TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN: Friday Fright Night : The Tomb Of Dracula !

You think that I would be busy enough writing two posts about Marvel Comics NIGHTSTALKERS at the same time but longtime followers of the blog know that I like to triple check everything and so naturally I went back to see when my last post about Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan's TOMB OF DRACULA was. So imagine my surprise when I realized that I had written only one post about that subject so far and to remedy that horrible situation we have a TOMB OF DRACULA double feature Today.

Now everybody who has visited this blog over a prolonged period of time knows what a big fan of his work I am so it comes as a bit of a surprise that so far I have only done one full post about the series for which he is best known, TOMB OF DRACULA with the complete artwork for issue 41.

I mean, I have done anniversary posts for Gene Colan that featured artwork from all the different series he worked on in 2016 and 2017 , I wrote three posts for his run on the Batman titles in 2018, one on his DAREDEVIL run in 2019 , one on his work on the DOCTOR STRANGE books in 2022 , heck I even did one post in 2023 about his run on WONDER WOMAN - which is never mentioned when people talk about his work - but I've only done one spotlight for his work on THE TOMB OF DRACULA.

What is especially vexing about this whole matter is I vividly remember preparing all of the necessary material for a spotlight post on Blade with selected pages from the series featuring Marvel's most famous vampire hunter but if I did that I definitely never got around to write that post.

Which was my original idea for this post since Blade is also a part of the NIGHTSTALKERS and that way I could give all of the people out there who only know Blade from the movies with Wesley Snipes - or the younger audience who only knows him from the Wesley Snipes cameo appearance in the DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE movie a bit of backstory on this seminal Marvel Comics character. Yup, at least that was the plan.

But while preparing the stuff for this post I found the complete original artwork for issues 36 and 37 of THE TOMB OF DRACULA and since it is too much to cram it all into a single post I am doing another double feature with issue 36 in this post and issue 37 in our next post. I don't think I can do another post Tomorrow so I am already wishing all horror enthusiasts out there a blessed Samhain, a happy All Hallow's Eve and may the the green man and the green lady keep a watchful eye over you. And beware of elves and other magic folks especially if they offer you food or drinks.

Salma Hayek was also in the 1999 WILD WILD WEST movie with Will Smith and Kevin Kline and she was a big part of the pull of the film. No, really, in my opinion if you have an actress with a stunning physique than you have to use that if you are a good director. And you seize the opportunity if you have an oscar - winning actor like Mickey Rourke in a movie instead of giving Dennis Rodman more screentime because you want to be his buddy or you´re smoking weed together. Also I think it should be a rule in horror movies that female characters only die after they have been naked. You might think this IS a rule - especially if you have seen the SCREAM saga - but it isn´t. Trust me, I have seen dozens of horror movies were whole squads of hot, nubile chicks met their end before undressing. What a waste. And it´s the same with Salma Hayek.

Back to WILD WILD WEST Salma Hayek has some good scenes in the movie but ultimately she´s not a very likeable or sympathetic character.

Because she plays the helpless damsel in distress the whole movie until the end when the old, decrepit " father " Will Smith and Kevin Kline have almost died to save turns out to her virile, potent and young husband.

It´s the part of the movie that bugs me the most. I guess it´s realistic that this sweet and hot looking massita is in reality a lying, scheming woman who seduces the heroes to get what she wants and doesn´t get her deserved comeuppance but I don´t have to watch a movie for that.

Neil Gaiman has also said that Jon Peters insisted a giant mechanical spider be included in a movie adaptation of THE SANDMAN .

As I mentioned in previous posts, in Germany only the first three seasons of Burn Notice had come out on DVD and I was still waiting to see if they continue with the series on DVD and if not I was thinking about getting some of the seasons through imports but now that I am in exile in Spain I don't know if I can ever finish the show since it is neither available from amazon prime nor could I find anything about it on amazon Spain. Not that I could watch them if I had any DVDs or Blue Rays since I have no appliances for that. And that after I got invested in the story of Sam - Bruce Campbell's character on the show who even got his own spin - off.

In any case, it's a shame that season five of Burn Notice never got a DVD release and probably never will either because Busenwunder Charisma Carpenter's funbags alone are worth the price of admission. Daimn !
