There had been splash pages before but Will Eisner practically invented the technique of including the credits and title in the surroundings of the establishing shot while already setting up the mood of the following story.
And sometimes he didn´t even have time to do an elaborate establishing shot and had to get right to the first page of the story. But I don´t want to pontificate without end about Will Eisner´s splash pages because in this case it´s better to show than tell. I wanted to keep it to one post for all the splash pages but there were just so many good ones that I finally decided to make two posts. Initially I wanted to divide it according to the chronological order with one post for the newer ones ( since he really hit it out of the park on those ) and another for the older ones but I didn´t want to have too many similar splash pages - say a lot with street signs - in one post. So I tried to put the best ones here without repeating myself too much. I don´t know if I will do the second part right away or later but let´s get to it because in this case a picture - or better said a splash page - is worth more than a thousand words and I have already said enough.

Since all of my bookmarked episodes of Columbo have been deleted here is another crime tv show from my youth The Strange Methods of Franz Josef Wanninger. The lead was a police inspector whose specialized in " unsolvable cases " and like Columbo he often played the part of klutzy buffoon - in his case by overplaying bavarian manners - to be overlooked and to make the criminals not take him seriously. The series started in black and white and lasted 52 episodes until it was re - titled as The Immortal Methods Of Franz Josef Wanninger and ran 60 more episodes.
Now this is a cartoon that wasn´t even on my radar because otherwise I would have included it in my first post about Will Eisner´s THE SPIRIT this year. Not that I never heard of Sam & Max : Freelance Police, it´s one of my favorite comics and I wish there were more issues but I never knew they had made a cartoon about it. Well, at least I can watch a lot of the episodes via YouTube. And if you like the cartoon and have never heard of the comic, it has my utmost recommendation and you can get it at well selected online comic shops ( with the Corona virus all the comic shop in Germany have closed doors and are only serving the mail order clients ).
Seeing as so many people are forced to stay indoors to prevent the spreading of the virus we are wrapping things up with a longer video : British Intellgence from 1940 starring none other than Boris Karloff.
