Moon Knight Monday with Bill Sienkiewicz !

Yesterday we have some power shortages which means that the internet didn't work for quite some time but thanks to the adapter the laptop was still working. So I did what I always do in these cases : preparing for the next post and clear up the material that has accumulated while writing.

One of the pictures I had to put in the proper place was a Moon Knight pin up and when I put it in the Moon Knight folder there were already a lot of original art pieces there, at least enough for a half - assed post.

Now whoever has followed the blog over an extended period of time knows that doing things only halfway is not my modus operandi so I scoured the internet to find all the original art that is out there. One of the things that has helped me greatly in preparing for this post is that there are two omnibus now with this material which includes some very difficult to find pages like Marc Spector's appearance in Hulk magazine.

Now as for Bill Sienkiewicz I have written about him quite a lot on the blog but so far all my spotlight posts on him have been centred around THE NEW MUTANTS. And I'm sorry, maybe I am biased but for me THE NEW MUTANTS is still THE best teen superhero book Marvel comics has ever published. Straight up THE best stories by some of the best creators like Bill Sienkiewicz , Chris Claremont , Sal Buscema , Bob McLeod , Alan Davis , Steve Leialoha, Arthur Adams , Rick Leonardi , Whilce Portacio , Keith Pollard, Jackson Guice , Kyle Baker, Terry Austin , Brett Blevins , Louise Simonson and John Byrne at the height of their game and that is something that Marvel Comics has not been able to top. Especially the way they write comicbooks now. But let's give credit where credit is due because Bill Sienkiewicz did not only break the mold on NEW MUTANTS.

Long before that he made his mark on MOON KNIGHT which started out as an antagonist for WEREWOLF BY NIGHT's Jack Russell. Which is why his costume is made out of silver. A lot of people get this wrong and think it is white but it's actually supposed to be silver. Anyway, slated to be an one - off side character Moon Knight got one heck of a positive response from readers so he got more appearances - first off in other series like the aforementioned HULK magazine - before he got his own ongoing.

For a lot of people Moon Knight is Marvel Comics Batman knock - off but while he has a lot of things in common with the Dark Night Detective - playboy secret identity, another secret identity that is well known in the underworld, rich guy, using his look to scare criminals, super fancy toys, hot love interests - there are enough differences to set him apart like the egyptian mythology which makes it easier to include supernatural themes into his stories especially werewolves. One last thing I want to mention before we come to the original art for this post is that there is this misconception by the general public that Moon Knight suffers from multiple disorder mainly because that is how it was portrayed on tv.

Which I found excellent by the way. And don't get me wrong, the idea that Moon Knight has multiple personalities is something that has been used by a lot of writers in the comicbooks to great effect. But I don't think that it is one hundred percent accurate. The thing is that the mercenary Marc Spector created different personas for himself when he became a superhero like a police officer who goes undercover. They are not himself but in order for the cover to work he has to become playboy Steven Grant or cab driver Jake Lockley completely because any kind of slip up makes the difference between life and death. And as any good undercover cop who has been doing this for a long time can tell you when you are deep into a character it can be difficult for the people around you to know where the real persona ends and where the invented persona begins. Also we as persons are only as real as we ourself let us.

So for me Moon Knight is a person ( Marc Spector ) who plays different characters - which can look like he IS these people to outsiders - but he does not have different personas. Marc Spector is the real person and Steven Grant and Jake Lockley are just two persons he pretends to be when it suits ( no pun intended ) his needs. But those are just my two cents and your mileage may vary on that particular subject. Anyway, if I haven't bored you to death yet at this point let's get to the good stuff.

With that musical overture we are travelling to the world of the orient with one of my all time favourite movies, The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad starring british 42C ( ! ) - 24 - 35 bra - busting brunette Caroline Munroe.

Caroline is a cult siren deserving the title since she starred in everything from The Spy Who Loved Me to sci fi flick Starcrash to horror movies like The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again to famous Hammer productions like Dracula A. D. 1972 or Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter.

I first saw Caroline in The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad in the cinema in Kornwestheim and Caroline´s supple cleavage - which she showcased in a variety of very tight fitting outfits - was a big part of the appeal of it.

For those readers who haven´t seen this cult classic yet they can finally experience The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad or like I like to call it Diabolik vs Doctor Who since Sinbad is played by John Phillip Law who portrayed master criminal Diabolik in Danger : Diabolik ( while the videos of Mario Bava´s adaption of Italy´s most famous fumetto have all been deleted you can find a documentary on it in my José Luis García - López birthday post from 2018 and a review of the movie in my Sal Velluto birthday post also from 2018 ) and Sinbad´s nemesis, the evil wizard Koura is played by Tom Baker who portrayed the fourth incarnation of Doctor Who which is the most iconic Doctor - and the one most people remember fondly.

Speaking of Sinbad, there was the tv show The Adventures Of Sinbad that followed on the heels of Hercules : The Legendary Journeys and Xena : Warrior Princess which is not a forgotten tv show for regular visitors of the blog since I already posted four episodes. The first one ( not the first one of the series but the first one I posted which had the late Bret " The Hitman " Hart a.k.a. the best there is, the best was and the best there ever will be as a guest ) in my post with Mike Mignola's excellent covers for CLASSIC X - MEN , the second one was in my Richard Corben pre Halloween post ( since it included some pages from his NEW TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS comic ), the third one in my Ann Nocenti DAREDEVIL birthday post from 2021 ( that one also included the movie The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad but in much lower quality ) and the fourth episode in my post for a certain sexbomb I won't mention since I had to take all pictures of her out of the post to keep my blog up and running.
