Salon del Comic de Barcelona - fanzines part 1

It's about time to get some new content on this blog and reading the last few comments it seems that I have been neglecting the comic part of this blog too much for some tastes. So I thought : let's return to the comic convention from hell ( otherwise known as the Salon del Comic de Barcelona 2008 ).

I have already told a bit about the avalanche of catastrophes that came crashing down on me. And there was more to come. Like on my last visit I decided to go to the fanzine section first. The first day is always the slowest convention day so you can check out all the booths without having to plow throug the crouds. Which means that most of the convention goers are at the big publishers so that the fanzine section resembles the badlands from Star Trek Voyager. So they are always happy when someone stops at their table and buys something. Come on, these guys are the soul of the industry.

Anyway, everybody else leaves it for the last day to spend their last bucks. But come on, that never works out. We all know it. So after getting the news that Adam Hughes was not going to appear and that the possibility of finally getting a Power Girl sketch

seemed like something out of an pre - postnuclear wasteland.....I thought : at least I can get some new cool stuff at the fanzine section. What could possibly go wrong ?

Well, to begin........I couldn't find them. They weren't at the same place they had been the year before and it took me a few hours to find them. This time they were more in the center of the convention ( last time they were right before the exit ) so that was a big plus for them but it was distracting for me. And not all of the fanzines that were representing last year had decided to return. According to the internet USTED is alive and well but they had no table and I couldn't find any copies at the dealers tables.

But what hurt even more was that SENOR K was not there. Last year I couldn't buy all the issues and I had really hoped to read more about everybody's favorite spanish nazicat.

The only magazine that I remembered from last year was RANTIFUSO. They constantly put other publications to shame ( especially if they claim to be more professional or think they are better like COMIXENE ) and they make it look easy : not only did they publish RANTIFUSO 5 since last year.....no, with a bit of effort they also managed to finish issue 6 just in time for this years convention.

And I use the word magazine instead of fanzine because with it's bookshelf format and all the pages in color they can compete with any book from big time publishers like Marvel or DC. Like most of the comics I bought in the fanzine section. I mean RANTIFUSO offers you 52 full colored pages for a measly 3 bucks - they crush the competition. You don't get a 52 pages book from Marvel or DC for 3 bucks.

Like I said, there were two issues out so I chose to buy issue 5. I had planned to buy issue 5 on the first day and issue 6 on the last day....I know. Sometimes I don't listen to my own advice. I should have known that on the last day I would forget all the important things - like buying the DEATHNOTE simulacrum. It's a deathnote notebook that comes with a real feather ( yes, the one from the animal ).

But back to rantifuso 5 ( from now on I'm going to write it in small letters because I'm a lazy bastard.....sue me ). Last year I wrote a pretty harsh review of issue 4 in part because I didn't understand some of the stories. Yes, on top of being lazy I'm stupid. In some stories I had problems with the spanish language and in others I took what was meant to be a satire as a serious story. Sometimes it's a bit hard to understand spanish humor - like the results of this year's eurovision song contest clearly showed. Viva chiki chiki !

Anyway I was rather anxious to find out how this new issue of rantifuso was going to compare to it's precedessor. Because like I had already commented in the review of issue 4 in my opinion they were just one small step from playing in the big leagues. And like last issue once you turn the really cool cover you find a plethora of the most diverse short stories.

The first one MAUI EL TRAMPOSO ( Maui the cheater ) by Bodo tells a folk story of the polynesian god Maui and how he tamed the sun. I did a bit of research and that's real polynesian mythology. The graphic part is really appealing but there are some lengths in the story. Now I don't know if that's intentional to resemble the storytelling ryhthm of old folk tales or if it's to give the big events more breathing room. For me it didn't work out. In this instance the lenght of 8 pages works against it. Like we say here in Spain : the good is twice as good if it's short. Apart from that it's a really good story. And if you want to do some research about Maui here's the wiki link :

  • Maui the cheater

  • The next story SETAS ( mushrooms ) by Juan Fender is a good example for a story that sticks to the basics. With 2 pages it tells everything it has to tell even if the end is not THE most surprising one.

What is really surprising is LA VIDA DE MIERDA ( Life of shit ) the real highlight of the book. With it's 6 pages it's one of the longer stories of this anthology and also the crowning jewel. I remember that back in the days when my brother and I were still young and naive and thought that german comic readers were clamoring for top notch stuff from german comic artists.....well, we tried to work with these guys from GERMANIA COMIC TEAM. They were really good with the press releases so we tried to work with them but the stories they wrote were always very boring like they were written for little kids. Little retarded kids that don't go out into the civilisation too much. We tried to convince them to do riskier stuff ( some of the other artist really liked our ideas ) but they just didn't see comics in that way. Anyway, their main argument was that you just can't tell a good and solid story on 8 pages.

Well, chupate esto ( like they say down here ).

Daniel Utrilla ( story ) and Samu ( art ) have created one of the best stories I have read in a long time. Without exaggeration. This one has it all : comedy, murder, poetry, suspense and a really beautiful love story. Maybe Spain and it's people have a special affinity to shit. My mother told me that during the Franco regime the people were not allowed to curse and say stuff like shit and that it was a great deal when they finally said things like shit on national television. When people down here say shit it's like a bit of personal freedom. Maybe that's the reason this is the second time ( after FIZ ) that I discover a really great comic about shit. A great story that can teach us a lesson : life's a shit but love always finds a way.

The next story O LOBISOME ( o werewolf ) by Dani and Elena ( 8 pages ) is - like the title implies - a werewolf story and a strange one at that. There was already a story in the last issue by this creative team that I didn't quite understand. Like this one. Just weird.

EL FINAL ( the end ) by Juan Ferrer seems like the opposite to me. I suppose the two pages are the last two pages of a really interesting and captivating story. But for me that's a clear waste of potential. I think it's a really perfect starting point for an excellent crime fiction story. As a reader I want to know what happened to the main character to arrive at this point in his life and what happens next. Sadly we will never know. But that just shows some real storytelling skills - to make the reader care for the characters and their story.

I also didn't like the next story HYENAS ( it's the same in english - duh ) and that's mainly because I am unaware of the context with the spanish history. What I CAN say is that I liked it much better than the last story by this creative team where at the end it's revealed to be just a bad dream. Dear comic writers : please come up with something different. Anything. The worst thing that can happen to you as a reader is that at the end of the story it turns out that it was all for nothing. Just a bad dream. Or it was just a clone. Or that they were never married and that it's not a retcon and all the stories happened...they just weren't married, okay ? Let's just ignore that kind of stories. Can we do that ? I know that this alone would improve the quality of comics....like a lot !

The next two pages present EL NINO CABRON ( something like " the asshole kid " since most spanish four letter words are impossible to translate or at least lose a lot of strength in the translation ) is another story by Samu - this time flying solo. A really witty take on Yves Saint Exupery's LITTLE PRINCE a children's book that's quite famous in Spain. You see ? I get satire - if I know it's satire. What's really strange is that in this book I like the stories that don't really shine in the art appartement. Despite the fact that I'm mainly an arts guy. Well, that just shows how important a solid story is.

And talking about solid art - that's what Y COMO SABEIS QUE ESTA MUERTO ( and how do you know it's dead ? ) offers. A short zombie story by Eduardo Ocana with a hard hitting end. I know : everybody is doing zombies. But since this isn't the newest issue ( remember : they finished issue 6 for the Salon ) it's understandable that it doesn't follow the newest trends.

A little more upbeat is EL TALLADOR DE ESTRELLAS ( the starsmith ). The fairy tale is told on two pages and combined with LA VIDA DE MIERDA this issue of rantifuso turns out to be a rather prosaic issue.

Last but not least INDIAN SUMMER by David is my second favorite story in the whole issue. The question remains if it's so good BECAUSE it's only one page or IN SPITE OF the fact that it's only one page. Aside from that it's obvious that it has fantastic storytelling because it almost impossible to come up with a surprise ending on one page. Overwhelming ! I can only say : Ole !

On the following page is a collage by Ela titled CAIDA LIBRE ( free falling ) and I'm not quite sure if it's a comic story or a work of art. And here I thought David Mack's KABUKI was hard to read. Not my cup of tea but if you are into that kind of stuff....to each his own.

Aside from that this issue has a double page spread by Monica Armino called GRUPO RANTIFUSO that would have been a wonderful wraparound cover, 2 pages of sketches and 3 alternative covers.

So what's the verdict ? In my last review I wrote that it's only a question of WHEN rantifuso is ready to play in the big leagues and not IF. It was evident that that moment was inevitable. The truth is you are never ready to make the big leap. Because you're never prepared - not really. It's sad that I forgot to buy the next issue to see if the rise in quality continues and if they could take it one step further. I'm very anxious to see the progress of this publication.

Excellent work guys ! Just continue in this direction. Here is the link to their blog if you don't want to look through all my old posts to find it. Sorry, no permanent link on the linksection but those are only for guys who put my blog on their linksection as well. I know that's hard but otherwise nobody puts links for my blog on their websites. Yes, it's hard out here for a comicpimp.

My spanish vacation - Part 4

Now after two posts that had absolutely nothing to do with my visit to the comic convention in Barcelona I´m finally back. Sorry about that, but sometimes you have to act on the urge of the moment. And I have a feeling that it will take a few more posts to cover the entire event. I mean this is already the fourth post and with any luck I can wrap up the first day of the convention in this one.

We are still on the topic of fanzines. So without further ado let´s get to the next one. Rantifuso ( a combination of rant and difuso ) while being much more professional in size and printing than USTED is not on the same level contentwise. All of the stories of USTED 3 could be published in an anthology magazine like NEGATIVE BURN or DARK HORSE PRESENTS.

But while Rantifuso 4 is a 52 page comic in full color for 3 EUROs it is still on the fanzine level. The stories are all interesting but they lack the last kick. It´s hard to put into words but there is one thing missing - the original ending. Something surprising that differianciates the stories from anything you have read before. All the stories begin really interesting but they all loose their momentum towards the end. Maybe in one or two years time they are ready to play in the big leagues.

A LA GALLEGA is a story about two guys going fishing and crossing paths with a sea monster. It´s not what you expect but the ending does not have much of a punch.

DESEANDO AMAR is one of the typical " slice of life " autobiographical stories that are already done to death. Without a captivating art style or a story that makes you interested in the main charakter this story of erotic obsession remains well below it´s possibilities.

GETAFE SECTOR 3 is a story done in a mangastyle that for me sums up what I hate about most short stories involving time travel : the cliche about the time loop. Whenever comic writers run out of ideas for an ending when they write a time travel story they always resort to the old time loop ending. The ending leads into the beginning which in turn has the effect that the story looses all direction, all meaning and you as the reader just wasted all the time it took you to read the story.

DISSUELTA EN LUVIA is a story somewhere between prose and fantasy story that deals with homecoming and is pretty weird.

LA ULTIMA FOTO is a story that reminds me a little of the TWILIGHT ZONE series but for the five pages the storytelling is too decompressed. You get the impression that the story ends before the interesting part begins.

EL VIGILANTE KIKO, a story about a security guard going on a killing spree, is another example of a failed story because after writing himself into a corner the writer resorts to the old " it´s all been a strange dream " ending. Which is also on my list of endings I just hate. Right after the time loop thing.

EL DIABLO ESPERA is the only story that really works. Which is a shame because with it´s two pages it is one of the shortest in this comic. The tale that takes place in the wild west has the only surprising ending that shows when to forgive....and when not to forgive.

NINFEMENIAS is the only part I did not read being a two page collage with a lot of words....anyway, besides of the pages of KABUKI where this is an integral part of the comic I don´t read comic versions of sudokus. The last three pages contain some sketches and alternate versions of the cover. All in all a good package but like I said, the stories could have benefitted from a little more work.

I´ve included two links. The first one is the link to their webpage so you can look at more samples of the other issues. And because the issue number one sold out you can download it in pdf - format for free !

  • rantifuso website

  • The second one is for the rantifuso blog

  • rantifuso blog

  • Another fanzine I bought is XD fanzine. Now I didn´t find any pictures about this one only the cover I posted here. They had three or four issues, one about NARUTO and one about DEATHNOTE. On the first day I bought the DEATHNOTE issue but when I returned on the last day the NARUTO issue was sold out and I bought the SANDMAN Special instead. XD fanzine is also 52 pages but in black and white and more poket book size and it costs only 2 EUROs. Unlike Rantifuso and USTED, the XD fanzine issues are always theme issues which collect shortstories, parodies or prose about a certain theme. The SANDMAN Special contains several stories ranging from funny to nightmarish. A few are very strange and some of them are not for the squeamish and should not be read at night.

The DEATHNOTE issue is a flipbook with one side dedicated to DEATHNOTE ( which was the main reason for me to buy the book ) and the other to urban legends. The latter one being the weak part of the comic. All the stories present the usual urban legends published in books like THE BIG BOOK OF URBAN LEGENDS from PARODOX PRESS. If they had chaged the endings to something more unusual or told some urban legends that originate in Spain I would have liked it better.

What I really liked is the DEATHNOTE part that presents some really interesting alternate endings for the story. Since I still have to read the ending of DEATHNOTE I don´t know how close the stories are to the actual ending. But at this point I see them as some interesting glimpses into parallel dimensions that present possible endings.

  • Here´s a link to their website

  • As a resume I have to say that I enjoyed the XD fanzine issues more than the rantifuso number 4. That´s all for today. In the next post I can hopefully wrap up the first day.

Before coming to the clips of today I want to mention one of my pet pevees : comic artists that are not doing much comic work anymore. It seems that there are artists that are considered to much " old school " to get comic book work. Nowadays you have to have a flashy artstyle or be a " hot " artist instead of being a master storyteller or knowing stuff like perspective or anatomy. Sometimes I get the feeling that comic veterans like George Perez or Dave Gibbons are only inches away from sharing this fate.

The reason why I´m mentioning it is that while surfing the metal bikini website I stumbled upon a picture done by Bob McLeod of Princess Leia. I remember when I was starting to discover american comics Bob McLeod was a very prolific artist doing the art on the first issues of NEW MUTANTS. Aside from having inked all artists at Marvel at one time he also did the inks on SUPERMAN and later on took over penciling it too somewhere around the TIME AFTER TIME storyline. To tell the truth if you were reading comics in the 80s you knew the name Bob McLeod.

Judging from the pics I included here he can still draw circles abround most artists. But because it seems more important to have some new manga influenced style or such than to have the ability to bring out a monthly book I can´t remember when I saw the last comic by Mr. McLeod. Come on, Marvel guys. With all the series that are coming out there are at least five books that have worse art. Same thing at DC. I´ve included the link to his website you can check out his art for yourself. If that guy doesn´t know how to draw I don´t know who does. That´s all I want to say.

  • Since one of the topics of my spanish vacation is Jack Kirby and his creations this time I´m finally posting something comic related. Here is a clip from the Justice League cartoon which has not been shown in Germany with Darkseid. Best villain ever.

Now what I want to know is how the produces of this show can triumph were many writers of the comic book League fail : showing what´s cool and unique about even the unknown c - list heroes like Bwana Beast or Vigilante ( the cowboy ). This is my favorite Flash moment. I swear I get goose bumps every time I see it. This is just a " FUCK YEAH " Flash moment.

My spanish vacation - Part 3

It seems the good weather is a thing of the past in Germany. At least for now. Last week it was already getting colder and raining more often. Today was especially stormy with thunderbolts and the whole nine yards of rain.

Sometimes I get the feeling that writing Germany´s best comic - related blog begins to become a burden. There is so much stuff to write about, so many other things I have to do that stuff keeps piling up with no end in sight. And the higher the pile gets the more difficult it becomes to decide which part of the pile needs immediate attention.

But whenever I begin to feel this way something reminds me why I started the whole thing. I start to read something in an internetforum and feel the obligation ( or the urge ) to write. And then I get the reaction and instantly remember what sucks about writing on messageboards. Like the fact that you have to explain the most basic things and bring a hundred examples. You could write something like " The sky is blue. " and you can bet that immediately somebody will write something like " Sayz who, retard ? You ? What do you know ? "

And then you begin to argue and you just know nobody will even read what you write or consider your point of view no matter how eloquent you present your arguments. So you spend one hour writing an intelligent, funny, brilliant response only to have it erased by the some glitch in the messageboard software. At three o´clock in the night.

And you think : What am I doing here ? Isn´t this why I started my blog ? Because I had enough of all the negativity and bitching ? And than you get on with writing your blog. Because you don´t have to argue if the sky is or is not blue. You can just send your thoughts out into the void of the bloggospace and people can take it or not.

Now if you are an avid reader of my blog ( sure, like there are readers who read this on a regular basis - aside from my three loyal readers ) you may have noticed that the last few days the only thing I had in this post was a notice and the links. What happened is that I thought I could put more reviews about the fanzines I bought into the last post. But the days went by and I never got around to add it until it finally became time to wrap the post up. And since I already had the links posted I just put them into this post. By the way, I´m writing this ( or begin to write ) on Monday.

Another fanzine I bought on the first day is USTED issue 3. I chose issue 3 because I was thumbing through all the issues and the first two were drawn entirely by one artist. Not that I have something against that artist but one reason for going to the convention was to get to know the spanish comic scene and the spanish artists. And I like a bit of variety in my reading material.

The other reason was that when I was looking through issue 3 I read the story " El buitre " which is an adoption of a story by Kafka. You can´t loose with Kafka. There is always this stigmata attached to Kafka that I encountered on numerous ocassions. Because people think that reading Kafka is hard or difficult. Which it isn´t. As someone who has read Kafka I can tell you that he writes some of the most accessible stories I have ever read. No difficult language, no verbose writing style and no highfalluting words. Heck, it´s easier to read and understand Kafka than the mighty Thor or Reed Richards.

No, the real problem are all the book critiques and intellectuals who go on forever what exactly the work of Kafka means. My tip is, if you want a good laugh just get one of the poket books with Kafka´s work that has the annotations that explains what the stories " really mean ". I mean they give the most irrelevant things importance and base their whole deeper meanings on it. Like the fact that Kafka spent a lot of time in bed. With a complete list of which scenes in Kafka´s work take place in bed or dormitories.

So he was lazy. Like a lot of intelligent people. Intelligent people are lazy and that´s the reason why most inventions were even invented in the first place. The remote control ? Invented by a guy who was too lazy to get up and change the tv channel. The vcr ? Invented by a guy who was too lazy to watch the tv shows at the time they were broadcasted. The car ? Invented by a guy who was too lazy to ride a bike. So if you are a lazy guy don´t feel bad about it. Use it to invent something and make a lot of money. But back to the fanzines.

I wasn´t disappointed with the fanzine. USTED 3 is black and white with a blue colored cover and manages to present seven stories on 40 pages. The stories range from your ordinary slice of life story to the weird and bizarre and even to gangster stories or the abstract. It´s like a ride on a rollercoaster with each story representing another sharp curve or a steeping looping.

Two of the stories are by Esteban Hernandez who is the artist of the first two issues. The other stories each has a different artist and they all have different art styles. Especially the artist of " Itaca deconstruida " reminded me a little of Marc Hempel´s work on GREGORY and TUG & BUSTER.

So whatever you prefer artwise or storywise you will probably find it in this fanzine.

The first link is the blog for USTED fanzine. The second one is the website of Esteban Hernandez and the last on is his blog.
