This is not the post I was planning to make. This is even not the Adam Hughes post I wanted to make. No, that was going to be about his work for PENTHOUSE COMIX. But while going through the Adam Hughes folder and preparing all the original art for said post I stumbled upon a piece of original art from the fantastic GEN 13 : ORDINARY HEROES two part mini series and so I decided to make a quick post to spotlight it on the blog.
Man, with this, BATTLE CHASERS , SPAWN and Harris Comics VAMPIRELLA - which had a lot of covers by Adam Hughes too - we have had a lot of 90s comicbook content on the blog lately. Which comes as no surprise to the longtime followers of the blog since I have always said that the 90s were not as bad a comic decade as some people may paint it. Sure, there was a lot of bad comicbook series out there and probably much more than in previous decades. But there were more series published in general than in previous decades so if you go only by the numbers they are going to be higher naturally. But if you go with the number of the bad comicbooks in relation to all the good comicbooks that number will be lower because there also were more good comicbooks printed than in previous decades.
Another misconception is that people compare just the number of bad comicbooks that started in the 90s with the number of good books that started in the 90s and that gives you a skewed view of the comicbook scene of that time. Because what a lot of people don't factor in - and what made the 90s such a good decade to read comicbooks for us who lived through it - is that while the number of good comicbook series that started in the 90s may not have been high there were still a lot of books that had started in the 80s and which were still going strong in the 90s.
Plus the 90s had a huge influx of independent comic artists creating their own books so if you only looked at superhero comics you only got part of the picture. Anyway, I have already written about this ad nauseum so I won't bore my regulat readers for it and those new to the blog can check out my old posts where I wrote about that topic. But for Today it's all about Adam Hughes GEN 13 : ORDINARY HEROES. Which back in its day caused quite a stir, first because of Adam Hughes art - of course - and then because the second issue took forever to come out. Now I have also tackled the topic of late books and I am ambivalent about it. Because on one side I can understand the comic shop owners who need the issues to come out on time and as a fanboy I want to have it as soon as possible.
But than there is that other part that prefers to wait and get a better product than have it come out faster as a rushed issue with subpar art.
Also when it is later reprinted in a collection nobody cares how late the issue was only how it looks. And speaking of reprint collections I can't even tell you where you can find these issues - aside from hunting down the original issues - because they used to be part of a GEN 13 trade but only in the first printing and I have no idea if they put it back into the trade in newer printings, if they even reprinted that trade or if it is included in any of the reprints now. Anyway, I still have to prepare the material for the REAL Adam Hughes post so let's get to the good stuff.
