Initially the next post on the blog was supposed to be another birthday post on Jack Kirby since I already had all the material prepared on Monday but as usual life had other plans. I thought I could do it Today, but since it´s Gene Colan´s anniversary - and since my last post was about Marvel´s CONAN and I don´t like to do two Marvel posts in a row - I thought I could post some of the pages I couldn´t include in my last Gene Colan spotlight.
Okay, if you want to get technical about it my last post about Gene Colan was the one where I posted DETECTIVE COMICS 559 in which Batman and Catwoman team up with Green Arrow and Black Canary but those who read the post I made to pimp the second volume of TALES OF THE BATMAN - GENE COLAN may remember I had to leave out a big part of the pages I had selected for the post because I couldn´t just post part of DETECTIVE COMICS 533. The story by Doug Moench was just too good. But our loss back then is also our gain Today because we can jump right into Today´s post of Gene Colan goodness. One last thing before we come to some beautiful Gene Colan black and white art - with the according color pages as usual - since I couldn´t write a post on Alfredo Alcala´s birthday I made sure to include some pages that feature his distinctive inks since Alfredo worked on a lot of Batman tales in this period. And now what better way is there to start your weekend then with some Gene Colan Batman art ?

Staying with horror comics written by Marv Wolfman THAT´S NOT CURRENT , THE SECRET SUN and RAGGED CLAWS all take a look back on Night Force, THE FIRE AND WATER PODCAST has post on issues 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 of the series ( they may have more but these are the ones I came across doing the research for this post ) and BLOG INTO MYSTERY has a post about Night Force 9. As I said, I planned to write more about the book which was one that you had to dive into the back issue bins for but in the meantime the complete run has been reprinted in a nice hardcover which I can only recommend for all Gene Colan fans, fans of horror comics or anyone who want to read a great comic by two masters of their craft.
Speaking of obscure comic book series you had to do some bin diving for we come from the grsly to the weird with one of Gene Colan´s most far out series. Yep, even stranger than Howard the Duck. Those readers who participated in this blog´s BIG CHRISTMAS CONTESTS ( which were an annual tradition in which I gave away free comics ) and who were lucky enough to get some of the free offerings from Archie Comics for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY may have recognized Gene Colan´s art in some of the stories. But that was not his only work for the company and COMICS ALLIANCE has a post about the confusing Jughead´s Time Police in which four Jugheads from different time zones had adventures in time and space during which they battled Morgan le Fay which is also the subject of a post on THE COMICS CUBE and if you want to read that mind boggling yarnArchie Comics is releasing this comic book milestone as a digital collection . We can only hope that it sells well so we can have a print edition soon.
As it has been a week since my last post there are a few birthdays - comic book related and otherwise important - that I missed and the first one is the aforementioned 101st birthday of Jack Kirby. I don´t want to put up links to all posts that tackle that subject and as longtime readers know Jack Kirby has been popping up in a lot of posts on this blog. From my feature post on Big Barda to my special THORSDAY posts about issues 171 ( part 1 / part 2 ) and 173 ( part 1 / part 2 ) where I found the german black and white pages of the issues from Williams to a THORSDAY post on Vince Coletta´s birthday with a special focus on the horrible re - coloring of Disney´s re - issuing of TALES OF ASGARD in an omnibus edition that obstructs almost all of Kirby´s art. I still hope to write the post I initially intended to do Today in the not too distant future but in the meantime new readers might want to check out last year´s Jack Kirby appreciation post which was an assemblage of various series he worked on or the post from 2016 which was a feature on Pacific Comics CAPTAIN VICTORY series .
Also on August the 28th Kelly Overton turned 40 who is famous for showing off her butt cleavage in the 2010 Tekken movie. If you take the correlation between the way a woman dances and how she is in the bedroom into consideration Kelly must be a real sex freak in the bed.
We continue with August 29th as Jason Pearson turned 48. Hey, if Danger Girl can keep selling the same issues again and again in new books why can´t we get Body Bags at least once ?
On August the 30th we had two comic creators, Robert Crumb and Jaques Tardi celebrating their respective birthdays and because I haven´t written specific posts for either of them - and it doesn´t seem like this is going to change - here are two videos which I have been saving up for a long time.
Our first birthday Today is comic writer Joe Kelly due to the fact that there is no record about the year of his birth. If you have been reading comics for more than a few years you have without a doubt come across his name since he has been on many books. One of those books is Justice League of America, where his run was very underappreciated despite such all time favorites - at least for me - like Trial by Fire, The Obsidian Age and one of the best Justice League spin off series Justice League Elite. At this point I have probably read the two trades of The Obsidian Age a dozen times and I have no idea why DC still hasn´t done an absolute edition or at least a nice hardcover collection with the entire epic saga.
Dawn gave me an opportunity to include another hot woman of exotic descend into my cast and I liked her in the Justice League - and her husband Manitou Raven - even though I was not keen on her backstory.
The first thing we know about her is that she grew huge boobs at the early age of thirteen which all the old tribe members noticed first.

Another guy named Joe is Joe Jusko and since his year of birth is known I can tell you that he celebrates his 59th birthday. Like with Jason Pearson I have made a special folder for him and I think I have enough for a decent post but as always time is a commodity I never seem to have enough of. Especially when I am writing these ultra long entertainment sections.
The inventor of Tae Bo Billy Blanks turns 63 who starred in many martial arts movies like the Jean - Claude Van Damme vehicles Lionheart and The King of Kickboxers which is called Karate Tiger V in Germany. Billy also appeared in Kiss The Girls with Morgan Freeman, The Last Boy Scout with Bruce Willis and HalleBerry who does her unforgettable eroticdance ( you can´t really call it a striptease since she doesn´t take off any clothes ) and China O´Brian II. What I still have is a video I was saving up for a Christmas post but I have more than enough Christmas specials right now - including the infamous Star Wars Christmas Special - that I can´t possibly fit them all into this year´s December posts. Plus I want to give props to the great late Jim Varney, whom I sadly discovered really late in my life and who for me is one of the most underrated actors and comedians of this era. Most people only associate him with Ernest but if you have seen The Bervery Hillbillies you know that he could also play very subdued and nuanced characters.
One series I haven´t started watching is The Munsters and Today is also the anniversary of Yvonne De Carlo best known for playing Lily Munster.
The reason why I haven´t started is that I haven´t the time with all the super hero related tv series that I try to keep up with. I am not always successful - right now I still have to see the fifth season of Marvel´s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and because I have now started to watch Kolchak, the Night Stalker after finding a few rare episodes in german on YouTube it will be a while longer until I finally get to unpack the complete Munsters box set which I got really cheap at one of amazon´s last bargain sales.
The last two birthdays I have to mention are people who have had a big impact on pop culture : Rocky Marciano, not only the inspiration for the Rocky movies but also one of the best boxers of all times and Edgar Rice Burroughs whose Tarzan, John Carter, Warlord of Mars and The Land That Time Forgot books inspired countless adaptions in comics and movies.
With all the stuff in the fun block so far we still haven´t gotten to the cartoon video of the day but because we already had some long videos and you are probably tired at this point I want to include the making of another underrated classic. Now I am not saying this is the best animated feature film ever but the music alone is worth the price of admission.
As it couldn´t be any other way I have to end the post with a Gene Colan video.
