERGIRL , CAPTAIN MARVEL, AQUAMAN and others that I have written about on the blog somewhere I also made a few posts about his run on INCREDIBLE HULK - two on his collaboration with Todd McFarlane and three about his issues with Dale Keown - so you are probably asking yourself if I really need to make another Peter David and Dale Keown Hulk post and the answer is a wholehearted heck, yes !

This post is my tribute to one of the greatest writers in comic history who gave us such great characters like Spider - Man 2099 and defined the Hulk for all future generations during his unprecedented twelve year run on the book. And it was not only that he wrote the title for twelve years but he crushed it. Granted, there were some parts I liked more than others - as is the case with most runs - but for the most part it was consistently good. I still remember the first INCREDIBLE HULK issue by Peter David that I read ( which was THE INCREDIBLE HULK 328 that was a fill - in issue before he started his run with issue 331 ) - the artist on that issue was Dwayne Turner and the inker Tony Dezuniga as he would only be paired with Todd McFarlane later - which featured a forgettable villain ( I'm not sure if he ever appeared in another comic ) and a lot more panels and word balloons than your average comic. It was like Peter tried to cram a 48 page story into a 22 page issue. I distinctively remember that when I read the issue it was almost like a woke from a very lucid fever dream and I knew that this was something different.

Anyway, as always these posts are all about the art and I hope I have managed to pick some of the highlights from this run even if I have posted some of the pages before - although in much lower quality than here. But I hope since this is a special occassion my readers will give me some leeway here and now let's raise our glasses to one of the greats.
