TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN: Don't mind me I'll wait for the next omnibus

Now in my Bronze Age DC Comics horror anthology post I wrote about the skyrocketing prices for the Artist Editions so I want to continue that topic and wax philosophic about what is going on with the omnibus editions.

Since their inception these books have become more and more expensive but since it has happened in two waves it didn't feel as exaggerated. I don't know if everybody remembers the time before the birth of the omnibus but when the first ones were printed the price range on these books was between 75 and 100 bucks with delving into the 125 price range in only a few cases. From the beginning I have been saying that these books were very overpriced and for the most part that was true.

Longtime followers of the blog already know this but my rule of thumb about hardcovers is page count divided by ten equals price tag which means that if an omnibus book has over 1,000 pages a price tag of 100 EUROS is justified but when it has only 700 pages it should not cost more than 70. And there were a lot of omnibus with a low page count like 650 or 750 pages that went for 100 EUROS. Of course there were also some that had around 700 pages and were sold at 70 scheckels but for most of my omnibus I waited for a discount since the regular price was too high.

As regular visitors know I have only paid the full price on the SECRET WARS II omnibus because it is one of my favourite crossovers of all times and since it was out of print everywhere else - and it has a page count of more than 1,000 pages - I didn't mind paying the full price of 100 EUROS.

Of course I had to sell it ( and I hope it has found a good home ) but that's besides the point. Like with everything else once these books started catching on with readers - in big part because it was relatively easy to find them with an adequate discount that resembled more their actual value - prices started going up and they printed more of them.

While in the beginning they only did these for the most iconic stories suddenly you had omnibus books for such stinkers like ATLANTIS ATTACKS and even the worst Avengers story ever AVENGERS : THE CROSSING. Like I said, the price increase happened in two waves but I think you could argue it was really three although the second one could be chalked up to regular market practices which in itself is depressing enough. The first wave of the increase was that the page count was seriously bumped up and most of the omnibus that were printed had a page count of around 1,000 pages selling for 100 bucks but slowly going over the 125 margin.

Which sounds reasonable, right ? If you apply my rule of thumb then 100 rubels is where you are at and 125 EUROS is not that far away especially when you keep in mind that you could probably find it for less than 100.

The next price increase happened almost unnoticed although I already alerted my readers to the fact that when comic companies reprinted old omnibus editions they mostly did it because they had realized that they sold them too cheap and this way they could demand more money for the same page count. The third wave was that the regular price for the omnibus became 125 bucks with the page count going over 1,250 pages in some cases but also dropping below 800 or 700 in a lot of instances.

In some cases that was explained by the material being very old and needing a lot of restauration - like in the omnibus of HOUSE OF MYSTERY or HOUSE OF SECRETS - or because of having to pay for the rights to use certain characters under copyright law like with SHANG - CHI , MASTER OF KUNG FU by Doug Moench , Paul Gulacy , Mike Zeck and Gene Day .

And now we are at a point where the prices for omnibus have exploded and they get more and more expensive every time. Since our last post was a Legion of Super - Heroes post I looked up those omnibus first but of the Silver Age only volumes 1 and 3 are currently available in Spain.

These books used to be available at the lower level prices between 60 and 80 bucks and right now the first one still is - going for 55 EUROS with a page count of above 650 pages - but volume two is listed for the just ridiculous price of 125 EUROS with a page count of also above 650 pages.

If I look them up on one of my online comic shops volume two is also out of print and they both cost 100 EUROS. There is also the first volume of the FIVE YEARS LATER omnibus - which I was fortunate enough to get when it was offered with a discount - that has an amazon price of 290 EUROS at a page count of 1,400 plus pages and the second volume which I still haven't bought. On one side because I really should not and on the other side because they still want 100 EUROS for it which is justified with a page count of 1,300 plus pages but I am still waiting if it does not get below that. Although the regular in store price is almost 160 EUROS.

Since I already mentioned DC Comics Bronze Age horror anthologies like the aforementioned HOUSE OF MYSTERY and HOUSE OF SECRETS I also wanted to take a look at that. Those that frequent this little blog on a frequent basis know that I got an omnibus from each of those series when they had a smaller price tag since that happens seldomly enough.

Again, looking at amazon these prices are always fluctuating - which is why I have them in my cart although I don't plan on getting them without a hefty discount - and right now one of the books I bought is at 135 EUROS and the other at 140 EUROS so I guess I made the right decision.

Volume 1 of THE HOUSE OF SECRETS is at 85 ( page count 850 plus pages ) while the second volume is at 300 bucks ( page count 850 plus pages ) and volume 3 at 110. At my online comic shop the first volume of HOUSE OF MYSTERY sells at 105 EUROS ( page count almost 800 pages ) while volumes two ( 840 pages ) and three ( over 900 pages ) have a price tag of 160 EUROS and the HOUSE OF SECRETS books go for 130 EUROS each.

So there are still a few instances of omnibus books you can get at a good price and I want to mention two you might want to keep an eye out for.

The first one is volume one of AVENGERS BY KURT BUSIEK AND GEORGE PEREZ and anyone who has been reading this blog for more than a few months knows how much I like these stories. I used to have the regular five volume hardcover set of this - which took me quite some time to hunt down - although I already had all the single issues and I was still tempted to get the first editions of the omnibus books when they came out with a price tag of 125 EUROS. Remember when I said back then that when Marvel Comics reprints this material it will be even more expensive ? Well, the new edition has an in store price of 130 EUROS for less than 1,200 pages and an amazon price of 140 EUROS. The reason why I am bringing it up is that the current price at amazon Spain is 90 EUROS which would still be a good price with the old 125 price tag. Now it's an even better price so you might want to keep that omnibus on your radar.

The second omnibus I want to mention is the MARVEL UNIVERSE BY CHRIS CLAREMONT and since it is one of those sampler omnibus it might not be for everyone. The reason why I still think I need to address this is that it has a regular price of 140 EUROS while it is currently listed at amazon for 53 EUROS. Which is way below half price for a 1,100 plus pages book.

When I came back to Spain more than two years ago it was at 45 EUROS but since I was not too sure if I really needed it I waited too long and now is the first time that it has been anywhere near that price range.

Now as I mentioned in previous posts these sampler books are not for everyone since most people prefer omnibus books that are centered around certain stories to those that collect the work of certain creators.

In this case it is really Chris Claremont's lesser know work so what does it collect ? First up we have seven issues of WAR IS HELL with art by Dick Ayers, Don Perlin, Herb Trimpe and George Evans followed by four issues of BLACK GOLIATH by George Tuska and Vince Coletta , Rich Buckler and Don Heck and last but not least Keith Pollard. Next up we have the first ten issues of the original CAPTAIN BRITAIN series. Most are familiar with the version by Alan Moore and Alan Davis but this is the original version and the art in these UK issues was done by Herb Trimpe and Fred Kida.

Going on we have the first piece de resistance in this volume with issues 38 to 45 of DOCTOR STRANGE by the great late Gene Colan . I used to have this as part of an MARVEL MASTERWORKS : DOCTOR STRANGE and while Dan Green is not as apt at inking Gene Colan as Tom Palmer was on TOMB OF DRACULA it is always good to see Gene Colan's iconic pencils.

This part is accompanied by issues 4 to 8 and issues 10 to 11 of MAN - THING because there is a crossover in here with Doctor Strange and the art in this portion was done by Don Perlin, Val Mayerik and Bob Wiacek.

Next up we have what may be one of the best stories in the FANTASTIC FOUR and the X - MEN's respective universe FANTASTIC FOUR VS X - MEN with art by Jon Bogdanove and Terry Austin . I feel this is a somewhat underrated and undeservedly so but it also has been reprinted numerous times so if your comicbook collection is as vast as mine used to be you might already have this. Going on we have CONTEST OF THE CHAMPIONS but not the iconic one by John Romita Jr but the second series. Which is nothing to sneeze at either since it has art by mi paisano Oscar Jimenez.

Rounding up the book we have five issues of MEKANIX a series I never heard of drawn by Juan Bobillo and I think it was only included because it features Kitty Pryde. Somebody people claim she is Chris Claremont's favourite X - babe but I'm pretty sure that spot is reserved for Psylocke .

The book also collects the five issues of the first BIG HERO 6 series with art by David Nakayama and if you know the animated version by Disney - this team is nothing like that. Finally we have material from X - MEN UNLIMITED issue 36, namely the Kitty Pryde story This One's For You ! with art by fellow paisano Salvador Larocca. So what's the final verdict ?

Like I said, this omnibus is probably not for everyone. The main target audience here are fans of Chris Claremont who want to discover some of his work outside of the mutant universe and it might help if you are into Marvel Comics Bronze Age artists like Herb Trimpe, the double dragon combo of Don Heck and Don Perlin, George Tuska, Vince Coletta and a bit of Gene Colan magic. If that sounds like your cup of tea this might be a nice addition to your collection especially with a very low price like 57 EUROS. Or less if you want to wait a little longer but don't wait too long.

Today we take a closer look at number 15 from that list, none other than second generation wrestler Dustin Rhodes a.k.a. Now I have been thinking about casting Jair in a comicbook movie and apart from the usual suspects I realized that she would be perfect as Vicky Spritzfest ( Fucktoria Squirthard in the english translation ) the Busenwunder reporter for Notzucht TV that would have been introduced in the third issue of my discontinued adult comicbook series VERSAUTE BETTGESCHICHTEN. Granted, in the comic Vicky is white and not black but I think Jair definitely has the long legs to pull it off and I don't think people would mind it much that her huge boobs are bigger than Vicky's.

Vicky is a plucky reporter with a body made for porn movies - which is why Jair would be perfect for this - who drives all men around her crazy.

Especially her perverted camera guy who is a rapist - in - training that " initiated " Vicky after her first live report by hiding in her motel room and using her as his sex doll for the rest of the night. Even if she doesn't win, the five finalists at least get a money prize and are featured in a naked PLAYBOY pictorial ( which should tell you when this story was written ). So she wins the poll by a landslide because everybody wants to see her bucknaked in PLAYBOY.

During the contest Vicky uses her natural born sluttiness and her superior stripper skills that she used to work her way through college to win over the crowd and apart from one little slip up - which she manages to turn into a bonerinducing stripper move - everything works out for the breast.

I don't think I would have let her win the contest - as good as she is Sandra's boobs just eclipse her and Sandra also gets her clothes totally ripped off by the crowd as her performance almost turns into an orgy.

I think the way I would have gone is that Vicky wins sixth place - which means that she will not get naked for PLAYBOY magazine - but at the last minute the second place winner is disqualified because she is only 16 ( she does have giant tits which makes it believable everybody thought she was of legal age ) and Vicky has to strip naked for PLAYBOY after all.

Now as an incentive to get as many people as possible to vote for Vicky to enter the wet t - shirt contest the tv station manager offered five prices which I think could also be used for Jair be it as punishments for losing in React videos or as incentives for premium channel members.

The fifth prize would have been a meet & greet with Vicky - in a tiny micro bikini - and the participation in a two hour bodypainting class with Vicky as the canvas where the lucky winner gets to apply the paint with his hands and help Vicky to get clean afterwards as he uses his rockhard boner to make sure those hard to reach places get enough showering gel.

The fourth prize would have been a visit to Vicky's shooting for PLAYBOY magazine to experience her spreading her insanely long legs better than a phillipino hooker first hand. Who naturally is not too thrilled about it but because she is already drilled hard by two guys her protests fall on deaf ears.
