After a week of working on my Rob Liefeld NEW MUTANTS / X - FORCE tribute post it is time to take a break so we are returning to one of my favourite series in the entire Marvel Comics mutant universe, the sadly very underrated and underappreciated EXCALIBUR written by Chris Claremont - of course - and drawn by the incomparable Alan Davis .
At least during Alan Davis first tenure on the book, later on Alan Davis assumed the writing duties and that would have been our starting point for this post but - as usual - while doing the research I came upon a few pages of original Alan Davis artwork that should have been included in my first two posts of this series AFTER finishing that part of the post.
Now the reason why I mentioned my Rob Liefeld spotlight is that like so many other posts the genesis of this one lies in a previous post. While writing the post I - naturally - mentioned EXCALIBUR as one of the many mutant - centric comicbooks Chris Claremont wrote during his 16 ( !!! ) year tenure on UNCANNY X - MEN and while looking for an original Alan Davis EXCALIBUR page to add to the post I realized how many pages I still hadn't posted. Well, if you have read the Rob Liefeld post you know that I did not include a page from EXCALIBUR ( which probably would have sold 100 times as much if they would have called the series X - CALIBUR ) because I decided to save those pages to continue this series. And since I have - almost - checked all the necessary boxes for the videos which I include in the comicbook trivia / cult siren section plus extras ( like the full movie BEVERLY HILLS COP although I reckon it won't last long ) on the Rob Liefeld post I thought why not continue the mutant motif a bit and see if we can't turn November into a full blown MUTANT MONTH.
As longtime followers of the blog know my two previous posts are not the first posts I did on EXCALIBUR. I already did three posts on the series - as well as two more about some of the other books he did - but since I had lost my entire picture archive ( twice ! ) and I came across a lot of pages by Alan Davis from EXCALIBUR I decided to start again from zero.
Also back then I used a lot of pages with a very low quality which would not make the cut Today so that even if I reposted a page the new version has a superior quality which for me counts as posting a brand new page.
Going over my old EXCALIBUR posts I thought I had already written a bit about the background of the characters but I could not find anything.
Of course it is possible that I wrote something to that extend on another post but I don't have the time to go over all of my almost 1,425 posts so here we go. Most people know all the better known mutant characters which Chris Claremont pulled from the X - Men books like Kitty Pryde or Nightcrawler but I bet not that many are familiar with Captain Britain.
Or if they are familiar with him it is mostly from the newer comicbooks and are unaware that he did not start out in regular Marvel Comics but in the english branch, Marvel UK. Established in 1972 it offered reprints of Marvel Comics titles - with most of the colours removed - in magazine sized publications like The Mighty World Of Marvel. But these books did not make a big impression on the british market which was dominated by titles like Judge Dredd, 2000 AD or Vulcan which included series like The Spider, The Steel Claw , Kelly's Eye, Mytek The Mighty, Robot Archie or The Rise And Fall Of The Trigan Empire which german comic fans would discover through the Kobra comicbooks. To change that Marvel Comics decided that they needed a british super hero as the lead of a new series and Londonborn Chris Claremont was tasked with writing it. He came up with the character, his story and the supporting cast and Herb Trimpe - best known for his iconic run on THE INCREDIBLE HULK where he co - created Wolverine with Len Wein - was the artist on this new series.
As for his design I could not find a definite answer to who came up with it but various sources speculate that it was probably John Romita Senior.
Chris Claremont wrote ten instalments of the lead feature in Captain Britain - which had a length of 8 pages - and regular blog visitors might remember that they are included - amongst a plethora of other material - in the MARVEL UNIVERSE BY CHRIS CLAREMONT omnibus since I wrote a post about it ( which includes the full list of contents ) in May of 2023 because amazon Spain was offering the 140 EURO hardcover for a measly 53 bucks. And as usual I've only had time to read the first five chapters.
Now in the beginning Captain Britain was just your run of the mill super hero and I first became more acquainted with Brian Braddock in reverse order. Because back in the day there were very few trade paperbacks around but one of the few that was omnipresent - and not too expensive - was the CAPTAIN BRITAIN trade paperback that collected the stories from the british comics written by Alan Moore and drawn by Alan Davis that led up to the creation of EXCALIBUR. Which was not the beginning of their collaboration where they completely redesigned the costume to its iconic new iteration. For that we had to wait a few decades as Marvel Comics first reprinted those in a limited series and they are included in the CAPTAIN BRITAIN omnibus that also contains the initial 39 issue run.
But you don't have to wait any longer because I think that's enough of an introduction to Captain Britain. Since we covered the material from the original graphic novel EXCALIBUR - THE SWORD IS DRAWN as well as from issues 1 to 5 of the ongoing series in our first post and issues 6 to 24 ( which includes EXCALIBUR's crossover with INFERNO and THE CROSS - TIME CAPER ) in our second post we have already covered Alan Davis' first tenure on the book. So in this start we start with Alan Davis return to the title with issue 42 as he also took over the writing of the title.
