I know, you probably expected a LEAVE IT TO CHANCE spin - off post but while I DO have enough material for such a post I have said all there is to say about the subject at this moment and I fear that if I do one in spite of that the quality would suffer. I also thought about doing a Doctor Strange post because Paul Smith has done quite the acclaimed run on that title but I just started a Doctor Strange post with Gene Colan's iconic contribution to that comicbook and I don't want to repeat myself.
At least not that fast. I also considered going in a completely different direction with a post that's more in tune with Halloween with a Ghost Rider post but I thought we can all use a break from the creepy stuff.
And in any case I'm sure we will have enough horror stuff in this post's pop culture section to keep the most hardcore Hammer Studio fanatic satisfied. No, for Today we are going with Paul Smith's UNCANNY X - MEN.
Now when I said that it's underrated I don't mean in connection with Paul Smith's ouvre since it is one of the things he's known for. What I mean is that as far as the X - Men runs go it doesn't get much play and is never discussed in much detail. Heck, when I started buying the UNCANNY X - MEN MARVEL MASTERWORKS I started after his run when John Romita Jr became the regular penciler of the book. Because John is one of my favorite artists and these books demand quite the hefty price ( even if you get them with a discount as I did ). And because those are some of my favorite stories that I can just read again and again. They are also some of the few books I managed to keep from my comic collection.
I wanted to post some pictures to give you an idea how tiny my comic collection - if you can even call it a collection anymore - has become but despite spending half an hour making pictures with my mobile phone the damn thing apparently didn't take any pictures. Well, we'll just have to do it some other day. The point I was trying to make is that while the runs of such high calibre artists like Dave Cockrum , John Byrne , John Romita Jr , Marc Silvestri or Jim Lee are the subjects of many articles and essays Paul Smith's run is hardly mentioned. And not only is it one of the best looking runs there are also a lot of significant things happening during his time on the book. We start off with the second part of the X - Men's second encounter with the brood and Storm almost turning into a brood, Kitty Pryde finding the soulmate she never knew she was missing with her pet dragon Lockheed, the original Miss Marvel getting turned into her Binary persona and joining up with the Starjammer crew, Kitty Pryde also leaving the team and being forced to join the New Mutants, the introduction of Madelyne Pryor, Storm becoming the leader of the Morlocks by mortal combat and changing her look to the punk leather outfit with mohawk and all, Wolverine and Mariko Yashida's wedding being called off, Mastermind using his powers to make Scott Summers believe that Madelyne Prior is the reincarnation of Jean Grey to get his revenge on Cyclops and dead Jean Grey culminating with their wedding.
Add to that the other X - MEN related books Paul Smith has worked on like the X - MEN AND ALPHA FLIGHT crossover and he has had quite an impact on Marvel Comics merry band of mutants, don't you think ?

Reed has an article over at COMICS ALLIANCE celebrating the art and career of John Romita Jr while Mark Ginocchio lists John Romita Jr's 10 Greatest Creative Runs on the aptly named COMICBOOK website and those who have missed it might want to check out my Marc Silvestri X - MEN post from 2020 which has more stuff about Madelyne Pryor and especially her Goblin Queen persona since the whole Madelyne Pryor storyline reached its culmination in the INFERNO crossover ( which is one of my favorite X - Men crossovers of all time ) during Marc Silvestri's tenure on the book .
Now while writing the Marc Silvestri post I came upon some mindblowing pictures of ravishing 35D - 24 - 36 redhead Ashlynne Dae cosplaying as the Goblin Queen that you really have to see to believe. CHILLS, THRILLS, KILLS, SPIES, BOND GIRLS AND HAUNTED HOUSES !
We come to a different kind of horror with Chillers, a tv series from 1990 that was based on the novels by Patricia Highsmith and presented by Anthony Perkins best known for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Who by the way did not appear in the failed Bates Motel pilot from 1987 that I wrote about in my recent Halloween tribute post to EC Comics Al Feldstein .
Anyway, the first episode called Slowly Slowly In The Wind boasts among its cast blonde 33B - 23 - 34 bikini body Maryam D'Abo who appeared in such movies like White Nights although she is best known for her role of Kara Milovy in the James Bond movie The Living Daylights which had a title song by A - ha that was pretty successful in the 90s single charts.

Coming back to X - MEN related things we have a callback even further than the Paul Smith X - Men run - although it had repercussions to it - with the 90s X - Men cartoon which so far has been the best adaptation of Chris Claremont and John Byrne's groundbreaking Dark Phoenix Saga.
Now for me there are two main reasons why Hollywood constantly fails at doing this story justice. First they want to reap the rewards without putting in the work which means that they always try to do The Dark Phoenix Saga without doing The Phoenix Saga first. And you can't have the same emotional impact if you ignore an essential part of the story.
The second problem is that they focus too much on Wolverine and while I am a big fan of Logan The Dark Phoenix Saga is not a story about Logan, it's a story about Jean Grey and Scott Summers. Best summarized in the words Once upon a time, there was a woman named Jean Grey, a man named Scott Summers. They were young, they were in love. They were heroes. So IF you focus on Logan and tell the stories from his perspective Cyclops is going to be this annoying bland milksop that gets in the way of doing the horizontal limbo with Jean instead of portraying him as one of the best if not THE best X - Man of all times. And my personal favorite.

Now this is not exactly a reader friendly comic that serves as an entry point for new readers but with dozens of mutant tittles out there a lot of people are afraid to dive into the deep end or don't know where to start.
But comicbooks are not the only mass medium with a convoluted history especially when it comes to a shared universe. Because before there was Marvel's cinematic universe where movies and heroes overlapped there were the various cartoon shows faturing Marvel Comics characters and here we have an attempt to figure out how exactly they all fit together.
Since I could not find any episodes of Marvel Comics cartoon shows in spanish we have a callback to House II with an episode of Bravestarr.
Yep, that's right the whole western theme in this pop culture trivia section didn't start with West And Soda because House II is basically a wild west ghost story. From grisly ghosts we come to raving robots with Beyond Westworld a short lived tv series that totally ignored the events of the sequel Futureworld following directly on the heels of Westworld.
From the wild west of the future - or at least the wild west of the predicted future of the 70s - we come to a more old fashioned vision of the west with an episode of Bonanza guest - starring Charles Bronson.
Because I mentioned cult siren Angie Dickinson's appearance in Rio Bravo I thought about replacing this episode of Bonanza with one from police procedural tv show Police Woman from the 70s where Angie played the titular character for four seasons and I did find a good one where she goes undercover as a hooker - and in high quality too - but it's in english.
So I have to safe it for another occasion. I could have included one of the episodes in spanish that I did find but none of them are exceptional enough that they are worth the hassle of changing things around now and it would also disrupt the whole western schpiel I got going on here.

Congrats dude and this makes me nostalgic for the days when I used to have a real comicbook collection. As a big fan of the X - Men I had a lot of the books in the mutant part of the mighty Marvel universe and the biggest chunk was my Uncanny X - Men section which not only included a lot of issues in german, spanish and reprint form like the Essentials or trades but also as single issues - many of which I bought when they came out - without interruption from issue 212 to issue 415, most in pretty good condition.

I think I have already posted the original version of the first movie but I am tempted to re - post it as part of a double feature for the exclusively english speaking blog followers now that channel New Castle After Dark has made both movies available again in good quality.
