Our next story, A FIRE IN THE NIGHT from CLASSIC X - MEN 12 is another spotlight episode, this time giving us more background on Mageto. Which would be another reason why people would be interested in this book IF some writer at Marvel would not have had the brilliant idea to do away with all of the decade long continuity that Magneto´s name was Magnus Lensherr and that he was the father of Pietro Maximoff a.k.a. Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch . I am not sure why they picked this particular story since they probably could have gone with any of the back ups in this series although it has some nice art by John Bolton.
There has been a CLASSIC X - MEN omnibus hardcover that collects all the additional material of this particular reprint series but since I already wrote about that at length in my latest MIKE MIGNOLA appreciation post ( and I don´t have any art for this part ) let´s just get to the next story.
Which is another back up story, this time from UNCANNY X - MEN ANNUAL 12. The art is by Arthur Adams who did a lot of X - MEN related specials and series ( like the one that introduced LONGSHOT who became one of the breakout members of the team and about which I wrote in this post ) so he had to appear in some shape or form in this book. Besides from some stunning Arthur Adams art the story also has the first appearance of the X - Babies and I was almost tempted to say that they haven´t made their way to the movies yet but for a few years now the characters in the Marvel movies have been getting younger and younger. So who knows ?
The X - Babies may have already taken over without anybody noticing.
Speaking of artists who have contributed to a lot of specials and X - Men related projects, our next story is WARLORD from EXCALIBUR 16, one of the highlights of this book - at least in my humble opinion - and one of the deciding factors for me to spend my money on this printed collection.
Some readers may already be tired of me talking about how underrated this series is so I will just put up a link to my latest EXCALIBUR spotlight .
I must however mention that when I bought this book the Epic Collections were not happening yet so any chance to get at least one or two issues of this series which was clearly ahead of its times - especially in hardcover format - was very rare. There had been some out of print trades so I can only guess why they chose this particular story but I seem to recall that it was a favorite of Chris Claremont as well as Alan Davis . And what better way to introduce new readers to the crazy, funny and heart wrenching adventures of the team than the world´s greatest Errol Flynn fan Kurt Wagner a.k.a. Nightcrawler going all John Carter on some alien planet.
Because while a lot of people thought that this was a riff on DC´s mega successful series WARLORD by Mike Grell ( and you have a bit of that in the costumes the girls wear ) it is obviously more based on TARZAN creator Edgar Rice Burroughs JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS series.
About which Marvel also did a series. Yes, I know there has been a Disney movie but let´s forget that censored for more family friendliness film.
We have another fan favorite story with MADRIPOOR KNIGHTS which brings us - as the cover blurb boasts - Wolverine, Captain America and the Black Widow together again for the first time. Chris Claremont has always been a big fan of retroactive continuity ( or retcons for short ) throughout his career ... heck, CLASSIC X - MEN had loads of it and X - MEN : FOREVER was nothing but retcons. So it should surprise nobody that he could not resist to incorporate these characters in a shared continuity. What makes this story so enjoyable is that you not only have Chris Claremont at the peak of his powers but also Jim Lee whose pictures were just bursting with energy. And that´s not just me talking, they made a special Jim Lee portfolio book with various splash pages from UNCANNY X - MEN including this niece piece from issue 268 featuring the real deal, true blue, accept no cheap substitutes, pre Hydra agent, sentinel of liberty Steve Rogers.
Since this is such a beloved issue by fans and pros alike there are also quite a few homages to Jim Lee´s cover for UNCANNY X - MEN 268.
And that wraps up our post. There is one final story, THIS ONE´S FOR YOU ! from X - MEN UNLIMITED 36 but I think this was mainly chosen because of the story about Kitty Pryde and her father than for the art by paisano Salvador Larocca. Don´t get me wrong, he has done some exceptional issues - especially in the STAR WARS : VADER DOWN book - but not here.
I could write about Chris Claremont ad nauseum - and I have already done so on several occasions - and he will probably pop up in some future posts since he wrote some of the issues included in the MARVEL UNIVERSE BY JOHN BYRNE VOLUME 2 omnibus hardcover I bought for the ridiculous price of 28 bucks ( I got three omnibus books, two Epic Collections and one King - sized Jack Kirby hardcover for a really low price but before I could write a post about it the sale was already over ). But the main focus of this post is to list all the stories from the MARVEL VISIONARIES : CHRIS CLAREMONT book so you can decide for yourself if it´s something for your collection. If you can find it be sure to buy the hardcover over the trade.
Since we already had the links for this topic in part one we continue with the list of celebrity birthdays .... well, not where we left off because I already covered the anniversaries for November the 18th in my RETURN OF PAUL RYAN FLASH FRIDAY : TRIAL RUN post from 2016 and there is nothing urgent I have to add at the moment. So we pick up the pace with a really big one as Bo - dacious Derek celebrated her 63rd birthday on the 20th of November. She appeared in a few movies when I was a teenager but the one that really put her on the map and forever cast her as the true gold standard of bodily perfection all other women strove for was of course " 10 " the comedy with Dudley Moore in which she played - well, a perfect 10 .
I don´t know how common it was to rate women on a scale from 1 to 10 before the movie but afterwards ALL men were doing it. Only from that moment on 10 meant Bo Derek. Now you might not think that there are many connections between perfect 10 Bo Derek and comicbooks and least of all Chris Claremont´s mutant universe but she almost starred in a Dazzler movie as Alison Blaire which was nixxed because of the financial desasters Bolero and Tarzan by her husband and director John Derek. And no matter what the story of the movie would have been or the film´s quality getting to see Bo Derek in a silver bodysuit alone would have been worth the price of admission.
On November the 22nd, another perfect 10 turned 60, MILF Jamie Lee Curtis. I was lucky enough to watch the complete series when it was shown in Germany by arte ( which is usually where they show all the good stuff because it´s a tv station operated by the french and financed by the germans ) and it´s creepy how much ahead of its time the series was.
And we are staying with cult tv shows with an episode of Musikladen.
I don´t like to end posts on a down note and I tried to find a comedy or at least a horror comedy but the only one I could find was Saturday The 14th and that movie is more silly than funny. At least Tourist Trap has some hot babes including Tanya Roberts even though it is not a very funny movie.
