It´s back to comicbooks on January the 11th with somebody I don´t think I have mentioned before and that´s because I am not informed enough to write an adequate essay on Bob Harras who has been unjustly blamed for everything from Marvel´s near bankruptcy to The Clone Saga and Heroes Reborn even if he became Editor - In - Chief at Marvel Comics after these things were underway. Now I am not trying to come to the defense of Bob Harras ( especially since Rich Johnston on BLEEDING COOL and Matt Re at NOT A HOAX ! NOT A DREAM ! are doing a much better job of that then I ever could ) and instead just want to mention some of the books he worked on. This is in no way meant to be a complete list so please, don´t send me any comments like " How could you leave out series x ? That is my favorite series. " Also I will stay on the Marvel side of his resume since I am much more familiar with it. I will also ignore most of the Spider - Man books he worked on even if I did read some of them. But that is much more in my brother´s wheelhouse since those books were on his pull list.
Now the first series I read and on which Bob Harras had an impact was Avengers where he was the writer on issues 334 to 339 which was The Collection Obsession, one of the worst Avengers adventures ever - story and art wise - and issues 343 to 395 which included Operation Galactic Storm, the Bloodties crossover with the X - Men as well as one of my favorite alternate earths in which everybody dies stories The Gatherers Saga. With issue 396 he switched to editor on the book and stayed until Heroes Reborn and the much better Heroes Return by Kurt Busiek and George Perez. He also edited Carlos Pacheco´s Avengers Forever maxi series and Mark Waid and Mark Bagley´s mindblowing Thunderbolts series.
Other series he edited and I enjoyed at Marvel Comics include Rom issues 42 to 58, MC2 books like A Next, Juggernaut 2, Fantastic Five and most importantly the first 15 issues of Spider - Girl, the tail end of Tom DeFalco and Paul Ryan´s Fantastic Four run with issues 410 to 416 as well as the following run which includes the first 3 brilliant issues by Alan Davis, the first 25 issues of Christopher Priest´s Black Panther, Dan Jurgens and John Romita Jr.´s Thor, Mark Waid and Ron Garney´s Captain America, John Byrne / Paul Jenkins and Ron Garney´s Hulk, Paul Jenkins Inhumans maxi series, John Byrne´s Marvel - The Lost Generation and X - Men : The Hidden Years, the Peter David / Todd McFarlane Hulk, the three issue Hellcat mini series by Norm Breyfogle, Ka - Zar by Mark Waid and Andy Kubert, Heroes For Hire by Pasqual Ferry, the very underrated Alpha Flight series from 1997 by writer Steve Seagle who used the very rare second person narrative, the very overrated Peter David Captain Marvel series ( although I liked the issues by Jim Starlin ) as well as the first 13 issues of Joe Quesada´s Daredevil which includes the famous Guardian Devil story.
Bob is however best known as editor of the X - Men titles and besides a plethora of mini series that include Rogue by Mike Wieringo, Storm by Terry Dodson and Sabretooth by Mark Texeira he also edited New Mutants and X - Force with runs by Fabian Nicieza and Greg Capullo, Tony Daniel and Adam Pollina, Generation X, X - Factor which includes runs by Walter Simonson, Larry Stroman and Steve Epting, Wolverine with runs by John Buscema, Marc Silvestri and Mark Texeira and last but not least Uncanny X - Men 232 to 386 and X - Men 1 to 106 which include the second Brood Saga, Inferno, Acts Of Vengeance, X - Tinction Agenda, Executioner´s Song, The Phalany Convenant, Legion Quest and The Age Of Apocalypse, Onslaught or Operation Zero Tolerance and stellar artists like Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, John Romita Jr., Joe Madureiras, Carlos Pacheco or the great Alan Davis.
Now as I said, I don´t know enough about the behind the scenes dealing to make statements about Bob Harras as an editor of the x - titles but fact is that one of the darkest days in Marvel´s publishing history was when all of their best artists ( including Marc Silvestri and Jim Lee which he had brought in from other books ) left to form iMAGE Comics. Suddenly they had no artists for their best selling books and it would have been quite understandable if Bob Harras had despaired. But instead he just put the Kubert brothers, John Romita Jr and Joe Madureiras on the x - titles and they were even stronger than before. You have to give him kudos for that.
Anyway, this is just a brief resume but I wanted to include it because a . ) while I have not done a specific post for Bob Harras I have written about a lot of those books above so I can include a lot of links to older posts for my newer readers. And b. ) I can write more about this in following years.
It´s former Mtv vj Maria Guzenina who turned 51 on January the 12th and I completely brainfarted on her anniversary even though I wrote her birth date on the bookmark. Maria was one of the hottest vjs from the 1990s and those who watched Mtv at that time surely remember her fondly.
