a bit of news and a lot of Richard Corben

I don´t know but lately my blog has become more of a news blog with more announcements and news and less talk about comics per se. On the other hand I have always considered this blog a work in progress.

Talking about a work in progress : a few days ago I was proof reading some of the posts I linked to in the " top ten posts " that I put up at the end of every post for the new readers. And because I use it as a kind of introduction I thought that the least I could do was to make sure there are no syntax or spelling errors.

Well, while I was working on one of the posts there was suddenly a problem with the HTML and I had to improvise a bit. I had suddenly lost a picture then I had to find it again and to find a way to restore the page as it was. All in all one hour of work just to change two or three words. And so I have decided to leave the old posts as they are. I don´t want to risk loosing a post ( I already had this happen a few times ) just for pure cosmetic reasons. And there´s something to be said for keeping it real.

What I am thinking about is the return of the Civil War banners. It looked kind of weird when you have all the different posts lined up but not so much now that I have limited the number of posts on the first page to four. And if you have only one post it looks kind of naked without it if you get my drift. So I´m going to add some banners when I have the time.

The other thing I have to add are the funny or clever or just plain weird quotes I like to add at the end. In the last few posts I have been lacking in that departement but I haven´t come around good quotes that still sound cool when taken out of context.

Another administrative thing I have to do is welcome another new blog to the blog roll. Today I received an e - mail from one of the blogs I had contacted for the link exchange. Since I found no e - mail on the blog I left a comment but I forgot to include my e - mail address. I thought that you could contact me through the blog but I forgot to activate the e - mail in my personal profile. I have corrected that now so sorry to all persons out there who tried to contact me but couldn´t because I was too stupid to activate the e - mail. Sorry.

The name of the new blog ( well, it´s not per se new but you know what I mean ) is THE COMICS WAITING ROOM NEWSWIRE and like the name implies it´s all about comic news. It´s a bit different from NEWSARAMA or COMICBOOK RESOURCES since it doesn´t have pictures - just facts. Nevertheless you should check it out because not only do they provide the latest news they also give you background info about the companies or persons that are mentioned. Kind of like the " Flash facts " which is really helpful if like me you don´t know everything. Anyway, thanks again for including me in the blog links - especially as " Germany´s finest Comic Blog ! " with exclamation mark and everything. I´ll try to live up to it.

Which was the plan anyway ( well, initially to be half as funny and witty as DAVE´S LONGBOX ) but now I have another reason for it. I always thought that you should strive to become as good as possible in everything you do so when I set out to do a comics blog the goal always was to make Germany´s best comic blog - ever. Of course that means becoming what I consider to be the definition of the best blog. So back to the comics.

I´m still re - reading the JOHN BYRNE´S NEXT MEN issues and it really is one of the best series I read. What´s really interesting is reading the letters pages. You know, that thing the big publishers deem obsolete right now. And that may be. If you read the comics now. But if you read them five or ten years down the road that´s a whole different ballgame. Because let´s be real who goes to the internet when he reads a comic that´s five or ten years old just to search for hours to find old posts on the message boards about it ? So it´s nice to get the feedback of the time the comic came out. Especially when you can read it with the hindsight or perspective of a few years.

It´s really interesting because some of the topics haven´t changed while others have changed very much. Gimmick covers, the big crossovers or the hot artists of the month are things that are still being discussed. What has changed is the focussing on the art that was the norm of the day and which has now shifted to taking the story much more important. What hasn´t changed is the fact that it´s always one or the other. The idea that you have to put a big emphasis on both aspects of comics is somthing that doesn´t come up very often in comics history.

Speaking about comics history one of the intruiging aspects of the letters page is that John Byrne is one of the artists that had a big impact on the history of comics being at one time the hottest artist in comics. There´s no denying it. When I started collecting comics any comic that was drawn by John Byrne was a bestseller. Since then a lot of time has passed and I think JOHN BYRNE´S NEXT MEN was the book where he made the transition......or better where fandom made it for him......from top dog to slowly becoming one of the less popular artists. I don´t think it really had something to do with the fact that JOHN BYRNE´S NEXT MEN treated topics like racism, bigottery, adultery or superheroes in a real world setting.

Who knows what causes an artist to fall from grace ? So when he writes about the happenings in the comic industry he speaks from the perspective of somebody who was at the top and is slowly going down in the readers favor. Anyway, if you haven´t read NEXT MEN you should definitely check it out. But that´s not what I really wanted to write about.

I think I mentioned in my last post that I had ordered some comics through amazon which included some volumes of CASE CLOSED and the trade of HAUNT OF HORROR - or so I thought. When I ordered it I thought that for the price of 13.60 EUROS and free of shipping it had to be the trade. So picture my surprise when I found the premiere hardcover that is usually priced at 19.99. My brother thinks it has something to do with the current crisis that the dollar has become weaker but as far as I could find out through research concerning other hardcovers it´s the only one.

I have no idea if it´s a special price, a snafu or what. What I DO know is that you can still order it and there are currently only five copies left. Of course this is something for my german readers because it is on amazon.de not amazon.com and the shipping is free. One of the reasosn why I was surprised that the package arrived today is that usually american trades take up to two weeks for delivery. Now I don´t know if that has changed since I don´t order that often from amazon but in this case shipping takes no more than three days. So if like me you missed the mini here´s your chance to get it in hardcover for a bargain price.

Now there may be readers out there who want to know what´s it all about. I can´t expect all my readers to know about every comic book released out there so here is some info :

In the last few years fantasy comic pioneer and master craftsman Richard Corben has dome more comic work for the likes of Dark Horse, DC or Marvel. At Dark Horse he did some covers and a two part HELLBOY book and is currently doing some interior pages for a CONAN title.

For DC he did a HELLBLAZER storyarc written by none other than Brian Azzarello of 100 BULLETS as well as a SOLO issue that is like a deluxe edition of HORRORSCHOCKER while his working relationship with Marvel lasted a bit longer. He did the mini series BANNER and CAGE, did some covers and issues for GHOST RIDER and a three issue mini series called HAUNT OF FEAR : EDGAR ALLEN POE.

If there ever was a combination of cult writer with cult artist that was destiny it´s this one. In each issue three stories from horror story pioneer Edgar Allen Poe was reimagined and transported to the comic page by Richard Corben. Being a comic fan as well as a horror fan putting this series on my pull list was a no - brainer but it seems there were a lot of others who liked the comic. Otherwise there wouldn´t have been the sequel.

After doing Edgar Allen Poe the next logical step was a volume about Howard Phillip Lovecraft master of the mindscape where nightmares of other dimensions and unspeakable horrors dwell. While Edgar Allen Poe always delved more into the abyss that lies in the psyche of man and it´s depravations H.P. Lovecraft was always more interested in things like the elder gods and monsters just too big for the human kind to comprehend. He inspired whole generations of creative people and without him there may have been no Hellboy.

I´m not entirely sure if he invented the Necronomicon but it is a big part of a lot of his stories. Anyway, again Richard Corben excells at re - imagening this classic stories for a new audience. Was he already the perfect choice for the first part here ha can really show his muscles by depicting the impossible spacegod monsters which Lovecraft does best ( well, he invented them ). Do I really have to say more about his art ?

Another thing I just have to mention is that series editor Daniel Ketchum could have been the inspiration for the 90s GHOST RIDER´s secret identity Daniel Ketch.

  • Something I haven´t done in a long time is speaking about the quality of the product because mostly there is not much to say but it´s something I did in my first reviews. Since then I have gone away from writing about specific trades or hardcovers but now that the occassion presents itself why not do it ? I really liked the way that COLLECTED EDITION presents the trades so let´s see if I can take a page from their book. I don´t know how the other MARVEL PREMIERE EDITIONS are because of the tight budget I have but the copy I received looks really nice. It has a paper slieve with the cover to issue one over the black hardcover that has the title " HAUNT OF HORROR " embedded with blue metallic letters.

It´s printed on nice glossy paper ( 90 Gramms ? ) and you can open it without fear of breaking it like the JLA / JSA : VIRTUE AND VICE hardcover from DC. Also there are no printing errors like in the AVENGERS FOREVER trades by Marvel. It´s almost completely in black and white ( except the original covers that are included ) which evokes the athmosphere of old horror movies with Boris Karloff or Vincent Price and after each comic story the original story by H.P. Lovecraft is included. Now there is one warning I have to add : being a Marvel MAX title it has some explicit content but that´s to expect with this subject.

I don´t recommend a lot of comics - well, I do mention what I think are good books and what people should read - but when I think that a comic is just so good that it would be a shame if people would not read it I make an exception. So my recommendation : check out H. P. LOVECRAFT´S HAUNT OF HORROR.

If you are a fan of Richard Corben or H. P. Lovecraft you owe it to yourself and if you aren´t familiar with one of the guys work you should definitely do it. Especailly if you live in Germany and can get it for 13,60 including shipping.

Now I have written that much and nothing about CASE CLOSED. Which is just as well since I haven´t read any of the volumes so far. I have just started with HAUNT OF HORROR and I´m still got a few issues of JOHN BYRNE´S NEXT MEN ahead of me. I haven´t started on the issues of ECHO and USAGI YOJIMBO I got the last time I was at the comic shop because I wanted to write a post about TEEN TITANS before I started on that. Which more and more seems unlikely. Additionally my brothers monthly care package from the comic shop arrived today so there is still more stuff to read. He hasn´t unpacked them yet but I think if HULK 10 is out it´s time again for me to go to the comic shop myself.

So I think I have covered everything important and hopefully there will be more comic stuff in my next post.

    vulcan booty and comic goodies

Before I start with my post for today I wanted to mention that the comics I ordered have finally arrived on Saturday.

I ordered them from a new online dealer, namely Andi´s Comicexpress and you can take the word express literally. Not only did all the comics I had ordered arrive in pristine condition and in nice comic bags but they arrived really fast. When I´m ordering comics online I already expect to have to wait two weeks if there are any trades in the order. But not this time. Wow. My Thunderbolts collection is complete again. And I got a nice CIVIL WAR postcard and a info booklet for Erlangen. I just love it when you order comics and you get some goodies. Here is the link if you want to check them out, they have american comics and german comics :

  • Andi´s Comicexpress

  • It´s Sunday afternoon and I finally have some time to write. After watching the episode of Enterprise ( the first with the mirror universe crew. Wow, does T Pol look hot or does she look hot ? ) and some ice cream I´m " chilling ", listening to the new jazztracks I downloaded ( just go to the RedJazzRadio link on this blog ) because there has been no new show and thinking about the last comics I read.

But then I made the mistake to google for some pictures of T Pol for my blog...thank god I didn´t google Jolene Blalock...now that would have taken forever. Now at least I have some decent pics to post. I even found some animated avatars from the next episode which apparently will have a fight between mirror T Pol and mirror Hoshi ( which is german slang for guy ). Catfight ! ROWWR ! I think there is a rule that women in the mirror universe have to be ten times sexier than their normal counterparts. Which i thought was impossible in t Pol´s case but a low cut uniform that accentuates her ripped midsection goes a long way. So who´s complaining ? I really like the new uniforms.

Anyway, back to the important stuff. It´s been now two months since I started this little blog and so far I have 30 posts, two readers, one link on another site to my blog and zero comments. So my mission in Erlangen ( apart from getting tons of sketches and drawings from artists like Humberto Ramos ) has to be to pimp my blog like there is no tomorrow. Maybe that will get more traffic on my blog. And if everything else fails I have to devote one post to Power Girl.

Now what comics did I read ? The first was Moon Knight 2 which was really excellent but a little graphic. I was quite surprised to find such heavy imagery in the comic. On on hand I thought : Yes, that´s how comics have to be done. On the other hand I thought : Now, this is nothing I would give my kids to read. I mean, having read comics in Spain and Germany I am used to pretty heavy stuff ( on the spanish end ) but also to some heavy censoring ( on the german end ). So while I applaud it I´m also wondering how much will survive if there is ever a german version.

But let´s talk a little about the original issue. In issue 2 we learn a little more about how Marc Spector came to the low point we found him im at the end of last issue. Like I said pretty gruesome and gory stuff but it perfectly shows the ugly side of the superhero business. It´s not all about saving cats from trees and almost naked hot chicks from drowning. Some times it´s deadly, crazy arch enemies and bloodied body parts and mutilated girlfriends stuffed into refrigerators. Great storytelling and great art. This one has it all. If you have not picked it up already you should definitely check it out.

Here are preview pages from issue 2

Now the new Blue Beetle series gets more frustrating for me the longer I read it. Now maybe it´s just me but in Blue Beetle 3 I realized for the first time that the story is told in two different time zones. The first is before the events of One Year Later and the other...well, after. I don´t know if that is due to bad memory on my part or if it´s because of bad storytelling. But it was a really confusing read. There was a guest artist in this issue but he was not that different from Cully Hamner, the series regular artist, to distract too much from reading.

Action Comics 838 - I almost had finished to read the issue when I realized why Superman was not using his superpowers : he didn´t have them yet. This issue takes place before the one I read last week. Okay, now it all makes sense. The art was also not that exciting so I guess I won´t be putting any Superman comics on my pull list before Carlos Pacheco starts his run.

Fantastic Four - A death in the family was a good read with solid art by Lee Weeks who really should be doing more comics. His fill in issues of the Hulk on the Bruce Jones run were really tight and he finally deserves some regular gig. The story was not the big earth shattering epic but a nice character study about what makes Marvel´s first family so special putting the spotlight on Johnny Storm. He´s always playing the part of hot headed team member and all around goofball that people forget how intense he can be. The one thing that always has priority is the family. Just ask Don Corleone. I also liked the John Byrne Fantastic Four story that was included.

    Some preview pages

100 Bullets 72 Is there really somebody out there who is not reading 100 Bullets ? Or hasn´t heard about it ? At the moment it is the only Vertigo book on my pull list due to the fact that it not only has great writing by Brian Azzarello but top notch art from Eduardo Risso. Now the stories are sometimes confusing for me because there is so much going on on so many fronts. But after a few issues it all falls into place and makes sense. So although I don´t know what the two brothers have to do with the big picture I´m sure it is something important.

    100 Bullets 72

That´s all for today and I hope to get one more post done before the start of Erlangen. Because the only way for me to post some things during the time would be if somebody in Erlangen could let me use his computer. Which I very much doubt. But I will be taking my notebook ( the regular kind not the electronic version ) so that I will be able to give you my impressions and my latest misadventures when I have returned.

    I pulled Dan Slott´s THING !!!

Friday was a very busy day which began with my contact person at the job agency calling me on the phone and throwing me out of bed at high noon. Now I know what you are thinking : Oh, that´s so typical all this unemployed slackers stay in bed the whole day. Which in my case is the result of a ton of difficulties I had with the job agency because they didn´t want to pay me and they were always basical-ly treatening me like some kind of criminal.

Now if you have a lot of problems that is not really good for your sleep be-cause you lie awake for hours phanta-sizing about blowing up the job agency and killing every single employee in the most painful way ( or maybe that´s just me ) and when you finally get to sleep it is very late. Since I almost always had troubles with the job agency my body has now fallen into a sleeping pattern that requires that I am absolutely exhausted before I go to bed which is one of the reasons why I write this blog so late at night ( or early in the morning depending how you see it ). I tried to break this routine four times already by staying awake one whole day and going to bed at a normal time. But after a few days the old sleeping pattern emerged again. All I achieved was being extra tired for three days because I lost 8 hours of sleep and had to regain them through the week.

So my job person had called and told me that one of the 1 EURO jobs I had ap-plied for and which was already occupied at that time was free again. If you are from America you may not know what an 1 EURO job is. Think slave labor that is support-ed by the state. Basically it is an easy way for politicians to fake the unemploy-ment statistics. Not that I´m against the idea of people who have no job at the moment doing something useful with their time. But why not give them real jobs ? This way politicians are only creating a new kind of cheap slaves and before long they will start to replace real jobs.

I mean who will hire a normal worker if he can get somebody to do the same work for 1 EURO an hour ? No, I think this is just one stupid idea in a long line of stupid ideas. This way the pressure on workers and the job market will only grow. I mean it will not be long before you will always have a little voice in your head that says : Somebody is willing to do your job for far less.

Anyway, on Friday I had to go to the bank, renew the lottery ticket, buy two new folders, make some photo copies for my ap-plications, complete my applications, go to the post office to send the applica-tions, buy eucalyp-tus drops for my cough, get money from the bank, drop by the comic shop.....and if all that is not enough to search the whole town of Ludwigs-burg to find the Christian Believecenter ( I know that´s not a very good translation but I didn´t name it and Faithcenter doesn´t sound much better ).

On the map it looked like it was just near the station but I found out that in reality it is at the outskirts of another part of town. What looked like a nice stroll through my home town turned quickly into one of the most grueling marches in the history of mankind leaving me physically and mentally near the point of breakdown. Of course there were no signs which was the reason why I not only had to follow the three longest streets of Ludwigsburg I also overshoot my destination for about 1 kilometer and had to double back. That was also the reason why I finally found it because it is only visible from a far distance when you are coming from the opposit direction. So I had to walk for two hours only to find out that, no, there was no open job. All the suffering for nothing. I only wanted to go home. And that´s the reason that I´m writing this the following day.

Like I said I was at the comicshop and I got some comics from my pull list :

FIN FANG FOUR 1 There´s just one reason I bought this issue : Roger Langridge. I discovered his work in Paradox Press BIG BOOK OF URBAN LEGENDS where he drew my favorite story ( which even was an in an episode of X-FACTOR the tv series where they said it was a true story - even Hollywood can fall victim to urban legends ). Almost any comic from him is worth the money except this strange one where he also wrote the stories. Don´t remember the name ( maybe it was ZOOT ) but it was like watching a train wreck. Fing Fang Four on the other hand is a really nice story. Not the comic of the century but an entertaining read for all fans of Roger.

  • THE THING 1 - 4 Okay, I´ve been writing about it a few times now I finally did it. I pulled Dan Slott´s THING ! Man, that should be a t-shirt. For the last three months every time I was at the comic shop I´ve been flipping through the pages and thinking about buying the issues. And now I finally decided to take a chance with this series. Because dammit, I want to read issue 8 which is the big poker game issue ! And if I expect others to buy it I have to lead by example, right ? I have already read the first two issues and so far it is really good. The character-isation is spot on ( not like in She Hulk ) and while Dan Slott had problems with depicting the Great Lake Avengers as cool guys in their own series that´s not the case with good ol Benji. Everybody knows he´s a big star just oozing of coolness. The art by Andrea Di Vito is brilliant as usual.

    Issue 1 / Issue 3 / Issue 4

RED SONJA 8 + 9 I´m still struggling with this series. I´m not a big fan of this new " from pencils directly to color " trend which can be good like in ORIGIN but normally it just looks to me like they didn´t have time to finish the comic. That was one of the reasons why I stopped buying the new CONAN series from Dark Horse and it may be this series final nail in the coffin. The variant covers are nice and all but it´s not that big of a plus if you don´t get the ones you like best. And I´m still not over the fact that Marvel HAD to change her origin to make her more of a stereotype. It wasn´t good enough to have a woman who is so good with a blade that she would only sleep with somebody who had bested her in combat because otherwise he wouldn´t be worthy of her. No, they have to give her a dramatic and " realistic " background and turn her into yet another woman motivated by rape. And the new origin doesn´t even make sense. Why should a female deity give her special powers because she was raped on the condition that IF a man bests her in combat she looses her powers ? Is that not destined to bring her into a position were she will get raped again ? I don´t think that goddess really likes Red Sonja. Maybe she was just fed up with all the prayers and said : " I know how to shut you up, bitch. I´m giving you powers but you always have to prove you deserve them. And on the one bad day when you really need me I´m going to desert you and make sure you get raped all over again. And all I´m going to do is watch. " So for now the series is on the chopping block if the stories don´t improve a lot.

TAROT WITCH OF THE RED ROSE 36 + 37 While I was no big fan of Jim Balent´s work on Catwoman I really like TAROT. My brother initially read the series and when he thought about cancelling it I read the issues. And I really liked the mix of gothic horror, comedy, porn, female empowering magic and action. So I transfered it to my pull list. I´m not sure if I have read the issue before these two issues ( I´m sure I studied the pictures ). I know, it´s not the right cover but I don´t have any other.

100 BULLETS 71 Always a good read. One of the few comic books by Vertigo with good art. Check it out for yourself !

  • Issue 65
  • / Issue 66 / Issue 67 / Issue 68 / Issue 69 / Issue 70 / Issue 71

STRANGERS IN PARADISE 81 ( 9 to final issue ) I just hate it when good series end. Especially when I have followed the series for a few years and have the feeling to know the main character intimately like on Alan Davis´EXCALIBUR ( which would have ten times as much if the title had been X-CALIBUR ). So it is a bittersweet read.

CAPTAIN AMERICA 17 So far the story with the Red Skull´s daughter is interesting especially the part AIM plays in it. I wonder what it is they need Cap´s help with. Hmmm.

  • SQUADRON SUPREME 2 Officially back on the pull list. No slips in quality so far to the old series. Only time will tell if it stays that way.

EXILES 79 ( Paul Pelletier is back !!! ) Finally....the Paul has come back.....to EXILES !!! Don´t you just love the Rock´s catch phrases ? This is the first issue by regular artist Paul Pelletier so I can finally start to read the series. I´m exited to see if I wasted the money I´ve invested so far or if the series is as good as I expect after NEGATION.

That was this installation of my pull list. Next topic : the secret conspiracy of the gay community for world domination.
