Well, Matt Baker also wasn't on my bingo card as I thought I would close out the year with another traditional Black And White post that collects the original artwork that I found while doing the research on my posts which I haven't been able to post but which is just too good to languish in a folder when it could be enjoyed by my faithful followers instead.
Since coming to Spain I have had to slowly but surely let go of a lot of the traditions I have upheld for over 50 years - internationals, nationals as well as personals - so I am trying to hold onto the few I still have left.
And one of these traditions has been to go through ye olde Black And White Artwork folder and put the best ones - as well as the ones that don't fit any other category and unpublished artwork - in one final post.
And that was what I was going to do this year but call it luck, call it the whims of fate or just predictability as I always do I went to the internet one final time to prepare the original art pieces for the post. And during that last hurrah I found a plethora of original artwork from Matt Baker, in fact I found so much it will take several posts to put them on the blog.
Now if you don't know who Matt Baker is don't worry, I didn't know either.
But I am sure you have seen his most well known piece of art, the cover to issue 17 of Phantom Lady which has gotten a lot of notoriety because Dr. Frederick Wertham used it as an example how comicbooks are the sole root of juvenile delinquency in his book Seduction Of The Innocent.
Matt Baker - who is often referred to as the first black comicbook artist - did quite a few covers and stories for Phantom Lady but he also worked on titles as Atomic Comics, Classics Illustrated, Crown Comics, Famous Features, Fight Comics, Ghost Comics, Journey Into Fear, Seven Seas, Ranger Comics, Sheena or Teenage Romances to name just a few books.
