When you least expect the Mark of Kane !

You might think that after finally wrapping up all the posts I have started in these last days I would take a break. But after I put up all the links of the new posts on facebook I noticed that the last two posts are two Marvel Comics posts in a row. Now as longtime readers know I don´t like that and always try to bring a bit of variety to the blog. And because I didn´t want to work too long on this I went through all the material that I have already prepared and after a bit of consideration I decided to go with Gil Kane because not only has it been a really long time since I posted something of him there is also only one folder left I haven´t posted yet.

Which doesn´t mean there won´t be any Gil Kane posts in the future. There is still enough original Gil Kane art I haven´t posted yet. But this is the last part of the batch I prepared which is the best of the best. Or at least it was at that time. Anyway, this is an ending but also a beginning.

Gil Kane was one of the great artists of the 20th century and while it took me a while to do a post on him I more than made up for that by dedicating fifteen ( 15 !!! ) posts to Gil Kane. But before you panic, most of the posts just contain a selection of original art and covers which is one of the things he was known for. For Marvel he did a plethora of covers which is one of the reasons why I made more Marvel posts than DC posts for him.

With so many posts I almost didn´t include them but then I decided in favor of my newer readers. I thought about just numbering them but I think if I go to all the trouble and go through these links I should include some info. As I said I made less posts for DC than for Marvel, one about his covers for the german Superman / Batman issues by Ehapa , one with his covers for Green Lantern and the last one with more DC covers . For his Marvel work I did posts with some of his best covers , with more covers , with his Giant - Sized covers , his covers for Shang - Chi : Master of Kung Fu, one about his covers for Marvel´s horror titles - almost in alphabetical order - and the last one with even more covers for their horror titles .

I also did a black and white post with a selection of covers for DC and Marvel , one post with some covers from western comic books for DC and Marvel , one post with covers for swords and sorcery comic books , one post with an emphasis on DC and Marvel´s black characters , one about covers for comic books related to movies and last but not least one with covers for all those comic book series you may never have heard about .

Like I said, I have written more Marvel posts than DC posts for Gil Kane which is the reason why this one is all about DC. Of course with a name like TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN you would expect that this post would be full of his work for the SUPERMAN titles but I am saving that for a special post I intend to write about that, especially since it gives me a chance to pimp the ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN BY GIL KANE hardcover.

But while I don´t have any art from that book in the post that doesn´t mean there is no Gil Kane art from other comicbook series with Superman.

Besides the regular books with Superman like SUPERBOY and ACTION COMICS Gil Kane also worked on SUPERMAN : DISTANT FIRES, SUPERMAN - BLOOD OF MY ANCESTORS and did the covers to the sadly short lived THE DARING NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERGIRL series which DC has finally reprinted, in no small regard thanks to the success of the CW tv show.

The interior art in those issues was done by Carmine Infantino - whom I did not really appreciate when the series originally came out - with inking assist by Bob Oksner about whom I have written in this post . Because I don´t think he gets enough credit. If you don´t believe me just check out the internet databases and you will be blown away by all the stuff he did.

Now I don´t want to resort to old stereotypes but despite being such a short series Supergirl does go through a number of different costumes in the course of the issues. She starts with my favorite Supergirl costume.

I don´t know why but I just like the Supergirl costume with the puffed sleeves and the hot pants - as long as the artist in question can draw legs. But it seems that I am in the minority because this costume doesn´t get a lot of play. Of course there have been literally dozens of different Supergirl costumes over the decades but that is the topic for a different spotlight.

So in issue 13 Supergirl appears in a new costume that looks more like the first costume she wears in the tv show : without the puffy sleeves and with a skirt instead of the hot pants. In the story she claims because the other one looked too much like Superman´s costume but going back to the skirt she had first from the pants is not really a sign of emancipation.

At the end of issue 17 a headband is added to Supergirl´s costume which is explained in the story as a symbol of kryptonian citizenship but I think it had more to do with the aerobic craze that took the world by storm caused by such bendable fitness brabusters like Jane Fonda, Olivia Newton John, Raquel Welch , Victoria Principal , Cathy Lee Crosby or Markie Post .

While Supergirl´s costumes went into decline there were some better ones for the super villainesses Kara fought. By the way, is it a coincidence that at the time Marvel Comics biggest seller was UNCANNY X - MEN there were a lot of villains at DC that were mutants and had psychic powers ?

The colored version of it is either from there or from THE WORLD`S FINEST BLOG on the issue and the latter one is also where I found the splash page of the Green Arrow / Black Canary back up from issue 283. The original art from Sergio Aragones´ Fanboy issue 2 was found on Kevin Nowlan´s blog since he inked the whole thing and it´s also the source for one of the original art pages from Superman : Distant Fires. Before we come to the funtertainment section of the post which has gotten a bit out of hand again as it tends to happen when I write about the teenage sexbombs from Teens React - sorry Busenwunder Becca - we come to a very underrated comic. It´s true, Gil Kane only did a few issues of VIGILANTE but it´s a really good book and some issues were written by Alan Moore who also wrote WATCHMEN, V FOR VENDETTA and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Also Vigilante made an appearance in the ARROW show so there might be some comic newcomers who are interested in what happened to Adrian Chase and the other men who took up the mantle of Vigilante in the comicbook. Sorry that I only found a video in spanish but that´s only further proof how few people appreciate this comicbook.
