I know that nowadays it´s always billed as a graphic novel - like any other comicbook series once it has a certain amount of success or gets adapted into a tv series or a movie - but I just can´t call something that is not a graphic novel a graphic novel. Also since DC Comics - like all of the other major ( or even minor ) comicbook publishers - has never sent me any review copies I don´t feel obligated to spread their retroactive continuity.
Now as longtime readers know I have always found WATCHMEN to be a bit overrated. For all its good parts I think the creators had it easy in that they didn´t need to factor in a pre - existing continuity. They could tell their story and break all the toys without caring what other creators would have to deal with. In this aspect I always found Marvel Comics 12 issue series SQUADRON SUPREME by the late Mark Gruenwald better. It also tackled the problems super heroes face in the real world but they used pre - existing characters which were later used by other creators.
Like the characters of WATCHMEN were in BEFORE WATCHMEN and just recently in DOOMSDAY CLOCK. But that is not Today´s topic. Anyway, beyond this personal preference I can´t deny that WATCHMEN is one of the technically best made comics ever. It was planned meticulously, executed flawlessly and it has so many layers upon layers and meanings upon meanings that you can read it a dozen times and still find new things you hadn´t seen before or old thing you had already forgotten about.
Now there have been enough articles, essays and in fact whole books about WATCHMEN, the hidden meaning, the obvious meaning etc. so I won´t bore you with any attempts to dig out something nobody thought of before. Personally I have been thinking about getting a new edition of the comic since my old copy of the trade paperback - still not a graphic novel - is pretty old and battered but I´m not sure which edition to buy especially since there seems to be an ARTIFACT EDITION available now.
I´m also thinking about getting the BEFORE WATCHMEN omnibus since I only have gotten the BEFORE WATCHMEN : DR. MANHATTAN mini series by Adam Hughes ( back when he was still drawing stuff that was worth to spend money on ) and the DOLLAR BILL one shot by Steve Rude. I know that for some it is sacrilege to read these comics since Alan Moore does not approve but with such a cash cow like WATCHMEN it was only a matter of time before DC Comics wnet back to the well. And I have already sinned by reading DOOMSDAY CLOCK. And I also said I liked SQUADRON SUPREME better. So it´s already too late for me. Plus the creative tems behind the BEFORE WATCHMEN books reads like a Who´s Who of comics creators.
Speaking of sacrilege, am I the only one who hasn´t seen the WATCHMEN tv show ? The fifth season of Marvel´s Agents Of S. H. I. E. L. D. has just come out in Germany so I´m going to binge watch that for the rest of the week. And WATCHMEN will have to wait until it also is released on DVD and BlueRay. One last thing about the adaptions of WATCHMEN : just two days ago I re - watched the german version of the movie which is heavily cut and which makes watching the extra content a weird experience.
Because a lot of the scenes that were cut in the german version keep popping up in the bonus section, mostly because they are that important. But hey, when has something like this ever stopped the german FSK ?
Anyway, without further ado here are the original art pages which I have selected including the colored version ( except for the WATCHMEN tryout page where I could not find one ) which in the case of WATCHMEN is even more necessary since the color plays an essential role in this comicbook.
Before we continue with the celebrity birthdays where we left off in our last post I want to include a video about WATCHMEN. There are a few more at the end of this post - I basically threw in as many as I could without repeating myself - but I wanted to have one where WATCHMEN is not treated like the be - all - end - all of comicbooks, pardon me, graphic novels like Today. So when this episode of Prisoners Of Gravity came out WATCHMEN was already well respected but it hadn´t gotten nearly the cult status that it has Today. Which you can see by the fact that writer Alan Moore still did interviews about it who is absent from all discussions about it Today. I guess artist Dave Gibbons doesn´t mind the attention.
We continue the litany of tv shows where Charles Napier guest starred with Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis Murder, Monk, Pacific Blue, Walker Texas Ranger and Renegade which´s only redeeming quality were the appearances of steamy sexbombs like PLAYBOY´s Playmate of the Month for May 1994 , Shae Marks as well as tv screen sirens of high caliber like hasian Kelly Hu, Leah Remini, Angie Harmon, sexorcist Linda Blair , babelon five Tracy Scoggins who even managed to outsex Teri Hatcher on Lois & Clark : The New Adventures of Superman ( more about sexbomb Teri Hatcher in our next post and yes, Charles Napier also was on that show ), Fabiana Udenio, Janet Gunn or the obligatory Becky Mullen and last but not least natural born 34C - 25 - 36 stripper starlet Kathleen Kinmont .

The film is still shown on tv mostly because of the raunchy striptease by Claudia Christian who is best known from another sci fi show, Babylon 5 by comic writer J. Michael Strazynski where she plays hot Commander Susan Ivanova. Although I doubt Claudia wore anything as skimpy as this on it.
In the movie bi - sexual Claudia Christian plays a stripper ( a role for which Claudia was born ) who gets taken over by a sex addicted alien parasite and the first thing the alien does with the stripper´s pornstar body is literally fuck a guy to death. Christy played a short but memorable part in SuperVixens and I always regretted that her part wasn´t bigger ( again, no pun intended ) and that she didn´t get naked. In most erotic movies I have seen there is always this one super hot actress who is the only one who doesn´t get naked but this was the first time it did happen in a Russ Meyer movie. Which is where you least expect something like this. Christy Hartburg was an anonymous Russ Meyer girl until a few years ago when she introduced her own website. Wherever Hartburg is Today, she left an incredible impression with her barely 5 minute role as Super Lorna.

Now I have bookmarked a few videos about Russ Meyer over the last few weeks but instead I´m going with a documentary about the history of American exploitation films because it starts with Charles Napier talking about his experience with director Russ Meyer and shooting his movies.
Apropos Russ Meyer, somebody who could have been easily in one of his movies is thick hasian Jenny Babas who not only looks like any guys wet sex dream come to life but also has real acting chops. I re - watched the movie just recently and I have to say that it is a pretty faithful adaptation. I guess one reason why it flopped at the box office was that the moviegoers were expecting a funny Marvel Comic / Disney comicbook movie. You know, one of these films where nothing is serious and everybody is constantly cracking jokes. No matter if it fits character or not. So naturally they were shocked by this uncompromising, grim - and - gritty, desolate take on the american superhero. By the way, I hope that the voice of the narrator in the video is just his feeble attempt at a drunk stupor and not his real voice because it´s very annoying beyond compare.
Our animated video of the day is Tales Of The Black Freighter for all those people out there who didn´t buy the ultimete cut of Watchmen where it ran alongside the newsstand subplot. Just one example how comicbooks can pull off things with ease that movies have problems with adapting.
As it has become a staple we end the post with another virtual panel from Wizardworld 2020´s Virtual Experiences this time with the cast of DC´s Legends Of Tomorrow. As in previous videos the big guns are missing but there are so many legendary actors on this show that it doesn´t matter.
