Solicitations reloaded - Part 1

I had hoped to put up a few posts before having to do the solicitations again but like always it wasn´t to be.

On one side the internet has not been working too well so that I couldn´t risk beginnig a post without knowing if all my hard work wasn´t going to be lost with one mistake. On the other side the internet was working all too well meaning that somehow miracuously internet explorer was working again so I had to seize the opportunity and download as much pictures as I could. You never know how long it will last.

After the last two really comicrelated posts about actual relevant comics I wanted to post a few other more light posts about the next candidate for SEARCH FOR THE NEXT POWER GIRL or COMICBABE BATTLE but the topic of solicitations is more up to date right now. Who knows ? Maybe this will become a comic blog after all.

Although there will be a COMICBABE BATTLE special in one of my next posts about the costumes of the Legion of Super Heroes.

Now that they appear in the pages of Action Comics it really shows that the 70s costumes were much better than those new ones - especially the costumes of the female members.

But todays topic are the new solicitations so let´s get right to it. Initially I didn´t want to do this month´s solicitations because they are not as much as the past few months. To most of them there was nothing new to add and I´m not doing this for the sake of doing it. But maybe it´s better this way. With fewer things to comment on maybe this time I can wrap it up in one neat post. Although this post will be a little longer thanks to the clips I decided to include.

Okay, let´s start this month´s solicitations review with the DC part which always comes first :

All Star Batman 10

In the last months this series has picked up the pace a little bit as more and more issues appeared on a regular basis. Now the story in itself was really not what I expected. I always try to go into new series with very few expectations and try to be surprised. But I somehow got the idea that this was going to be a follow up or better prequel to HUSH. Initially it was planned that Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee would return to BATMAN after HUSH with a six - issue storyarc detailing the beginning of the Batman and Robin partnership. Robin should get to meet the DC universe and experience Batman in his prime.

Well, that was the plan anyway. Somewhere along the way Jeph Loeb went on to do other things and Frank Miller was supposed to take the reigns in the writing part. Also the series wasn´t part of the BATMAN series anymore and it was expanded to twelve issues. In the end it became ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN THE BOY WONDER. And we all know it turned out to be a different beast. Don´t get me wrong....I really enjoy the series. And not only because it pisses off so many fanboys and Frank Miller is obviously totally out of control. But a small part of me wonders what the original series would have been like - like I sometimes wonder what the original series that became AVENGERS FOREVER would have been like or the original JLA / JSA by Carlos Pacheco. Robin´s first meeting with Black Canary, Superman or Wonder Woman. At the pace it´s going we can be happy if he meets Police Comissioner Gordon at the last page of issue twelve.

I´m still reading though.

Brave and the Bold 12

So this is it. The big finale to the second storyarc about the Challengers of the unknown and the book of destiny. Guest starring everyone from the look of the cover. But there better be some Power Girl in it. I don´t know why Wonder Woman´s here again. Okay, she doesn´t get much exposure in her own book but that´s because it doesn´t come out on a regular basis. I guess, since I´m only buying the Dodson issues and my brother seems to have given up on the title. But is that any reason to worm her way into BRAVE AND THE BOLD and take away screentime from Power Girl ? So here´s my demand : more Power Girl ASAP. Make it so !

Under normal circumstances this is the point where you can start to say goodbye to your favorite series. Back when I started reading comic books ( I´m talking about american comic books here ) this was the point where creative teams changed. With a lot of luck a creative team stayed on a title for more than one year which meant that they held on for a second year to end their run with number 25. But most series changed their creative team after the first year. For creators it might be tedious to devote more than one year of their lives to a certain cast of characters but as a reader you want stability. After twelve months you have become acustomed to a creative team and the least you want is change. If you don´t believe me just ask yourself : which runs do you remember more fondly ? The ones that had two or three different creative teams or the ones with one creative team that did twenty or thirty issues in a row ?

There are a few exceptions like the FLASH series that ( apart from the dark period when Scott Kolins was drawing it ) had outstanding creative teams throughout it´s entire duration but most series suffer from it. Just look at SUPERMAN / BATMAN. The first 26 issues were the creative climax of the series with fantastic storyarcs by Carlos Pacheco and Ed McGuiness. But everything after that was downhill. It doesn´t even seem to be the same series. With the first 26 issues you knew why it didn´t appear within the pages of the regular books but what´s coming out now could have been printed in any issue of Superman or Batman. While DC used to bring it´s A - Game to the book it now seems that they cram every creative team in it that was not good enough for the regular titles. The art is detoriating from storyarc to storyarc and the stories get more confusing the longer the series goes.

Anyway, I don´t know what´s the future of BRAVE AND BOLD. The only thing I know is as long as George Perez is on board so am I.

Black Adam trade

A wonderful cover by Alex Ross on the collection of the Black Adam mini. I still don´t know why I didn´t read the book. I like Black Adam. From his beginnings in the POWER OF SHAZAM book that ended before it´s time to his appearances in JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA he took the reader on a journey that kept getting more interesting. And of all the stories in 52 his story was the most interesting as well as the most tragic. He went from villain to hero to vigilante to despot. He gained everything only to lose more than his own paradise.

And I´m a big fan of Dough Mahnke ever since I read his first two MASK trades. If you ever want to see the evolution of a comic artist in fast forward just check those two collections out. In the first issue the art is so weak that you don´t know why he got the gig in the first place. In the last issue of the second trade he´s already an artist who´s destined to play in the big leagues. I bouhgt most of his stuff like MAJOR BUMMER or the excellent JLA spin - off JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE. So why didn´t I read it ?

I don´t know. Sometimes the right character and the right artist are not enough. Like on ARROWSMITH by the brilliant Carlos Pacheco. It was a wonderful story with lots of cool stuff but I guess somehow I missed the costumes. People say that one of the things they find ridiculous about superhero comics are the costumes in bright shining colors. And while I agree that the costumes of today´s new heroes should look much more like the ones by Superboy or Wondergirl ( her first one with the goggles ) I also have to mention that without the flashy costumes something important is missing. Not everything is about realism in comics. I read ARROWSMITH and I really enjoyed the book but I didn´t enjoy it as much as the JLA / JSA work of Carlos Pacheco or his AVENGERS FOREVER series. Hmm, that´s the second time I mentioned it in this post.

Anyway, I saw the preview pages of the first issue of the Black Adam series and thumbed through a few issues in the comic shop but there wasn´t a feeling that I just had to get it. Maybe I´m just waiting for the trade.

Countdown Special Kamandi

From all of Jack Kirby´s work nothing is looked upon as unfavorable by critics as Kamandi. If they even mention it at all. On the other side no other series by Jack Kirby is loved more by comic creators and comicafficionados all over the world as much as Kamandi. It keeps popping up in books like in the Superman / Batman storyarc by Carlos Pacheco. Maybe the general idea is much to simple to appeal to comic critics. Which is an argument - but with everything in comics it´s not the idea alone that makes or breaks a series. Much of it lies in the execution and on that front Jack Kirby shines on Kamandi. I have only read the series in the spanish translation and in black and white so I´m really looking forward to experience it in the fourcolored original.

Jonah Hex 30

Another issue by TORPEDO artist Jordi Bernet from the look of it. I totally forgot that I wanted to check the new issues of Jonah Hex the last time I was at the comic shop. Stuff like this always happens to me. I don´t know if it´s a sign of Alzheimer or if I alway shad a bad memory but it´s the same when I go to the music store. Whenever I´m at home I know exactly which artists to look for but whenever I´m actually IN the store I draw a blank. No idea. Anyway, I have to keep this series in the back of my head. If I don´t forget it as soon as I´m done with this post.

As always I have run out of time since I start to get troubles keping my eyes open and the typo ratio has just climbed 500 % in the last 30 minutes. In a few minutes SUPERNATURAL and LOST are going to start which means that that´s all my internet time for today. So I will be writing of the rest of the DC stuff in my next post which will also cover the Marvel comics.

    Happy Anniversary !

Today is the big anniversary ! One year and 58 posts of pure comic blogging goodness.

It hasn´t always been easy but I somehow managed to hang in there. I feel a little bit like the Spartans in the 300 movie.

True to form I had some problems with the internet today so I spend a lot of time burning data on discs, deleting the saved files and defragmentating the computer. But now I have 4 GB free space so I´m all ready to go. It´s almost 21.00 as I´m writing this and I hope I can finish it in one sitting before THE UNIT starts.

Now this shouldn´t take long because today I only wanted to thank my loyal readers, my sometime readers and anybody else who just landed on my little blog because he googled Power Girl. Hey, I can´t afford to be picky with my loyal readership of 3 fans. Now I was very sad when I found out that two of my links are out of business. The first one is RedJazzRadio which was my favorite music podcast who was canceled because of some legal problems. I still have left the link available because there are now some links to other Jazzpodcasts and Videocasts.

The second one is Phil & Lamond´s Comickolumne which is still up but which will not be updated for the forseeable future. That´s really sad because I have always enjoyed their reviews which were 99 percent spoilerfree which is something I can´t stress enough in today´s day and age. It was only in german but for all german comicfans it was an undispensable resource especially for the ones who could not afford to read all the comics involved in such crossovers like 52 or CIVIL WAR. The actual content is still available so all my german readers should check it out. Now I have thought about trying to fill that void but i´m busy with this little blog as it is. And I´m not prepared to get back to writing in german.

Anyway, today I only wanted to thank my readers especially the ones who have left a comment. It´s always nice to get feedback especially when people don´t agree with me. Keep on sending me your comments. So what lies in the future of TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN ? Since I´m going to Spain at the end of this week I will finally get to read the SUPERMAN / BATMAN issues by Carlos Pacheco and the following storyarc by Ed McGuiness. So I hope to be writing a bit more about one of my reasons for the name of this blog. More SUPERMAN. And besides that 2007 has started very promising.

With 52 and CIVIL WAR turning out so fantastic the comic landscape has become interesting again. COUNTDOWN and THE INITIATIVE are preparing to pick up the pace and with such great series like GHOST RIDER and THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD it can only get better. Frank Cho is doing MIGHTY AVENGERS, Paul Pelletier has moved on from EXILES to FANTASTIC FOUR ( I should REALLY star reading that book ) and Adam Hughes is working on ALL STAR WONDER WOMAN.

Of course there are also some bad news because some books haven´t come out for six months or more. ULTIMATES 13 has still not come out which may have something to do with the fact that Joe Madureiras and Ed McGuiness are working on season 3 and 4 simultanuously. I just hope that Marvel doesn´t plan to hold off publishing till all three are ready to flood the market. Because I think that readers might lose interest if it takes too long. Other late books are SQUADRON SUPREME ( which may have been canceled and nobody told me ), ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN ( which I guess is good news for some people ) and the gaps between issues of ALL STAR SUPERMAN are getting longer. But let´s focus on the good side. Every month those books don´t come out is a month where I have to spend less money or I can invest in other books. And at the moment it seems to me that there are more good comics out there than you can read in one month.

So I hope that the second year of TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN will be better, brighter and much more entertaining than the last. And that it will only be the beginning of many years to come.

Today´s clip is one of the funniest things I found on the internet in a long time.

    Comic reviews again

After my little rant about translations I wanted to write about some comics I have read in the last few days before returning to the last part of my Erlangen Diary. First up are two comics from my brother´s pull list :

Birds of Prey 94 - Continuing the ONE YEAR LATER story I´m still baffled who the new member of the team is. Maybe it was explained somewhere but I have no idea who the woman with the strange powers is. For the story I don´t know what Black Canary wanted to achieve with her switch for Shiva but I fear it can lead to no good.

Skye Runner 2 - Now, I never was much of a fan of fantasy comics to begin with. Most of them are too formulaic for my tastes and use the old cliches. Or they try to establish their own universe and are much too complicated. Skye Runner is the latter for me. The art is good but the story is just not for me.

Now to the comics from my own pull list :

52 Week 4 to 9 - Now, this series is much better for me. It´s interesting to see what happened in the missing year with twists and turns appearing now and then. It seems Booster Gold is about to find out what the repercussions of his altering of the time stream are. I think he has not realized it yet but when he helped Batman in finding OMAC he changed the course of history. The scene where Ralph was pissed at him because he never told him his wife was going to be murdered showed what I was thinking the whole time. I mean Booster means weel, but he COULD have prevented her death or the death of his best friend - Blue Beetle.

Another interesting thing is what The Question is all about. He seems to know more than he let´s on and the reader is as frustrated as Officer Montoya because we only get bits and pieces.

The new Batwoman was introduced in issue 9 but I think we will see her in costume in the next issue. Now the fact that there was so much hype about Batwoman being a lesbian is kind of weird. There are two gay members ( no pun intended ) in YOUNG AVENGERS but it never got the media attention as the new Batwoman.

Which may be due to the fact that Marvel did not make a big announcement about it like - BATWOMAN IS BACK AND SHE IS A LESBIAN. Or that Marvel already knew they were going to get negative responses for trying to do Young Avengers and they thought it would be better not to tell that two of the Young Avengers are gay. Because that is not the main focus of the stories.

Now I´m curious to find out what happens in the next issue now that Luthor has cooked up his latest sceme of...well, you will find out if you read the issues.

Maybe John Irons will be able to settle his differences with his daughter but for the moment it seems like Natasha is determined to do whatever is necessary to step out of her fathers shadow as a super heroine.

Teen Titans 37 - It was already on the chopping block. This was supposed to be my last issue of the series. The art was not as good as when it began and the last few issues have been just about the new strange members of the team. But after reading the last few pages with Robin and Wonder Girl I will keep on reading. Great characterisation and a really heartwrenching scene. Robin doesn´t handle the loss of Conner very well and it may take him some time to get over it - if ever.

Thing 7 - Now this series is on the chopping block all by itself. Many comic fans are complaining that they read to many comics and have problem cutting down on the number of series to read. My problem seems to be that I´m much too fickle and spoiled when it comes to comics. Because I find it difficult to add series to my list that achieve the high qualkity standard I expect. and when I have finally found such a gem in most cases that means it´s being cancelled in the next six months. Now it seems like spidergirl WILL be back but Dan Slott´s THING is definitely cancelled despite my pimping in this blog.

Thankfully it ends only after the big poker tournament in issue 8 which should provide for a good ending in the trade. And maybe there will be a continuation if it sells well. Now issue 7 is drawn by Kieron Dwyer who is one of the artists I like but whom I don´t see in the mainstream very much. I kind of miss his art along with the likes of Kerry Gammill, Ron Lim and Mike Zeck. I guess now that the end of the series is coming Andrea de Vito will not come back but that´s okay for me. Now in the story Ben wants to give Alicia a special gift for her birthday since he´s jealous of her new boyfriend. I´m not so sure if I like the idea of Ben and alicia not being a couple anymore but things change. Which is the main focus of the story.

One of the funniest things of the issue was the panel where there are all these signes posted around Reed´s time machine. Which obviously are there to prevent Ben from using it for his own crazy ideas. But if you have to live with a crazy brother like me you already know that it´s no use. My favorite sign was the one with the words " Remember the Alamo " which has a totally new meaning in this context. I wonder what Ben´s involvement in that historic moment was that Reed uses it to remind Ben of the dangers of time travel.

  • Thing 7

  • Fantastic Four 538 - And speaking of the everloving blue eyed idol of millions Ben is also the main focus of this issue of Fantastic Four. I´m not postin the cover because they just don´t look good. In this issue with much better inside art by Mike Mc Kone the repercussions of CIVIL WAR begins. With the Human Torch hospitalized and Reed and Susan on opposite sides of the issue Ben has to decide on which side he is going to be on. Will he fight with the people of Yancy Street or against them ? So far he has tried to be neutral but there is no chance to sit on the sidelines on this one. A very good issue.

Secret Six 2 - We get to find out more about the attack on all the secret six members in last issue. Same art team which still is not too thrilling. The only thing that I found strange was to find Ragdoll whjere he was on the last page. Didn´t he escape the attack of IBAC ? Or was this supposed to be the first Ragdoll ? Confusing.

Shadowpact 2 - Another pre-Infinite Crisis spin off so I can´t say too much about it after the second issue. Bill Willingham´s art pleases me much more than the art in Secret Six but for the story I will wait another few issues before making a verdict.

Blood of the Demon 16 - Another series that vanishes from my pull list without any involvement from my part. John Byrne seems to gear up for his big finale in this one with the fight of the two Etrigans....or was it three ? I guess I lost count but I love it nonetheless. I definitely have to check out the first issues of John Byrne´s new Atom series when it comes out. I really enjoyed all series that john Byrne has been involved in so far.

Sgt Rock - The prophecy 6 - And this series also wraps up. The end of the story was a bit strange but kind of what I expected. Great art by Joe Kubert but I think this series is more gered to fans of either Sgt Rock or Joe Kubert. Despite this I urge every reader out there to check it out. If you are not already reading it maybe you will find it interesting.

CIVIL WAR 2 - Unlike the last action packed issue this one was a litle slower paced as sides were taken and new alliances forged. The big surprise at the end was not that shocking due to the fact that it was revealed in Spider-Man. Or the Jay Leno show. Still a good read and the art by Steve McNiven looked better than ever.

And that wraps up today´s comic reviews since my uncle will be paying me a visit in a few minutes because he has trouble with his laptop. And I have to cook.

    new reads

Finally I have the chance to finish my post from Yesterday. My brother has not only taken to staying glued for hours to the computer screen he also has the annoying habit to shut down the computer before someone else uses it. So that while he can have it going for hours as long as he´s on it everytime someone else uses it that person has to restart it. But hey - it´s not like I have not enough time to post a single entry in the few minutes I manage to get on the thing. But enough of the unpleasant other offspring of my family since this blog is about comics. Well, comics and ME.

Now I did not write this post in one sitting. Again. Because I have been busy with all the preparations for Erlangen and everything else. So I am beginning to write this on the night of Thursday to Friday from midnight to....exactly 02.09 in the morning. From which I had to take a break and now am putting the finishing touches on as of Friday 16.31 hours. So let´s get right to the reviews :Squadron Supreme 3 - Very good issue. The resolution of the fight between the two fractions of the team was not like expected and we learned more about the new members on the team. And the little voice in the back of my head wondering how the uncut version of this issue might have been keeps getting lower. But it´s still there.

All Star Batman & Robin 4 - This issue went by too quick as six pages were wasted for the whole fold out spread. Don´t get me wrong, I like it if artists try new things. But this is not a new thing, it has been done before ( in the WildC.A.T.S. series by Mr. Jim Lee himself )and I don´t think it was necessary. I don´t understand what has been shown here that could not be shown in a normal double page spread. So reading the issue I was thinking the whole time what could have happened in those lost four pages. Apart from that a very good read although I´m still a bit surprised about how slow the story unfolds.

When I first read about the project it was said that this would be about Robin experiencing Batman at the height of his career with all the available women of the DC universe thrown in. At the pace the story goes we won´t see Robin in costume before issue 11. An so far we have only seen Vicky Vale and Black Canary with Wonder Woman appearing in the next issues soon. Well, with luck Catwoman or Zatanna will make an appearance before the series is over.

Yes, I know.....bitch, bitch, bitch......anyway, I´m still reading the book and I hope issue 5 will be better ( or more to my personal liking - maybe there are thousands of fans who loved the six page spread ) .

52 week 1 - 3 - So this is the big event between Infinite Crisis and One Year Later. It seems that history is not unfolding as Booster Gold expected it. Which in my opinion might be because he altered the outcome of Batman´s battle against the OMAC satellite helping him find it. Therefore a shift happens in the time - pace - continuum and what began as small divergencies become greater differences between what should have been and what is. But I could be wrong. So far I really like the idea of bringing characters like Black Adam and the Question to the forefront of the series. I mean with all the fan interest in The Question ( which primarily has to be credited to the Justice League Unlimited cartoon series ) DC would be stupid not to capitalize on that. And it is an interesting character. The art is not bad and better than on other " event books " that have come out.

Wolverine 42 - I´m so glad I kept this book on my pull list. Now, as you may remember ( if you have read the previous posts ) I had doubts about the future of this series. Especially since the strange art in the last issue. But since the restart the stories have all been top notch as has the art. So I decided to give it a chance since it has done all right by me so far. And I wasn´t disappointed. I don´t know who this Guggenheim guy is ( or if he´s related to the famous museum ) or what he has done so far but this guy can write Wolverine like nobody´s business. He nailed the character in one issue. Just perfect characterisation.

From Wolverine anticipating the reactions of the public regarding the mutants in the whole civil war mess, to his dialogue with Luke Cage and especially Wolvie giving Luke the wake up call....that´s just Wolverine gold. The comparison between Sentinels and burning crosses was pure genius and also the hint that logan is old enough to know the results of racism during the third reich firsthand. It´s just so typical that he has to go off on his own to bring Nitro to justice. This issue has the best dialogue in a long time. Especially the last page says it all. One of the top books of the month. I can´t wait to see what happens next.

  • Wolverine 42

  • She Hulk 8 - I liked this issue much better than the last. Not only was the art by Paul Smith gorgeous like always but the story was well crafted. It just is sad that a talented writer like Dan Slott keeps getting cancelled with books like THING which was quickly becoming a favorite of mine. But more on this when I will write about issue 7 of the Thing. Like Wolverine 42 you don´t have to read this issue to understand CIVIL WAR but it fills out a small part of the bigger picture. Namely what happens now with the remaining members of the New Warriors.

It was really tragic ( and very realistic ) that the family members of the victims had learned nothing from their own loss and just were causing more death and misery. It´s a vicious circle of destruction and blaming others when all you want is revenge and basically an eye for an eye. But sometimes people are so focused on getting their revenge that they don´t realize that they have become the very thing they hate. A good issue.

Now my brother didn´t like the art by the new artist Paul Smith so I will ask him if he intends to keep the series. If not I would put it on my pull list. Before I forget to mention it I really liked the quick cameo by Captain America who has a history with Jen´s possible husband. Nice use of the character´s continuity ( see, that´s how you use it ) and a very good characterisation which helped to remind the readers that Cap has experience with wars. He´s probably the most prepared for what will soon sweep over the Marvel Universe.

Aquaman Sword of Arlantis 40 - 42 - This series did not appear on my pull list and I only bought this issues because I saw them in the comic shop and the art looked soo good. The story was interesting so far and it still has not been revealed what exactly is going on. Who is this guy ? Is he Aquaman or not ? And if not then why are there so many similarities between them ? How are they related ? Man, I just love a good mistery. I think my nose is beginning to twitch. Or does it just itch ?

Butch Guice is one of the few artists who has successfully managed the jump from my " artists who get me to cancel books " list ( back when he started on Action Comics ) to my " artists who get me to subscribe books " list. First with his excellent work on Resurrection Man ( one of DCs best series and due for his own resurrection ) and Birds of Prey and finally with his mindblowing art on RUSE, one of CrossGen´s best series.

If you haven´t checked out this series and you are a fan of Butch Guice ( or just love good detective comics ) you definitely owe it to yourself. The story was finished and you should be able to get all the issues. There are even a few trades available but you should get the single issues since almost all pges are double page spreads. And it goes without saying that the art is spectacular. Even the guest artists are such high calibre artists like Jeff Johnson or Paul Ryan.

  • Preview pages for Aquaman 42 ( and JSA 85 )

  • Secret Six 1 - The art in this one was a small shock for me after the first mini and the special. But I knew that going into the book. I´m reading this mainly for the story and wasn´t disappointed. The issue keeps playing the motif of the Secret Six as DCs Mission Impossible squad. And the depiction of the villain on the last pages were scary. Finally some writer who realizes the potential of the character. He´s really mad as a hatter. I wonder if they have found an ally now that time has run out on the secret six.

Shadowpact 1 - I don´t want to dis Bill Willingham but I had hoped that we would get the same art team for the ongoing as in the mini ( that must be the new thing to get different art teams for the sequels - it´s not like the art team has anything to do with the successs of a book ). Now I know Justiniano is busy ( I think with a new Creeper series ) but I would have prefered him on the book. Now this issue has not too much to judge the ongoing so I will not say much about that. I found it kind of strange to jump back and forth between the now and one year earlier but there may be a point to it. And the art was really good by Bill Willingham altough I always expect the main characters to get buck nekkid and get their funk on since I read Ironwood. It really has been too long since Bill did some interior work for comics. I recall the issues he did for Batman. I liked them. End of story.

And that´s all for today. May the force be with you.
