TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN: KING - SIZED Thorsday pimping Jack Kirby !

I have more than enough unfinished posts on my plate but I wanted to write this post for a week now so I finally buckled down to pimp two of those humongous King - Sized Jack Kirby books Marvel Comics published.

As longtime followers know I already did a similar post in 2019 using the opportunity to do a birthday post for Vince Coletta at the same time.

Because these bargains are very rare especially nowadays that prices for comicbooks have gone through the roof thanks to the movie inspired speculators who think that hardcovers that contain only reprints will rise in value like the original single issues. So it is more important than ever to make these rare opportunities known to the general public. Now the first time I pimped the King - Sized Kirby books that was strictly for my readers in Germany because the offer was at amazon Germany while this time it is only for my readers in Spain. As you probably might guess I'm getting the few comicbooks I can add to my reading pile ( since I still can't bring myself to call it a comicbook collection ) from amazon Spain because the shipping costs from Germany take a huge bite of any price differences of the bargain books I might find there. And so this is for my spanish audience - if it still exists - that reads comicbooks in the original american version ( which can't be a very high percentage since Spain generally translates most of Marvel Comics output and offers it at much lower prices ) and doesn't mind schlepping such an oversized hardcover around that is even bigger than the already giant Artist Editions and should be registered as a deadly weapon just on the basis of its weight.

Okay, time to spill the beans. The two books I am talking about are the KIRBY IS MIGHTY ! and KIRBY IS FANTASTIC ! hardcovers and they are currently still available at amazon Spain for 55 EUROS plus 6 EUROS for shipping which makes a total cost of 61 EUROS. Which is more than the 49 EUROS I paid the last time I ordered the KIRBY IS MIGHTY ! hardcover but still way below the regular store price between 91 and 100 EUROS.

There is also the King - Sized KIRBY RETURNS ! - which I bought for the ridiculous price of 23 EUROS back then - but that has a price tag of 93 EUROS ( shipping costs included ) so unless you are an absolute Jack Kirby fan with a lot of money to burn I would recommend waiting until it is offered with a bit of a discount. Oh, one more thing : you can also get the KIRBY IS MIGHTY ! hardcover for 55 EUROS via amazon Germany. So any german Jack Kirby or Thor fans might want to use this while it lasts.

Since I already listed the contents of the King - Sized KIRBY IS MIGHTY ! book in the aforementioned Vince Coletta birthday post we can come to the contents of KIRBY IS FANTASTIC ! which is about the groundbreaking FANTASTIC FOUR issue by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Now the guys from amazon Spain have been a bit enthusiastic with rounding up the page count of the FANTASTIC FOUR book as it is listed with 400 pages when in fact it has the same page count as the THOR book which is 320 pages.

This hardcover collects FANTASTIC FOUR issues 4 ( in which Johnny Storm finds an amnesiac Prince Namor ), 12 ( the first Thing vs Hulk brawl ), 25 and 26 ( the second Thing vs Hulk fight with all the Avengers guest - starring in the latter issue ), 52 and 53 ( the introduction of the Black Panther ), 66 and 67 ( introduction of Adam Warlock ), 84 to 87 ( an iconic confrontation with arch nemesis Doctor Doom ) and last but not least FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL 6 ( Reed, Ben and Johnny travel to the Negative Zone to save the life of Sue and their unborn son Franklin ).

Not a bad compilation of FANTASTIC FOUR stories. As usual I am not trying to influence anybody to run out and buy this, I just want to put it out there that if you were ever interested in getting more classic Jack Kirby or Stan Lee ( let's not forget his contribution since most comicbook afficionados tend to downplay his role in building the Marvel universe since he regrettably always got more press than the talented artists that brought these stories to life ) or even FANTASTIC FOUR stories for your comicbook library but you were hesitant because it costs an arm and a leg now might be the time to reconsider this. Because as I always say ( and I have been proven right time after time ) these offers never last long and in the end we don't regret buying the books where we paid too much as much as not buying the books that were cheap. Nuff said.

With two books to pimp you might wonder why I chose to go with THOR pages for most of the post as I already did a similar post and the answer is that I don't have a lot of Kirby FANTASTIC FOUR pages at the moment.

Granted, unfortunately not many of the original Jack Kirby THOR pages are from issues that are included in the KIRBY IS MIGHTY ! hardcover but I did find the complete original art for issue 134 which comes right after issues 131 to 133. So it has the same creative team like the previous issue and the reason why it was not included is that the previous three issues are one story arc. Also since I did not find the original pages on Heritage Auctions the quality is a bit lower but still good enough to post.

Regular blog visitors may have noticed that I changed the following movie but I always try to see the positive side of things which in this case is that we have our very first Burt Reynolds movie on the blog.
