Solicitations - done in one

This is a new record. Because of the last exhaustive solicitations round there is not that much left to say about this month's new solicitaions.

Keeping my distance to all speculations about what's going to happen with the death of Batman and Pa Kent.....which I will believe when I see it......and tired of telling you how bad BRAND OLD DAY is there is not much left. So I can finish it all in this post. But before that....

SOMEBODY STOP ED MCGUINESS !

I really mean it. I'm as big a fan as anybody but this is just too much. Nothing against the occasional Ed McGuiness variant cover. I am all for it - I mean the variant for Captain America was just awesome. But let's not get carried away. If someone can do 5 ( in words : five !!! ) covers in one month this person has a lot of free time besides his monthly comic duties.

Or he's using the additional time he has because Frank Cho and Artur Adams are working on Hulk for some work on the side. That's not what fill - in artists are for. The idea is to help the regular artist to regain some leeway. No matter what the case is here - somebody like maybe an editor - should channel that energy into interior pages. Because as nice as the covers are they are nothing compared to comic pages by Ed McGuiness. It doesn't even have to be a full story. A five page story in an anthology would be enough. The book would sell only because of the Ed McGuiness pages.

And what's up with Ed McGuiness' ULTIMATES storyarc ? Don't think we've forgotten all about that, Marvel. You promised us that you would publish the one who finished first : Joe Madureiras or Ed McGuiness. Well, the story from Joe Madureiras is finished ( I can only guess since I haven't read the last two issues yet ) and since you put Ed McGuiness on the new Hulk book that must mean he has finished too. So when is that coming out ?

Or do you want to leave your readers hanging like with the ULTIMATE HULK / WOLVERINE mini that is reprinted this month ? I don't want to be sarcastic but am I the only one who thinks that it's unnecessary to reprint issue 1 of this ? I bet there are still hundreds of copies at the comnic dealers because people were waiting for issue 2.

Back to Ed McGuiness : get that man some interior stuff to work on. Whatever he wants. I don't care what. As long as it's not connected to BLAND NEW DAY.

Now what's up with the rest of the solicitations ?

BLACK PANTHER 1

Marvel tries to vitalize the franchise with a new number 1. Again. I haven't read the last ten issues or so but to me it seems like they just did the last restart a few months ago. And the problem with the book was more that after the departure of John Romita Jr. they didn't manage to get a suitable replacement. They had Scott Eaton for two storyarcs but they just didn't hang onto him. And the Campbell cover is nice but if they don't bring their a - game to it they can just as well scratch the whole relaunch. No matter how good it's written if you only put second - and third - stringers on the art it's never going to be in the top spots.

NOVA 22

You are probably already reading Nova. So I don't have to tell you how great the book is, how it manages to throw you a curveball when you least expect it or how it ties into SECRET INVASION. You already know that and I don't have to lose another word about one of Marvel's best series. I just wanted to post the cover because for me this is the cover of the month.

If there was such a thing. And if I got to vote on it.

Anyway, I just like the simple yet effective design. And it tells you something about the story. How neat is that ?

SHE HULK 38

Final issue ! Well, I have to say that doesn't surprise me much. I'm more astonished it lasted this long. I already wrote something about this in my post THE SLOW DEATH OF SHE HULK were I foretold that the days of the title were numbered. I mean you just have to look at the track record : after the awful start with Bobillo they finally managed to get an a - grade artist like Paul Pelletier. They got good reviews from comic critics and a solid fanbase. And then Marvel restarts it without Pelletier and the whole crazy storylines by Dan Slott that made no sense like the Starfox as a rapist or She Hulk humping whoevers available ( and Wolverine doesn't ) or the whole " if you are special you need help " fiasko.....it didn't take a fortuneteller to see where this was headed.

What's funny is that if you are special like She Hulk and use the powers gamma radiation gave you people like Dan Slott say you are sick and need help. Because it's unnatural. If somebody like Brad Pitt uses the advantage he has over other people ( fame, money, good looks ) that's totally okay. For me that's a double standard.

Back to the train wreck that is She Hulk. Marvel still hasn't managed to get top artists on the book of their favorite character - and with that I don't mean the editors. She Hulk is the number one character among fans and artists alike so you can't tell me that it's difficult to get good people for the series. We have heard the argument again and again that there are also females reading the book but it seems that their number is not so great that it's enough to keep the title alive.

The average reader is still male so the main character should look accordingly. And I have to say : the current costume is not a good one. If you don't want to do a decent costume you should go all the way : just give her something to wear like this.

That's not much better but at least this way you get more readers.

THE SPIRIT 26

Not much to say about the book after last month. The reason why I chose this one is the cover artist. Brian Bolland is one of the big comic masters and one of the few who's able to tell a story in one single picture. With today's covers that mostly have nothing to do with the interior story and mostly just consist of a nice pin up that's a rare gift.

And that's all. Nothing mor to say about the new solicitations so next time we will return to our usual comic ramblings and hijinks. Who knows ? I might even get to do the post about Jose Luis Garcia Lopez.

    housekeeping

Yes, today I spent most of my time on old posts. Yesterday I did some maintanence stuff on my other blog and realized that I had not checked all the old posts on this blog the last time I did the big overhaul.

I had added some tags but somewhere along the way I didn't check if all the pictures were in the right place. I posted a link to a COMICBABE BATTLE post where the pic was too close to the title so I corrected that. Well, going over the COMICBABE BATTLE posts I found out that this was the case in most posts. So because I wanted to fix that before returning to Germany I spent most of my day on that.

I have also begun to read all the old posts to check for spelling errors ( there are still quite a few left ) but for today I'm finished. I have to do one more complete overhaul for the tags.....but I have to postpone it to some other day. I think I have to add more tags. The idea was that I would a tag on every post where I write a lot about.....say Green Lantern......and by clicking the tag you can read all of the posts about Green Lantern.

Well, now I think that I should post a tag about Green Lantern in every post where I mention Gren Lantern. So that anyone who's interested in who this guy may be can just click the tag and read all the other posts. The only case where I'm going to be a bit more careful with that is Power Girl who's mentioned in every other post.

Now you might say that this is a lot of work for old posts but I recently got a comment for a post about X - STATIC which shows that even old posts get new readers. Tomorrow I will be busy with the new solicitation images so maybe next time we can start the next round of the solicitations.

    Googeling myself resurrected

Right now I'm going over my posts because I lost my big post about Destiny's Child on my other blog. It's a bit weird to see the old posts on my other blog because the first ones are rather short and only have a few things that I added here. The difficult thing has always been to decide which posts to put there and which ones to put here.

One of the more difficult ones was the post about googeling myself which contained a lot of comic related links and stuff. The only reason I put it on my other blog was that there were some clips and pictures of Traci Brooks. Well, I have recently done a new post about her on my other blog and the link foor her webpage that I included doesn't work anymore.

So there's no reason to have it on my other blog anymore. Here's the post about googeling myself :

Today there is no topic on my mind so I spent my day editing the past two posts ( that had a lot of writing and syntax errors ) and googleling myself. It provides for endless hours of fun to just type your own name into the search engines and wait for the results it comes up with.

Looks like I´m giving a press conference. Or I´m black.

From time to time I like to read about my accomplishments on the internet and it´s always interesting to read facts about yourself you didn´t know. Like that you are a student who has helped to resurrect a lost language. Or that you are an excellent bottle of wine that goes for 18 bucks. It´s nice to know what you´re worth and what people are willing to pay for you.

The other reason ( besides learning that you are a plastic surgeon of some reknown ) is that I´m also googleling my blog to see where I´m mentioned. And to give props if I somehow forgot it. Which can happen. I´m only human. Almost perfect - but still human. The first thing I found was an entry on el rantiblog the blog of the fanzine rantifuso. The name of the entry is " 100 % of the germans read rantifuso " and they mention my review on my blog of their fanzine I bought at the Salon del Comic this year. And they kind of tear me a new one which I.....well, kind of deserve because I didn´t get some of the stories. Just call me stupid. But like I said there is potential for greatness there and it wouldn´t surprise me if they were playing in the big leagues one or two years down the road.

They were even so nice to post a link to my blog. The only thing that confused me was that apparently my name is Hans - Joachim but there are far worse names to be called in german so what the heck. Here´s the link to their entry where you can read all about Hans - Joachim´s little blog

  • Hans Joachim blog

  • Another blog that mentions me is the blog Polencomics of Pavel Ortega the writer / artist / mastermind / genius behind the wonderful spanish independent comic EL SENOR K. Since last I visited some parts of my review of his comics have been posted on the blog ( altough before I could correct them ) together with a link to my blog. Thanks Mr. Ortega. Here´s the direction

  • Polencomics

  • Yes, you never know how many readers you really have. It seems that

  • one of my post about Black Panther

  • was used as a reference in a debate on a message board regarding the existence of a certain german word.

  • the link

  • It´s nice to be recognized as some kind of authority. Regardless of what.

And I stand by my original opinion : " Lieberstesh " is not a german word and in my 39 years living in Germany I have never heard anything sounding remotely like it. Well, nothing that makes any sense. And you can quote me on that.

And that´s all we have time for today. Maybe you try it yourself - who knows ? You could be a famous inventor without knowing it.

    BEST.LEAGUE.cartoon.EVER !

It seems that there really is no escape from cartoons for me. Case in point : JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED - Season Three.

Like most of my posts about cartoons this is old news to my readers in the USA but for my fellow german readers ( if I still have any ) and all the others abroad this might be interesting. I thought that the next cartoon show I would be writing about was AMAZING SPIDER - MAN and even that wasn't supposed to happen in the near future because after seeing the first episodes on the net I had taken a time out.

Originally I wanted to write about the great comics I have read since coming to Spain with a focus on recent comics like the unbelievable IRON MAN - HAUNTED story ( one of my picks for Story of the Year ) or the blockbuster GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY or AVENGERS : THE INITIATIVE issues 14 and 16. Because I will go back to Germany end of this month I was catching up on my reading going through the lastest issues of the FINAL CRISIS tie - ins.

By the way, I hope I got the FINAL CRISIS on my pull list. I was a bit surprised to find out that J.G.Jones had a bit of help on the art in issue 4 but if it's from someone like my absolute favorite artist Carlos Pacheco.......bring it on. No one draws them big all superheroes brawls like Carlos.

Like I was saying I was catching up on my reading but after reading the latest two issues of NOVA I just had to stop. Because they were so incredibly good that everything I would have read after that would have paled in comparison. So I was on the internet thinking about what I wanted to do now and then I had the urge to watch something. I had no more links for watching AMAZING SPIDER - MAN but during my research for the LEGION OF SUPERHEROES posts I had found a page that was supposed to be for the JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED series.

I tried some links and found out they were for episodes of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED but the names of the episodes and the plot synopsis were all wrong. I watched one or two before remembering that back when they had aired the show on german tv I had missed the beginning of the last episode of Season Two EPILOGUE. So I watched the episode and that could have been.

But just below the link for that episode there were links for the third season. And I have been watching them the last two day ( only if you want to know why I didn't post sooner ). Now I have read that this season was never originally planned and that they produced it as an afterthought. Well, let me say, it's the best of all seasons.

Not only does it have a secret conspiracy of the Society of Supervillains that's the connecting plot element but it seems they put everything they loved and couldn't fit into the first two seasons. They got so many heroes and villains crammed into this one that your brain almost explodes. And if that sounds like a nonstop, blockbuster action slugfest that's right. But they also have episodes that concentrate on the characters and they even manage to put the spotlight on the lesser known league members.

For me as a longtime DC comics reader it's just three kinds of cool to see characters like Goldface, Sonar, Warlord or the Legion of Superheroes on the screen. Like always they are presented in such a way that the comic readers will appreciate the hints at continuity but the non comics readers aren't taken out of the story ( do we yet have a name for comic muggels ? ). I could go on and on about all the gret guest stars and what happens where but I don't want to spoil too much. The third season has come out in Germany as a DVD just recently so if you are still thinking about if you should get it or not here are the episodes to watch.

Justice League Unlimited Season Three :

  • I AM LEGION

  • King Faraday, Aztek, Fire, Ice and a return to Blackhawk Island !

  • SHADOW OF THE HAWK

  • The extremists, Shadowthief and.......Hawkman ! Really.

  • CHAOS AT THE EARTH'S CORE

  • Skartaris. That's right, the Justice League meets Travis Morgan, Warlord.

  • TO ANOTHER SHORE

  • The legend of the Viking Prince.

  • FLASH AND SUBSTANCE

  • Flash against the Rogues ( and Linda too ). With Mark Hamill as the voice of Trickster.

  • DEAD RECKONING

  • Deadman, return to Gorilla City, JL Ape and more villains than you can shake a stick at ( like Goldface ).

  • PATRIOT ACT

  • Spysmasher, the Newsboy Legion, the Shaggy Man, Crimson Avenger, Arsenal and a spotlight on Vigilante and Shining Knight.

  • THE GREAT BRAIN ROBBERY

  • Red Tornado, Dr. Light ( the good one ) and Flash and Lex switch brains.

  • GRUDGE MATCH

  • Yep, this is the one you've been hearing so much about on the internet. Roulette returns in this all girl fight episode. It's Black Canary against Fire. And Black Canary and Huntress versus Hawkgirl and Vixen. And all four of them against Wonder Woman. It doesn't get any better.

  • FAR FROM HOME

  • The Fatal Five and Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes.

  • ANCIENT HISTORY

  • The Gentleman Ghost, more Shadowthief and more Hawkman.

  • ALIVE

  • The Society of Supervillains vs the Society of Supervillains.

  • DESTROYER

  • Darkseid is.

And that's all for today. Thanks, and......wait a minute. There is more. I originally just wanted to put up the link to the page from where I got the links but the problem was that all the episodes had the wrong title and were not in chronological order. Even the plot synopsis were wrong. It seems that whoever started the page lost interest pretty quickly and never updated the new episodes.

Well, being the perfectionist I am I wanted to put them in the right order. And while doing that I realized that since I already were going to put the third season on my blog - why not season one and two ? And since I'm at it why not the first series ? If I really want to do some good for my german readers I should do that. Because in Germany they showed only the first thirteen episodes of the first season.

And they totally skipped the entire season two. Which made absolutely no sense since JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED constantly referenced events from the second season. Anyway, I have added all the episodes from JUSTICE LEAGUE so you can finally watch them and find out what all the fuss was about with the friendship between Hawkgirl and Solomon Grundy, what they meant by Hawkgirl betraying the world to alien invaders and the first meeting between Black Canary and the Blackhawks.

Me I'm going to keep watching the episodes the rest of the weekend because I also haven't seen season two of JUSTICE LEAGUE. As always I hope there was something interesting for you.
