Loli loves Venom

Today I've been on some websites to download the newest solicitation pics for future posts. Afterwards I also visited ZETTGEIST a german podcast made by comic professionals about.......well, mostly anything BUT comics ( books, movies, music and stuff ) and ComicGeekos to download the newest shows so I could listen to them simultaneously. When I am downloading clips or the new solicitation pics....or writing posts like this one I like to listen to some audio.

Looking through their website I found the link to a webcomic that just piqued my curiosity. Now I don't read a lot of webcomics. Not because I don't like them....it's just that reading on a computer screen sucks. I prefer to read the printed versions like with sinfest so I pass most of the stuff. Nonetheless just reading the title I knew I had to look into it. The webcomic in question is called LOLI LOVES VENOM and yes, that basically says it all. It's about Loli who is just the most adorable, sweet and innocent blonde little girl who one day finds.....well, Venom. She decides to keep him and that's just the beginning of a catastrophe waiting to happen.

The strip by Miguel Martins ( script ) and Joana Lafuente ( artwork ) plays just brilliantly with the differences between the sweet Loli and the insane Venom.

The art is excellent and it's really funny - even if it's funny in a sick and demented way. So go and check it out I promise you won't be disappointed.

Salon del Comic de Barcelona - fanzines part 1

It's about time to get some new content on this blog and reading the last few comments it seems that I have been neglecting the comic part of this blog too much for some tastes. So I thought : let's return to the comic convention from hell ( otherwise known as the Salon del Comic de Barcelona 2008 ).

I have already told a bit about the avalanche of catastrophes that came crashing down on me. And there was more to come. Like on my last visit I decided to go to the fanzine section first. The first day is always the slowest convention day so you can check out all the booths without having to plow throug the crouds. Which means that most of the convention goers are at the big publishers so that the fanzine section resembles the badlands from Star Trek Voyager. So they are always happy when someone stops at their table and buys something. Come on, these guys are the soul of the industry.

Anyway, everybody else leaves it for the last day to spend their last bucks. But come on, that never works out. We all know it. So after getting the news that Adam Hughes was not going to appear and that the possibility of finally getting a Power Girl sketch

seemed like something out of an pre - postnuclear wasteland.....I thought : at least I can get some new cool stuff at the fanzine section. What could possibly go wrong ?

Well, to begin........I couldn't find them. They weren't at the same place they had been the year before and it took me a few hours to find them. This time they were more in the center of the convention ( last time they were right before the exit ) so that was a big plus for them but it was distracting for me. And not all of the fanzines that were representing last year had decided to return. According to the internet USTED is alive and well but they had no table and I couldn't find any copies at the dealers tables.

But what hurt even more was that SENOR K was not there. Last year I couldn't buy all the issues and I had really hoped to read more about everybody's favorite spanish nazicat.

The only magazine that I remembered from last year was RANTIFUSO. They constantly put other publications to shame ( especially if they claim to be more professional or think they are better like COMIXENE ) and they make it look easy : not only did they publish RANTIFUSO 5 since last year.....no, with a bit of effort they also managed to finish issue 6 just in time for this years convention.

And I use the word magazine instead of fanzine because with it's bookshelf format and all the pages in color they can compete with any book from big time publishers like Marvel or DC. Like most of the comics I bought in the fanzine section. I mean RANTIFUSO offers you 52 full colored pages for a measly 3 bucks - they crush the competition. You don't get a 52 pages book from Marvel or DC for 3 bucks.

Like I said, there were two issues out so I chose to buy issue 5. I had planned to buy issue 5 on the first day and issue 6 on the last day....I know. Sometimes I don't listen to my own advice. I should have known that on the last day I would forget all the important things - like buying the DEATHNOTE simulacrum. It's a deathnote notebook that comes with a real feather ( yes, the one from the animal ).

But back to rantifuso 5 ( from now on I'm going to write it in small letters because I'm a lazy bastard.....sue me ). Last year I wrote a pretty harsh review of issue 4 in part because I didn't understand some of the stories. Yes, on top of being lazy I'm stupid. In some stories I had problems with the spanish language and in others I took what was meant to be a satire as a serious story. Sometimes it's a bit hard to understand spanish humor - like the results of this year's eurovision song contest clearly showed. Viva chiki chiki !

Anyway I was rather anxious to find out how this new issue of rantifuso was going to compare to it's precedessor. Because like I had already commented in the review of issue 4 in my opinion they were just one small step from playing in the big leagues. And like last issue once you turn the really cool cover you find a plethora of the most diverse short stories.

The first one MAUI EL TRAMPOSO ( Maui the cheater ) by Bodo tells a folk story of the polynesian god Maui and how he tamed the sun. I did a bit of research and that's real polynesian mythology. The graphic part is really appealing but there are some lengths in the story. Now I don't know if that's intentional to resemble the storytelling ryhthm of old folk tales or if it's to give the big events more breathing room. For me it didn't work out. In this instance the lenght of 8 pages works against it. Like we say here in Spain : the good is twice as good if it's short. Apart from that it's a really good story. And if you want to do some research about Maui here's the wiki link :

  • Maui the cheater

  • The next story SETAS ( mushrooms ) by Juan Fender is a good example for a story that sticks to the basics. With 2 pages it tells everything it has to tell even if the end is not THE most surprising one.

What is really surprising is LA VIDA DE MIERDA ( Life of shit ) the real highlight of the book. With it's 6 pages it's one of the longer stories of this anthology and also the crowning jewel. I remember that back in the days when my brother and I were still young and naive and thought that german comic readers were clamoring for top notch stuff from german comic artists.....well, we tried to work with these guys from GERMANIA COMIC TEAM. They were really good with the press releases so we tried to work with them but the stories they wrote were always very boring like they were written for little kids. Little retarded kids that don't go out into the civilisation too much. We tried to convince them to do riskier stuff ( some of the other artist really liked our ideas ) but they just didn't see comics in that way. Anyway, their main argument was that you just can't tell a good and solid story on 8 pages.

Well, chupate esto ( like they say down here ).

Daniel Utrilla ( story ) and Samu ( art ) have created one of the best stories I have read in a long time. Without exaggeration. This one has it all : comedy, murder, poetry, suspense and a really beautiful love story. Maybe Spain and it's people have a special affinity to shit. My mother told me that during the Franco regime the people were not allowed to curse and say stuff like shit and that it was a great deal when they finally said things like shit on national television. When people down here say shit it's like a bit of personal freedom. Maybe that's the reason this is the second time ( after FIZ ) that I discover a really great comic about shit. A great story that can teach us a lesson : life's a shit but love always finds a way.

The next story O LOBISOME ( o werewolf ) by Dani and Elena ( 8 pages ) is - like the title implies - a werewolf story and a strange one at that. There was already a story in the last issue by this creative team that I didn't quite understand. Like this one. Just weird.

EL FINAL ( the end ) by Juan Ferrer seems like the opposite to me. I suppose the two pages are the last two pages of a really interesting and captivating story. But for me that's a clear waste of potential. I think it's a really perfect starting point for an excellent crime fiction story. As a reader I want to know what happened to the main character to arrive at this point in his life and what happens next. Sadly we will never know. But that just shows some real storytelling skills - to make the reader care for the characters and their story.

I also didn't like the next story HYENAS ( it's the same in english - duh ) and that's mainly because I am unaware of the context with the spanish history. What I CAN say is that I liked it much better than the last story by this creative team where at the end it's revealed to be just a bad dream. Dear comic writers : please come up with something different. Anything. The worst thing that can happen to you as a reader is that at the end of the story it turns out that it was all for nothing. Just a bad dream. Or it was just a clone. Or that they were never married and that it's not a retcon and all the stories happened...they just weren't married, okay ? Let's just ignore that kind of stories. Can we do that ? I know that this alone would improve the quality of comics....like a lot !

The next two pages present EL NINO CABRON ( something like " the asshole kid " since most spanish four letter words are impossible to translate or at least lose a lot of strength in the translation ) is another story by Samu - this time flying solo. A really witty take on Yves Saint Exupery's LITTLE PRINCE a children's book that's quite famous in Spain. You see ? I get satire - if I know it's satire. What's really strange is that in this book I like the stories that don't really shine in the art appartement. Despite the fact that I'm mainly an arts guy. Well, that just shows how important a solid story is.

And talking about solid art - that's what Y COMO SABEIS QUE ESTA MUERTO ( and how do you know it's dead ? ) offers. A short zombie story by Eduardo Ocana with a hard hitting end. I know : everybody is doing zombies. But since this isn't the newest issue ( remember : they finished issue 6 for the Salon ) it's understandable that it doesn't follow the newest trends.

A little more upbeat is EL TALLADOR DE ESTRELLAS ( the starsmith ). The fairy tale is told on two pages and combined with LA VIDA DE MIERDA this issue of rantifuso turns out to be a rather prosaic issue.

Last but not least INDIAN SUMMER by David is my second favorite story in the whole issue. The question remains if it's so good BECAUSE it's only one page or IN SPITE OF the fact that it's only one page. Aside from that it's obvious that it has fantastic storytelling because it almost impossible to come up with a surprise ending on one page. Overwhelming ! I can only say : Ole !

On the following page is a collage by Ela titled CAIDA LIBRE ( free falling ) and I'm not quite sure if it's a comic story or a work of art. And here I thought David Mack's KABUKI was hard to read. Not my cup of tea but if you are into that kind of stuff....to each his own.

Aside from that this issue has a double page spread by Monica Armino called GRUPO RANTIFUSO that would have been a wonderful wraparound cover, 2 pages of sketches and 3 alternative covers.

So what's the verdict ? In my last review I wrote that it's only a question of WHEN rantifuso is ready to play in the big leagues and not IF. It was evident that that moment was inevitable. The truth is you are never ready to make the big leap. Because you're never prepared - not really. It's sad that I forgot to buy the next issue to see if the rise in quality continues and if they could take it one step further. I'm very anxious to see the progress of this publication.

Excellent work guys ! Just continue in this direction. Here is the link to their blog if you don't want to look through all my old posts to find it. Sorry, no permanent link on the linksection but those are only for guys who put my blog on their linksection as well. I know that's hard but otherwise nobody puts links for my blog on their websites. Yes, it's hard out here for a comicpimp.

    back with a vengeance

Since my last post a few things have happened.

    First of all :

SPAIN HAS WON THE EUROPEAN SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP !!!

    Ole, ole, ole !!!

Sorry about that, normally I'm not a sportsfan and I don't watch soccer games either but it's another beast entirely for the world championship or the european championship. And especially if Spain is participating. This year's european championship has been special also because....well, usually the spanish selection has bad luck. Normally we get eliminated at the quarter finals. The last time Spain passed the quarter finals was 24 years ago. So this year I just had to watch it.

I have been supporting the spanish selection ( like all of Spain ) since the quarter finals and it just got better and better. Especially when Spain finally won the european championship after 45 years. And not only did they win but they won in such a superior manner and playing just spectacularly. They were top in all categories : they won all their games, the received the least goals, they scored most goals, they received the least cards.....etc,etc,etc....

And to top it all off there were no big shot superstars in the spanish selection. Just a good team of young professionals working together like a well oiled machine. It reminded me a bit of the last world championship where Germany was absolutely brilliant and even though they only scored third place everybody in Germany was celebrating like they had won. This championship had the same feeling of high intensity, fun and explosiveness. Another parallel is that like Juergen Klinsman the spanish coach was critisized a lot before the championship and afterwards everybody was begging him to stay. Anyway, this year the spanish selection made history and now Saint Iker and his guys are national heroes.

But enough about soccer and back to comics and what I've been up to. In my last post I wrote a bit about the problems I had......well, I wrote a bit more than what you can read on the blog but apparently my time at the internet cafe was up before I managed to post all I had written. I was still waiting for the comics I ordered from my comic shop in Germany - because I ran out of money here and since I still haven't got a job the only money I could get my hands on is the money in my bank account in Germany. While I'm writing this the comics have already arrived but I'm still waiting for an answer to my latest e - mails. It took one week to get an answer to my first e - mail, one week from my order to the order confirmation and two weeks from the day of shipping till they finally arrived here in Spain. So four weeks all in all.

I didn't get all comics I ordered and I still don't know if the comics are from my pull list or additional copies. So far I only know that I have to pay the regular price.

I also wrote in my last post that it was like the last days of earth out here in la pobla de Montornes. First of all it's pretty isolated out here and if you have ran out of reading material and all that's left to read are old copies of THE HAUNT OF FEAR you start to get weird ideas. Especially when your house is full of marrocanos who would be better of if they killed you. There are not a lot of shops out here. And to top it all of the oil prices had reached astronomical levels which lead to a truck driver strike.

So on one side you have people fighting at the gas station even though it costs a fortune. On the other side you have all truckers on strike which in turn prevents goods of all sorts to reach super markets. So they run out of stuff and people start to buy things like crazy. So in the end the super markets have more and more empty shelves. People fighting about food or the last bottle of Coke - which reminds me a bit of Peter Bagge's APOKOLYPSE NERD....which I bought at this year's Salon del Comic de Barcelona.

With which we're back to the comic part of this blog. While I was waiting for my comics to arrive I listened to my two CDs with the ComicGeekSpeak episodes ( I think I would have gone mad without them ) and I also wrote a review I'm posting in my next post. For now I've been writing long enough and I have only one hour left on the battery ( I'm writing this on our new laptop ) so that's all for today. Maybe I can finish my picture archive also. So till my next post.....remember : it's all about peace, love and comic books.

    The comic convention from hell

Somehow I didn't realize that my last post was the 150th post in this blog. Because I would have put up something better - believe me.

Well, maybe I will get the chance to make another post to celebrate it further ahead ( yeah, sure ) . Now, like promised we come to my further adventures during the Salon del Comic de Barcelona 2008 which this year celebrated it's 26th edition.

Like you might have guessed by the title of this post this year my experience was not as pleasant as the last time I attended. Maybe it's right that you can't come home again. Maybe it's the fact that you can't re - live an experience no matter how hard you might try. Maybe it's just the fact that we only focus on the good parts and forget the bad parts. It could be that I just don't remember all the bad things that happened last time ( like when I went to the presentation of the PAINKILLER JANE tv show and we couldn't watch the trailer because Jimmy Palmiotti somehow ruined the presentation disc ) and only remember the fun I had. Could be it has something to do with the fact that last time I got a beautiful WONDER WOMAN sketch from Carlos Pacheco. Be as it may this time it was like the comic convention survivor edition.

All is bad that begins bad

You know those days where you get up on the wrong side of the bed and it's all downhill from there ? My comic convention experience was something like that. Only you have to picture that instead of getting up you fall out of the bed, you forgot that you moved your bed closer to the window so that you fall out of the window - someone destroyed the fire escape so you fall directly into the dumpster ten stories below which of course is burning because someone threw toxic waste and radioactive isotopes in it. Which means that you burn to a crisp after having all your bones broken and your innards liquified. Or in the words of the immortal Subzero : Toasty.

A fact that only a few people know is that, yes, it also rains in Spain. And when it rains it pours....meaning it rains in buckets. Mostly when I'm in Spain. At the first day of the convention it was raining so that when I went out to buy some bread I fell flat on my ass....hard. I almost broke my neck and I was sore all over when I finally got up. When I arrived at the convention center it was raining even more so that you could forget to use the benches that were outside.

If you are at a comic convention for long hours ( like me ) you have to take a break from time to time to sit down and relax. That's not a problem when I'm at a comic convention in Germany because there are my Heimis ( german for homeys ) where I can sit at the table or leave my stuff. But when I'm in Spain I don't know that many people. This was only the second time so I had to look for a place to sit and relax between my comic hunting sessions.

Normally people use the benches outside for that. Since you couldn't use them this time I had to manage and use one of the few benches that were inside and are always overcrowded. Or just sit on the floor like most of the convention goers do. Anyway, the other shoe didn't take long to drop : Adam Hughes canceled his visit. I had bought a new bigger sketchbook especially to get a sketch by Adam Hughes ( one of Power Girl, please ! ) because my old sketchbook is slowly running out of pages. And you can't get up to one of your favorite artists with such a small sketchbook.

Another reason was that I was finally sick and tired. I don't know how long I'm collecting sketches in my sketchbook but if I have learned one thing it's that people with bigger sketchbooks get better sketches. Hear me now and believe me later.

If you have a small sketchbook some artists don't even try. Sad but true. And I'm just sick of waiting in line after someone who puts a giantsize sketchbook on the table and gets a painting that takes half an hour of almost cover quality only to get a quick one minute sketch before the next one gets another masterpiece. Or even worse, the artist takes so much time that the guy before you is the last one to receive a sketch. Is it just me or does the line always end right before you ? You wait for two hours and just before it's the guy's turn who's just before you the line ends. Man, I'm standing in line the same amount of time like the person before me and like the person behind me. What am I ? Chopped liver ? Dammit, I want nice sketches like everyone else.

So this time I had two sketchbooks - even if the artist for which I had bought the new one didn't come. And I even had my Adam Hughes VAMPIRELLA t shirt in my trolley.

Now this is an indispensable part of your equipment on a comic convention - especially if you are as lazy as I am. I have heard that there are some comic conventions where they don't allow trolleys but I couldn't go to any comic convention without it. Not only because I'm lazy - and it's not that I carry THAT many comic to sign. But I just can't carry all the comics I buy with me all day. I just put them in the trolley and that's that. But that's not the only thing you need the trolley for. I have everything I need during a comic convention there : a shirt to change it, a pullover if it's could, an umbrella if it's raining ( of course you don't put a wet umbrella INSIDE the trolley ), the discman, some discs, batteries, food, water and the camera.

Last year I didn't bring the camera so I couldn't take pictures of the persons dressed like comic characters - there was one especially yummy Catwoman - rowr ! I'm talking about the Halle Berry costume here. So this year I brought the camera but of course there was no Catwoman this year. There was someone dressed as Supergirl and I took quite a few pictures but I don't know how to put them on my blog. Maybe I can do a convention photo special later. Right now I have to use the pictures that were on the FICOMIC website. It's really a shame because I took a few pics of the long lines for signing which in some cases - like for Tim Sale - were enourmous. And I took one photo of the floor at the exit of the convention center just before closing time.

Because if you look at the pics here it all looks nice and clean but at the end of the convention day the floor is filled with paper waste because - like last year - they give you free comics for your entrance ticket and this year they were giving away free copies of NARUTO, BLEACH and other mangas which were all wrapped up. So of course they couldn't wait to unpack it and instead of putting the waste in the trash cans they just throw it on the floor. I don't want to talk bad about the spanish comic fans but no german comic fan would even dare to throw waste on the floor of a german convention center.

So anyway, besides of the trolley ( and the BIG sketchbook ) you also have to carry a camera. It doesn't matter if you want to take some pictures or not. The fact alone that you are visibly carrying a camera elevates you from simple convention goer to semi - professional status. I don't know if the people at the convention automatically think you belong to the press or they think you will give them a positive review in your online blog - but people sure are nicer to you. Especially if you are writing for a foreign blog that's written in english. So always carry a camera. Of course there was also a downside to that which in my case was that the camera spent the batteries really fast so I had to take them out every time I was finished with taking pictures and put them in every time I wanted to take a few quick shots. Forget about the quick part. I missed a few good pics because of that.

So that's all for today. Next time more comic convention madness from Spain.
