We all love to think about what might have happened and just can´t wait to explore the road not taken. Long before the term " butterfly effect " was known comics were exploring parallel worlds where everything was different but also the same.
And not only by DC with Earth 1, Earth 2 and Earth S. No, some of the best sagas ever written by Marvel delved into the same direction. DAYS OF FUTURE PASTS or THE AGE OF APOCALYPSE both gave us glimpses of how the Marvel Universe would have developed if things had been only a little different. And while the first one was a success from the start the second one was one of the first sagas where the readers prevailed over comic critics. Not so beloved by comic critics THE AGE OF APOCALYPSE has always been a fanfavorite that has showed so much staying power that it has been re - released just recently.
Many of the stories I read or have read ponder the possibilities of what could have been and explore this strange twilight zone between the improbable and the unavoidable. KAMANDI, EXILES, THE NAIL, SPIDER - GIRL and many of the storyarcs of SUPERMAN / BATMAN take characters we all know and love and put them into new, unfamiliar surroundings. To examine what made them what they are and how they might have turned out in other worlds.
Because the variations are endless no matter if you think about female versions, or a planet of the apes type ( which brings the monkey bonus )story, zombies, another apocalyptic deadland or a farflung future. What would have happened if Superman´s rocket would have landed on Apokolyps, russia or in the future of the Legion of Super Heroes ?
The reason why I´m even writing at such lenght about it is that just recently, while I was searching for reference material for my last post I stumbled onto a post I had done on the ELFENBEINTURM, the message board where I wrote my first semi - blog about comics many years ago. The entry was about the names I had in mind for this blog and I thought it might be interesting for my readers to find out how this blog might be called in another dimension where my counterpart opted for one of the following names :
COMICS DIED BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT A FANBOY
WHEN FANBOYS RULED THE EARTH
FANBOYS UNITED
A SPANISH COMICBLOG WRITTEN IN GERMANY IN ENGLISH
Those were the first ones that I had in mind but they all sounded too negative for me. I also thought that it would not be the best idea to have the word fanboy in the title because that would keep away the readers I was most interested in : those who think of themselves as the total opposite of fanboys but who really are.
So I thought about some other titles and after another brainstorn session I came up with the following :
IMPERIUS REX !
COMICS ARE DEAD ! LONG LIVE COMICS !
WHEN THE THUNDERSTRIKES
COMIC IS GUT FOR YOU
WHO FANS THE FANBOYS ?
IT´S MYLARTIME
FLAME WAR ON
CAPE FEAR
LIFE WILL RUIN YOUR COMICS
COMIC BLITZKRIEG
All very good choices but on top of my list were the following two titles :
FAN WITHOUT FEAR
TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN
Since the first one was almost identical to the name of a Daredevil fansite I took the second one. And the rest is history.
New to the blog ? Everything you need to know about TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN :
Who was that masked man ?
