Another one of the great comicbook legends has passed on and the only comfort is that John Romita at least lived to the ripe age of 93 and thus lived a full life while doing what he loved. We should all be that lucky.
Now as usual this post is late which is especially infuriating since I spent the last three days preparing everything for it so that I only need to go.
But this is not the first time one of my posts has been derailed just when I thought I had it all worked out. In this case it was the part about cult siren Kari Wuhrer in the bonus section of my DEFENDERS / Joe Sinnott post which became longer ( so I needed more pictures ) and then turned into a JUSTICE LEAGUE DETROIT feature that I could not finish Yesterday.
So I spent most of the day adding new material - like some original art by Tom Derenick or an episode of the 90s SWAMP THING tv show which also starred Kari Wuhrer - and just when I thought I could finally come to this post ( I was already wearing my AMAZING SPIDER - MAN issue 100 " The Spider - Or The Man ? " John Romita shirt in tribute ) I not only came across a lot of episodes of the aforementioned SWAMP THING tv show but also episodes of one of my guilty pleasures Acapulco H.E.A.T.
As longtime followers of the blog can attest these are very hard to come by - especially in high quality. And since I had written about that series and british 36C - 24 - 34 Busenwunder and PLAYBOY's Playmate Of The Month Of October in 1990 Alison Armitage a.k.a. Brittany York in my Steve Rude / NEXUS tribute post I spent the last few hours going through the episodes to find the breast one to include in the post, downloading the episodes before they get deleted. Which for some strange reason takes infinitely longer than usual and I am still working on that as I am writing his. I am however down to seven episodes. Okay, now it's three.
Coming back to the genesis of this post for those of you wondering why it took me three days to get ready for this, since my old picture archive is currently in digital limbo the only John Romita pictures I had were those few I found while working on other posts. Which meant that if I wanted to make a decent John Romita tribute - and the man deserves nothing less - I had to look for more of John's work, preferably original artwork.
Most of these posts evolve organically depending on what I can find on the interwebs and since most of the material I had was from his ground breaking AMAZING SPIDER - MAN run with Stan " The Man " Lee ( it is often overlooked how much his writing contributed to the success of these titles ) and that was the series from which I found the most stuff.
Of course being the perfectionist that I am I also wanted to include the covers by german publisher Williams Verlag - since that was how I first read most of the Spider - Man stories - and since I thought that all my readers outside of Germany might get a kick out of it I also threw in the covers from Bildschriftenverlag even if they did not publish all issues.
Now you might think that might be enough but I decided to add another wrinkle by including a few pages from the Bildschriftenverlag issues of DIE SPINNE and since I had the german pages I also had to include the original version. All of this would have been difficult enough under ideal circumstances but as regular blog visitors know my new laptop is built for anything except what you need to run a blog so to make things more interesting it decided to close all of the folders I was working on without warning which meant that all the previous preview pictures disappeared.
And I had to click on each picture one by one and they kept sliding back to the top of the folder which meant that I had to scroll constantly. But as you can see neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, nor laptop stays this blogger from the completion of these appointed post.
Anyway, while having not enough material before I started my research I now had to pick and choose what I would include and believe me it has not been easy. Usually I avoid material I have posted before but since this is a tribute post to a comicbook legend I invoked the statute that I can ignore that rule if the new material is of a higher quality then what I already posted. So for this post - which I suspect is just the first one of many - I went with some iconic scenes as well as my favourite moments.
Since I have already written four posts about John Romita I don't have to go into too much detail about how much I love his art or the various stories in AMAZING SPIDER - MAN and all that jazz ( no pun intended ). Been there, done that. My regulars have already read my two cents on that and new blog visitors can check out the links to the old posts that will be appearing throughout the post. And it's not like the " Spider - Man " or " Romita " tag are difficult to use. Anyway, having said that there are a few things worth adding or repeating ( since I often think I've written something before but when I look for it I can't find it so either I did not write about it or I did and just can't find it which should not surprise anybody with over 1,300 published posts all done by yours truly by himself ) and we start with AMAZING SPIDER - MAN 59 the famous issue where everybody's favourite redhead Mary Jane Watson lands her gig as a groovy go - go dancer for some shady gangster who wants to distract his customers from noticing being brainwashed by having a major sexbomb like Mary Jane dance and unleash her hypnotising gyrating hip power.
Yup, it's the classic " let's distract them with a hot babe " schtick that has worked so well for centuries. For that part I can't fault the villain in this story because why make it unnecessary complicated when you can just reach your goal by applying a sexy teenager like Mary Jane Watson ?
And I'm sure he made plenty of recordings of Mary Jane's audition to work at the adult gentlemen's striptease club for the rich and famous to review in private at a later date - just for scientific reasons of course.
Speaking of the improper use of Mary Jane - or the proper use as your mileage in these questions may vary - since Marvel characters don't age like in real life akin to Savage Dragon in Erik Larsen's superbly written and drawn SAVAGE DRAGON series ( which I never get tired of pimping ) it is very hard to pin down exactly how old they are in certain issues.
But I like to think that Mary Jane was 18 or at least a few months shy of her 18th birthday when she accepted to perform her highly suggestive dance in front of dozens of drunk or at least slightly inebriated men.
Now mind you, Mary Jane was never portrayed as the ugly duckling who gets a makeover and suddenly has a big sex appeal blowout like it is so popular in woke entertainment. And you can say what you want about Stan Lee but he was never shy about depicting the overwhelming effect Mary Jane's mesmerizing measurements had on the male populace of the Marvel universe even if it may not have been appropriate in instances.
He was after all the guy who came up with the ideas for the stories so you can bet it was Stan Lee who thought it would be a good idea to put John Romita's knack for depicting the female form - which always was sexy but classy - to good use by having Mary Jane work as a go go dancer.
And to make more sense in the story let's thrown in some gangsters who try to use her - successfully I might add - to bring various influential and powerful people under their thrall including Gwen's Dad George Stacy.
Which led to some really cringe scenes of Gwen's Dad commenting how much he enjoyed Mary Jane's dancing. Now this may be just a case of him trying to be polite and come off as hip in front of his daughter's friend but in later issues we have the continuation of this unfortunate trend by Robbie Robertson and Norman Osborn repeating the same thing.
In fact it is only due to Mary Jane's overwhelming sexual appeal that Norman Osborn's Green Goblin persona - which is tied to Norman's baser instincts like his libido - resurfaces in issue 96. So you could make the argument that is was indeed not Peter Parker but ultimately Mary Jane's boobies that got Gwen Stacy killed. Even if it was in a roundabout way.
Now another reason why I am bringing Mary Jane's job as a go go dancer - which she continued after the bad guys were caught and sent to jail - besides that is was an issue a teenaged Subzero who was not old enough to buy PLAYBOY or other adult whack off magazines enjoyed very much is to illustrate the point that it establishes the knowledge of Mary Jane being a supreme sexbomb with bonerinducing stripper skills beyond the confines of the campus Gwen Stacy and the rest of the gang went to.
Because besides the gangsters inviting the Who's Who of powerful people of the town so they can brainwash them Mary Jane worked quite a long time as a go go dancer - from issue 59 to issue 96 - and while you don't see her actual doing some dancing besides in those issues her job is referred to quite a few times even mentioning that Aunt May helped her make some of the costumes. And you had May pegged as an old prude.
Anyway, with that long period of Mary Jane shaking her moneymakers like there is no Tomorrow it stands to reason that once word of mouth got out what a natural born stripper slut she is you can bet your bottom dollar that all the horny perverts and rapists in training came from near and far to see this tittilating teenage wonder and to spank the monkey afterwards or search to release pent up sexual energy in other ways.
And I'm not implying that ultimate men milking machine Mary Jane was a promiscuous party participant who frequented every campus frat party where the horny jocks took turns slam - banging her brains out or that she was dicktamed by the entire football team in a crazy ejaculation sensation penetration sex marathon during their victory party where they used every cheerleader - as well as every big breasted female teacher who could not get away in time - like cheap blow up sex dolls.
I know that just because a girl who is built like a Playmate Of The Year that likes to dress like a prostitute likes to go to parties and have fun and who flirts with every halfway decent looking well hung athlete she comes across that does not equate with an open invitation to a double breasted deepthroat dick massage or milking guy's rock hard boner and making them squirt again and again until they can't get it up anymore.
It does not automatically mean that she was the campus slut who got sexually assaulted by all her classmates as well as the rest of the males on campus - including the teachers and the principal - on a daily basis.
The point I am making is that probably every male on campus had at least heard of this famous redhead who not only was the life of every party - on or off campus - but also now worked as a go go dancer on one of the best known joints that was frequented by the elite of the town.
You can also assume that everybody in her class knew what a stunning specimen she was. Because one would have to be blind not to notice.
Then why is there a scene in Mark Millar's " critically acclaimed " Spider - Man run for the MARVEL KNIGHTS imprint where some guys at a class reunion are not only stunned but outright shocked that Peter Parker is married to a supermodel ( of course the powers to be at Marvel - Joe Quesada - retconned that out of existence ) ? And to add insult to injury they have no idea where puny Parker found such a supreme sex machine.
Which is outright ridiculous. Dude, if you were in the same class as Peter Parker she was sitting right next to you. And you are trying to say that you never noticed this pornstar - in - training and you never thought she would later become a big supermodel and star in a famous soap opera ?
Either this is Mark Millar's ironic comment on the failures of the american education system or the guy never read a Spider - Man comic in his life.
I personally tend more to the second theory especially in light of the introduction of the absurd idea that the fights of Spider - Man against his superior foes were all part of a giant masterplan by people with political agendas to distract from the carrying out their nefarious schemes when we all know that most of them were a result of John Jonah Jameson's personal vendetta against Spider - Man. Either that or Mark Millar was predicting SJWs taking over the world which is a pretty scary thought.
But coming back to some of my favourite moments in John Romita's run on AMAZING SPIDER - MAN which involves his innate ability to draw stunning females one of them surely has to be the introduction of the Black Widow's new skin tight leather costume which may have been inspired by Diana Rigg's sexy outfit as Emma Peel on THE AVENGERS ( which was not related to the Marvel Comics book of the same title ).
Daimn, no disrespect to Scarlett Johansson but Angie Griffin ( who is one of the few female cosplayers on the planet who can give hasian blow up sex doll Yaya Han's huge 44D porn implants a run for their money with her one hundred percent all natural 46E double airbags ) is my choice for Black Widow and I bet her huge melons would turn Bucky into Fucky.
Quite literally because Disney had to sanitize it for the changed history in the MCU but in the original comicbooks Natascha Romanoff was Bucky Barnes' handler in the WINTER SOLDIER program and after he got a huge boner during a sparring session where Natascha was only wearing a g - string and pasties on her boobs ( she was hot off an undercover mission as a stripper ) she insisted on " handling " his spy sex training herself.
Her priority was to enable him to resist even the most perverted sex techniques of female agents to which she took a hands on - or rather a lips on and breasts on approach. And she was especially motivated that he passed the double breasted blowjob dick massage test by spy Ivana Suckyoudry to which end she subjected him to a deepthroat ejaculation marathon orgy making him squirt until he could not get it up anymore.
Once he graduated Sucker Cum Louder she made sure that he was well versed in all known sex techniques and could withstand all the positions of the Kama Sutra, Naranga Nanga, Joy Of Sex as well as a few dozens she had come up with on her own milking him like a breeding stallion during the insemination season until she had completely dicktamed Bucky. If the Black Widow had a body like that in the comicbooks it´s no wonder that Captain America insisted on interrogating Natty himself after she defected to the West to find out if she was still spying for the russians.
In an undisclosed motel. For a few months. Daimn, maybe it´s just me but Natasha Romanoff lost a lot of sex appeal when she stopped being a russian spy who used her special KGB sex techniques to get intel from hapless american studs with huge horsecocks. It´s the same with figure skater Katarina Witt ( and what a figure : 40C - 24 - 36 ). Ever since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany she lost a lot of her sex appeal. On the other side she did a few PLAYBOY shootings since then which we would not have gotten if she was still in East Germany.
Speaking of ultimate dicktamers I would love to " interrogate " in an undisclosed no - tell motel for a few months, Busenwunder Angie Griffin has been in a few videos as Black Widow and while we ( probably ) will never see Angie naked - at least as that character - neither are we going to see Scarlett do the full monty since she has gone on record that she will never get naked in front of the camera. Which is one of the reasons why I still haven´t seen the Black Widow movie. Not that it has to be an x - rated movie, but now that they have killed her off the only way they can make one is to go into her past. So it´s a safe bet the movie will also address her spy training which with female spies includes intensive sex training. Which could make for a few good sex scenes but taking into account Scarlet´s unwillingness to shoot any nude scenes and the SJWs stranglehold on Hollywood they will do their damndest to prevent that.
Again, not that it is the only reason to watch the movie but these kind of films can get depressing. So why suffer through all of this drama if the movie doesn´t even have a redeeming Monster´s Ball style sex scene ?
Now since we are already past the obligatory " 23 pictures per post " at this point I like to wrap things up for Today and we will continue this topic in my next John Romita tribute post with more of his iconic covers.
That said there are two covers that I have to include here since they have a special meaning for me. The first one is the cover for AMAZING SPIDER - MAN 129 what kids Today call a " key " since it has the first appearance of Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher or " Der Bestrafer " in the german translation. Which is where Robi got the inspiration for his persona of Horst Brack, der Bestrafer for german cult wrestling show Catch Up ! Shoutout to all fanatics of old school wrestling by the way.
The second one is the cover of AMAZING SPIDER - MAN issue 151 which should be no surprise for longtime followers of the blog since it was used as the cover ( although without the speech balloons ) of the second issue of DIE SPINNE by the german publisher Condor Verlag. As I have written in many previous posts - like my entry for SPIDER - MAN WEEK for John Romita Jr. - there was a gap between the time when the Williams Verlag ceased publication of all Marvel Comics titles and I got a huge surprise when I went into my usual stationary store in Neckarwyoming ( back then there were no comicbook stores ) to buy the newest issue of BATMAN SONDERHEFT, ROTER BLITZ or DAS PHANTOM and found issue 1 of DIE SPINNE. What could have been just a one off turned out to be a regular publication and issue 2 was the affirmation that Condor Comics was here to stay and since they were so far behind DIE SPINNE came out twice a month. I even had this cover as a t shirt but somewhere in the shuffle of moving to Spain I lost it and I have not been able to find a replacement.
Oops, I almost forgot about the links to my previous posts with John Romita since they did not come up during the main part as I thought.
Well, better late than never so the newer visitors of the blog - as well as regular readers who want to refresh their memory - should start with my first post for John Romita where I pimped the big MARVEL VISIONARIES hardcover that was available for a measly ten bucks. I hope some of my followers took the opportunity to get it since it is out of print now and you pay the same price for the new softcover edition as what you paid for the oversized hardcover back then. Which I predicted would happen.
Next up we had a FIGHT NIGHT special with the full issues 108 and 109 and we will come back to the second issue because for one I found some original art pages in better quality but also because I want to show the difference between the original colouring with its subdued subtle hues and in - between tones and the re - colouring with its grell Technicolor.
They say the third time's the charm and my third John Romita tribute post really had a charm of its own since it contained a lot of pages - not all of them - from SPIDER - MAN ANNUAL 16 which was a collaboration with son John Romita Jr. that introduced MY female version of Captain Mar - Vell : Monica Rambeau, a confident black woman who kicked ass without being an emotionless " strong female character " who eventually even became the leader of the world's mightiest heroes, the Avengers.
My last John Romita birthday post was his entry for SPIDER - MAN WEEK in 2018 which contained a lot of original art, some of which you will see again in future posts because I found new versions in better quality or because I am going to combine the art with pages from DIE SPINNE.

One of Peter Parker's first crushes / girlfriends who doesn't get a lot of play nowadays is Daily Bugle secretary Betty Brant.
