We continue our pop culture birthday romp on August the 15th with Paul Gulacy who turns 66. He got his own spotlight post in 2016 and like it couldn´t be any other way of course it was all about one of my all time favorite comicbook series ever - SHANG CHI, MASTER OF KUNG FU.
For those who came in late and missed out on all the kung furying / karate chopping martial arts action I wrote twoposts about the series in general and did five spotlights : one for each of the books artists, Gene Day and Mike Zeck , a special post on Gil Kane who provided a lot of the early covers and one for all the other artists who worked on this great series .
I have been pimping the book like crazy and I like to think that I had a small part in convincing Disney to finally reprint this seminal series, not only in four hefty omnibus but also in two Epic Collections of which the last one just came out. At the moment it is still too expensive for me but good things come to those that wait. Now with so many posts about this series under my belt you might think that I have shot my bolt so to speak.
But nothing could be further from the truth. I still haven´t done a post about the british covers to the series, the painted spanish covers to the series, art by a few more artists, I still have enough material for at least one more Paul Gulacy spotlight and I haven´t even scratched the surface where Gene Day or Mike Zeck are concerned. So for all those martial art fans out there, don´t fear this is a topic that will continue on this blog.
As for Paul Gulacy, I wanted his second spotlight post to be about the other series he worked on throughout his career and for the longest time I just didn´t have enough good material. Now I have an abundance but I have to sort through it and see if I can find the color pages to the original art. Which isn´t easy. Finding Paul Gulacy´s covers to DANGER TRAIL alone was a quest in itself. It seems not many people ever heard of this series.
It will be some time before I can do another Paul Gulacy post but as my longtime followers know that only means it is delayed not abandoned.
Since the Paul Gulacy MASTER OF KUNG FU spotlight also includes the celebrity birthdays for August the 15th we skip them and go directly to the 17th of August and an artist who is a frequent guest on this blog. It´s none other than John Romita Junior who celebrated his 63rd birthday.
There is also the series about his first stint on AMAZING SPIDER - MAN which I started last year which I am hoping to continue. Especially since I wrote about it at length in my first post so that the second one should be done quicker ( yeah, like that´s going to work out ). I have all the material for the second post lined up including a few links I´ve been dying to post.
And last but not least there is my semi - annual series of posts on David Micheline and Bob Layton´s iconic INVINCIBLE IRON MAN run and as some people tend to forget this was one of John Romita´s first penciling gigs.
He was part of the creative team during the famous DEMON IN A BOTTLE story and while I have only done one post solely with John Romita Jr art newer readers of the blog - as well as those who missed them - should check out all the Bob Layton IRON MAN posts. By the way, John Romita Jr returned to the title under the penmenship of John Byrne which is an excellent run that you can get in one of the best Epic Collections ever.
It´s back to comics on August the 22nd which is the anniversary of Ray Bradbury´s birth and while I haven´t done a proper solo post about him I posted The Black Ferris from The Haunt Of Fear 18 in this Jack Davis EC Comics double feature . They adapted a few of his stories in comic form.
Longtime readers of the blog know that I always paid attention to the inkers but while I think that a good inker can make or break a comic ( which is one of the reasons why I don´t like comics that take the art directly from the pencils or are inked digitally ) I haven´t folders for any of them in my blog art archive except forJoeSinnott. Which is the reason why Alfredo Alcala and Terry Austin had to share a post in 2016 since they both were born on August the 23rd. While Alfredo was an accomplished artist in his own rights - who could ever forget his famous Masters Of The Universe mini comics ? - he is best known to comic readers as the inker on such titles like The Savage Sword Of Conan and he also inked a lot of the Batman issues during Gene Colan´s run and many Bat - books in the 1980s.
The Alfredo Alcala / Terry Austin post has more celebrity birthdays from August the 23rd and there also are a few more from August the 14th, the 15th and the 23rd in this completely inappropriate Yaya Han post .
