As I said in a previous post I wasn't sure if I could do a special post for Christmas but in fact I have been working on this post for the last three days which started out as a SUPERMAN post, then turned into a triangle era SUPERMAN post, a DEATH OF SUPERMAN / REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN post to a Tom Grummett on the Superman books spotlight post to a Tom Grummett SUPERBOY post only to end up as a Tom Grummett SUPERBOY post spotlighting Knockout. But that's how things go down around here.
As longtime followers of the blog know I like to alternate between a DC Comic post, a Marvel Comic post and a post about an independent comic company ( if possible ) so since our last post was about Marvel Comics THUNDERBOLTS it was time for another DC Comics post. But since we are close to Christmas I wanted to do something special so I went over my post list and it has been 19 months since my last SUPERMAN post which is way too long especially for a blog called TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN.
So I went to my Superman folder to look if I have enough material for a post since I had to re - start my picture archive from scratch for various reasons which I don't want to go into right now. Regular readers already know what happened and for the others it is not important for this post.
Anyway, as I mentioned at the beginning most of the original art I had was from the so - called triangle era of the publishing history of the SUPERMAN titles. Now a lot of my readers are probably wondering what the fragg the " triangle era " is and usually I may be tempted to leave this question unanswered but as I learned in recent months my memory is not as reliable as it used to be so for the sake of the possibility that I have not explained it in a previous post - even though I am pretty sure I did but I also was sure that I already did a Tom Grummett spotlight post which I did not do - I will try to summarize it as comprehensive as I can.
For that we have to go back to DC Comics first companywide crossover CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS or better the time directly afterwards. After DC Comics had done away with their old continuity the general idea was to start all series from a blank state although not all books followed that order. In the case of the SUPERMAN books star writer and author John Byrne was brought in to revamp the Superman universe and he started writing and drawing two monthly books, SUPERMAN and ACTION COMICS ( of which the latter one was a team - up book with Superman and other DC Comics character ) after laying the foundation in the MAN OF STEEL.
A third book ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN was illustrated by Jerry Ordway so they had three monthly Superman books. Over time the Superman books got more readers but there were only three weeks in any given month that a new Superman title came out so the Superman fans didn't go to the comicbook store on the fourth week. To change that DC Comics created another monthly title called MAN OF STEEL by Jon Bogdanove and finally for the weeks where none of the four titles were published MAN OF TOMORROW to make sure they had 52 Superman issues a year.
Now while the editorial oversight and cooperation at that time was at an all time high it could be difficult for new readers to know in which order to read the books. Because another great thing they did back then was that even if a story ran through all four titles every issue could be read separately and would give the reader a full story. True, the story would sometimes be continued in the next issue or another Superman title but that particular story had its resolution. You could only read SUPERMAN and ACTION COMICS and there was no need to read the other Superman titles - unless you wanted the full story. And at first I only read those two books because I just wanted to read the John Byrne Superman series.
Yep, I was a bit of a comicbook snob back then but it was also healthy for my purse. Call me old fashioned but I sometimes think that if Today's readers would be more selective in spending the hard earned comicbook money the industry wouldn't be in the sorry state that it is in right now.
Anyway, with three than four and lastly five Superman titles it could be intimidating for new readers and so DC Comics included a little triangle on the cover of each Superman comic with the year and the number of the week. That way you had the reading order without the need of those pesky reading lists and that is what people refer to as the triangle era.
Now the most famous story of that era is the DEATH OF SUPERMAN story and compiling the material for this post was especially bittersweet since I had to sell my THE DEATH AND RETURN OF SUPERMAN omnibus before coming to Spain. I would have liked to read it again since I could not really appreciate it the first time I read it because it was only a week or so after my brother had passed away. I mean it is a really great story but not really the right reading material right after the loss of a loved one.
Anyway, I started to have a good amount of material for the post when I naturally came across issue 500 of ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN which introduced the four new Supermen including the new Superboy by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett. Man, I miss those days when comicbook series went on for 200, 300, 400 or 500 issues. I know Today everybody is after the number 1 and people want to get into a series at the ground floor and if it's already at number 3 they don't even bother. But back then when you were looking for a series to read you wanted one that was already running for a long time because then the chances were higher that it would continue to run for a long time. And instead of the number 1 we were looking for the celebratory numbers like 50, 100, 150 or 200.
But again I am starting to go on a tangent. As blog readers of the first hour are aware of Tom Grummett is one of my favourite artists ( and if you are asking yourself how many favourite artist this bloody Subzero guy has you ought to check out my post about 100 thing that I like about comics ) and I have mentioned some of the many books Tom Grummett worked on like AVENGERS ACADEMY, THUNDERBOLTS, X - MEN FOREVER or SECTION ZERO ( to name just a few ) on the blog. So while I found a few more original artwork by Tom the idea to make a post about SUPERBOY became more and more interesting. Of course things went completely off the rails once I started finding more Superboy material and the one character who quickly became more prominent was buxom Knockout.
Who not only was named Knockout but also was a total knockout with the ultimate pornstar body. Plus she was super strong on a level with Wonder Woman or Big Barda ( which was not the only thing she had in common with the big breasted former leader of the Female Furies but we would only learn that at a later time ) and liked to tussle so she also finished her opponents off by knockout. But above all she liked to tussle - no matter if it's in a fight or in the bedroom - especially with Superboy.
Introducing a new female character on the same power level as Wonder Woman and Big Barda also allowed them to go into territory they could not with the original characters especially since Knockout was a bad girl so it would not be out of character if she used a prepubescent teen with super powers as her breeding stallion, riding his dick long and hard for days with little or no breaks in - between. Also this way they could make all those Superboy / Wonder Woman / Big Barda fan fiction stories cum true in the comicbooks without making big waves. A very smart move.
I'm not kidding, Knockout had the hots for Superboy and when she was not busy getting all worked up by beating the crap out of him she was trying to dicktame him in the worst way to turn him into her boy toy.
Of course you could only show the normal fights within the pages of the SUPERBOY comicbook but you knew that Knockout was submitting him to weekend long penetration sensation marathon fuck sessions where she used her bigger height, extreme endurance and ferocious sex drive to milk his horsecock dry making him squirt huge loads until the last drop.
She knew that he was sexually fixated on big breasts and since she has an extremely overdeveloped pair of oppai she made sure to motorboat him for a few hours until she had worn down his resistance at which point she used her superior blowjob skills to deepthroat his dick until he had grown to three sizes his normal size and harder than Supermanium.
But it was not enough that he craved sex with her, she wanted to drive him mad with desire so she spent hours massaging his throbbing schlong with her giant - sized boobs until he was howling like a crazy werewolf.
Well, I'm not sure but my theory is that they wanted to use a character that was a mix between Big Barda and Maxima so a cross between the ultimate warrior woman who was destined to become a breed mare for the best warriors on Apokolips and the ruler of an alien civilization who wanted to save her race from extinction by procreating with Superman after his defeat of Mongul during his stint as a gladiator on Warworld.
And to make things even better they not only gave Knockout a stunning physique that could have multiplied the sales numbers of any adult magazine without trying hard, less scruples than a DC Comics editor, a thirst for battle rivalling a warrior princess, an even greater thirst to tame super strong adolescent boys - or in this case clones - with huge cocks and gave her a stripper name, they also made her a stripper.
That's right, when Knockout makes her first appearance ( which happens in the second issue of SUPERBOY so you know she will be important ) she works as a stripper and when she is not busy fighting with - or against - Superboy or slam - banging his brains out like there is no Tomorrow she is taking off her clothes in front of dozens of ecstatic drunk truck drivers.
Man, they don't make comicbooks like this anymore where women are complex characters that are still emancipated enough to enjoy sex or taking off their clothes as a way to express their freedom and sexuality.
But I see that we are almost at the regular " 23 pictures per post " limit so I will add a few more pages with Knockout before wrapping things up for Today since Tomorrow is Christmas. In any case our next part will be the continuation of this topic and I hope that this time we will come to more about Tom Grummett's run on SUPERBOY - which may or may not include more pages with the ravishing redhead Knockout. Who knows ?

Speaking of introducing new characters into the Superman universe, our good pal Brian Cronin lists Five Times DC Comics Used Superman On The First Cover Of A Series To Introduce It in his newest instalment of his series Drawing Crazy Patterns over at COMIC BOOK RESOURCES where he also takes a look at the historical impact of Archie's Christmas Stockings.

ordway talks also about his Captain Marvel series The Power Of Shazam ! ( from which you can find more art in this post ) which could not have the name of the main hero oh the cover. That was of course due to the fact that Marvel Comics has the copyright to Captain Marvel and it is funny or ironic that DC Comics has problems with Captain Marvel over the copyright because back in the day when Captain Marvel outsold Superman comicbooks they filed a lawsuit - which they ultimately won - that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman. By the time the lawsuit was over however Fawcett Comics was going to stop publishing comicbooks and DC Comics bought Captain Marvel from them who has been part of the DC Comics universe ever since. When you look at the timeline it really took DC Comics a long time to go after Captain Marvel while they shut down a Superwoman newspaper strip after just one day . And that even though they themselves never published a Superwoman comicbook - either back then or now.

One of the best things - if not THE best thing - in the first two Gremlin movies is without a doubt cult siren Phoebe Cates who was the IT girl and the number 1 wet dream for all males growing up in the 80s and no other female celebrity embodied the spirit of that decade like Phoebe.
If you haven´t seen Paradise you MUST check it out ! Phoebe Cates nude scenes alone are worth the price of admission as it is the only film where she did full on nudity apart from her famous scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High where she comes out of a pool and takes her top off.
