So there I was trying to finish my MAKE MINE MARVEL post and adding all this material about The Planet Of The Apes to the cult siren / pop culture section because I thought I didn´t have enough good stuff for a spotlight post. Well, just to satisfy my curiosity I decided to check out my picture archive and lo and behold I DO have enough good material for a spotlight.
More than one, in fact there is enough material for at least a second post.
It won´t come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the blog for an extended period of time that the main focus of this spotlight post are the comicbooks and especially the ones published by Marvel Comics - although there is some art from other comicbook publishers. Speaking of art, I´ve included a lot of original comicbook art but since some of it is from Marvel Comic´s black and white magazine there are no corresponding color pages.
And now, without any further ado let us be about our monkey business.
This is the video that started this whole post which is kind of ironic since it is not about the original THE PLANET OF THE APES series by Marvel Comics but the UK reprints of that material. Nice collection though.
Ever since I had to let go of my entire comicbook collection I have not kept up with new releases as much as I used to. Plus going through various lockdowns and living at the fringes of modern society doesn´t help much in regards to stay in the loop. On top of that it has been ages since I set foot in a comicbook store so if it wasn´t for writing posts I might never even heard of the PLANET OF THE APES / GREEN LANTERN crossover.
The following video is really just a brief history, going over all the movies that have come out very quickly without going into much detail or trying to figure out where every film fits into the chronological order. It does however mention the cartoon and tv show plus a lot of other THE PLANET OF THE APES paraphernalia items from comicbooks to merchandise stuff.
Thankfully we have another episode of Ayer Nomas which examines the sadly short - lived ( only 13 episodes were produced ) THE PLANET OF THE APES tv show starring Roddy McDowall and Marc Lenard more in detail.
Apropos the tv show, I had to re - upload this episode which is why I also added a random episode with the spanish dubbing. So that if one of them gets deleted we still have the other one. At least that´s what I hope for.
I have also included some episodes from the PLANET OF THE APES cartoon show in previous posts but just for completists sake I am including one.
And we also could not end this post without at least one adaption of THE PLANET OF THE APES by famous cult audio book company Power Records .
I was a bit hesitant to include this video because while it gives you an interesting look behind the scenes and explains a lot of things it also has a huge spoiler for all those people who still have not seen the original THE PLANET OF THE APES movie series. What is no spoiler is that while I could have ended the post here I decided to add a few more things since we all have a bit more time on our hands thanks to the pandemic. From a superhero movie that is based on an actual comicbook we come to one who is not with 1980´s Captain Avenger - Hero At Large starring the late John Ritter who plays a down on his luck actor who is hired to dress up as the ficticious superhero Captain Avenger to promote a movie and gains a great deal of notoriety when he foils a robbery - still in costume.
John Ritter may be best remembered as the Dad in the Problem Child movies and playing the main lead in Hooperman but he was one lucky dude where hot female co - tars were concerned. Sorry for the long avalanche of The Fall Guy episodes with Markie Post in a bikini but with the way things are going on YouTube I wanted to make sure I had enough spares in case one or two of them get taken down. Going on from Hero At Large to Hero High I am not sure if I have never seen this cartoon or if I HAVE actually seen an episode and just forgotten about it.

Speaking of forgotten cartoon shows, in keeping with the theme of animals behaving like humans we have another episode of Forgotten Television and this one is all about Mattel´s 1997 Extreme Dinosaurs.
Inside the realm of comics the best known, most beloved and critically acclaimed riff on THE PLANET OF THE APES is of course Jack Kirby´s KAMANDI - THE LAST BOY ON EARTH. I was thinking about getting the omnibus for my new comicbook collection since it was offered at amazon at a pretty reasonable price but since I have already read it - although only in the spanish translation - and I didn´t deem it essential for my collection I didn´t grab the chance. Now it has gone up in price and since we will move into a new house - again - pretty soon this one will have to wait.
Apropos apes, Brandon Tenold´s cult movie review of the King Kong knock - off Mighty Peking Man was supposed to be a double feature but the film I had embedded was deleted and the only replacement I found has an age restriction. So you can watch the full movie on YouTube - if you still want to that is after seeing the review - but I just can´t include it in this post.

Frequent blog visitors might have noticed that the Don Camillo And Peppone movie I originally posted has vanished but what can I say but " C´ est la YouTube, c´est la guerre. " and soldier on ? I do however think that My Man Godfrey from 1936 starring William Powell ( whom you may know from the THIN MAN movies with Myrna Loy ) and Carole Lombard ( who was his ex - wife during the time of filming ) is an adequate substitute for it especially since the movie includes some serious social commentary.
