TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN: Skartaris Saturday : Mike Grell's WARLORD !

Once again going through ye olde archives I realized that I never made a spotlight post for one of my favourite comicbook series of all times from my misspent youth and seeing as comic legend Mike Grell just celebrated his 76th birthday a few days ago it is time to gather round the campfire, take a deep sip and reminiscence about the glory that was WARLORD.

Now I know what my longtime followers are thinking, namely that I have covered both - Mike Grell's work and WARLORD - in some previous posts.

BUT I have never written a Mike Grell post that was exclusively about WARLORD. So far I have of course done the trifecta of my THE ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN series which cover the various GREEN ARROW comicbook series and of course Mike Grell's contribution to the legacy is mentioned.

He naturally also pops up in certain posts about possibly the greatest super hero series of all time - THE LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES - since he was one of the artists who contributed to it's huge popularity in the 70s and 80s ( as I mentioned before THE LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES was one of only six DC titles that were chosen to try out the new Baxter paper together with Marv Wolfman and George Perez THE NEW TEEN TITANS ) and because those are some of my all time favourite stories. And not only because he drew them Legion babes like ultimate sexbombs. You gotta give it to the man, he made them look hotter than ever especially in the disco outfits which for me are the best costumes they ever had.

Which for a long time I thought were also created by Mike Grell, but no, those were designed by Dave Cockrum, who was the artist on LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES before Mike Grell and he had already given them a new contemporary wardrobe. Which was nothing new for the Legion of Super - Heroes since they not only got new costumes from the various artists but also from fans since the series encouraged the readers to participate by sending in their costumes designs for the Legion gals and lads and the best ones were chosen to appear within the pages of the comicbooks.

Man, Dave Cockrum sure worked on some groundbreaking comicbook series like THE LEGION OF SUPER - HEROES or the new X - Men team with writer Chris Claremont. Anyways, of course Mike Grell's Legion pages are included in a few Mike Grell birthday posts that I have made over the years but so far the only Mike Grell spotlight post I have done was about his creator owned series JON SABLE : FREELANCE . And of course I did mention WARLORD as far back as in 2013 when I wrote about the series DIE GROSSEN PHANTASTIC COMICS from german publisher Ehapa Verlag.

Which besides Mike Grell's grand opus about the lost world of Skartaris also brought such series like Don Lawrence's STORM, the CONAN knock - off TAAR, Brian Bolland's CAMELOT 3000 , native american adventurer AROK, SON OF STONE, AMETYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD ( which was later retconned to become part of the Legion Of Super - Heroes universe ), BLACK DRAGON by John Bolton and Chris Claremont and even Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson's classic SWAMP THING to german audiences.

Of course, being a german publisher they didn't print all of the WARLORD stories. While the first three WARLORD albums included Morgan Travis first appearance in 1st Issue Special 8 and issues 1 to 8 of the ongoing WARLORD series the fourth album for some reason made the jump from issue 9 to issues 22 and 23 while the next one included issues 32 to 34.

They continued with issue 35 to issue 36 but skipped ahead to issue 39 with the following one. Where they published issue 40 up to issue 43 but in the next one they had already jumped ahead to issues 55 to 57 and they continued until issue 61 in the following albums. The biggest part of DIE GROSSEN PHANTASTIC COMICS 34 : WARLORD - BEFREIER VON NEU - ATLANTIS was taken up by the contents of Warlord Annual 2 but with the next two albums we had another jump ahead as they included issues 74 to 79. As you can see there were some really big gaps in - between but since that was long before there was much information about american comicbooks available in Germany in those pre - internet days I always thought that WARLORD only lasted around 25 issues, 30 tops. So imagine my surprise when I went to my first conventions and found out that it had been one DC Comics longest Bronze Age titles with over 130 issues.

Aside from DIE GROSSEN PHANTASTIC COMICS there are three hardcovers from german publisher CrossCult that reprint the first 28 WARLORD issues but I don't know if there are any plans to continue with the whole series.

As for american reprints SHOWCASE PRESENTS : THE WARLORD includes the 1st Issue Special and issues 1 to 28 of WARLORD ( so it's basically the same as the three german hardcovers that are available but in black and white so it's a nice companion piece ) and the DC THROUGH THE 80s : THE END OF ERAS hardcover that includes issue 42. There is also the information going around on the internet that the following volume DC THROUGH THE 80s : THE EXPERIMENTS includes issues 48 and 55 but it only includes the AROK, SON OF THUNDER and ARION, LORD OF ATLANTIS back up stories from those issues not the WARLORD stories themselves.

Which I know because I was lucky enough to buy those hardcovers before my comicbook spending budget was cancelled. I never bought many of these " sampler " collections before but now that I had to say goodbye to my vast comicbook collection I am grateful for these books because it is the only way that I could get my hands on material from some classic series or iconic stories like BLACKHAWK , the aforementioned AMETYST PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD and CAMELOT 3000, CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW, INFINITY INC, JONAH HEX , Gene Colan's NATHANIEL DUSK, G. I. COMBAT's Haunted Tank, Joe Kubert's SGT ROCK , THE SUPER FRIENDS ( of which I really got a hankering to check them out after reading the issue ), WEIRD WAR TALES Creature Commandos, Alan Moore, Curt Swan and George Perez great Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow ?, Alan Moore's SWAMP THING and WATCHMEN, Grant Morrison's DOOM PATROL, Frank Miller's RONIN and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN or even such hidden gems like Ambush Bug's SECRET ORIGIN or a SLAM BRADLEY story illustrated by the great late Jim Aparo .

Okay, that is enough comicbook pimping for this post because I think my regular readers are already bored at this point but I wanted to include some information for newer blog visitors who are not familiar with the series about where they can find this. Which apart from the reprints I mentioned is the back issue section or dollar bins of any well sorted comic store as these issues should not be hard to find or too expensive.

Written, directed by and starring Robert Townsend this is a movie every 90s kid has fond memories of watching or at least seeing the ad on the back of countless comicbooks. There even was a comicbook produced by Marvel Comics.

We are doing a complete 180 from the eerie to the funny with one of those rare internet finds you come across from time to time. Pryor's Place was - as the name implies - a children's show with legendary comedian Richard Pryor that ran for one season of 13 episodes in 1984.

As most people know Richard Pryor plays the comedic lead in Superman III ( called Superman III - The Steel Lightning in Germany ) which is considered by most people as the second worst Superman movie in the Christopher Reeve series. Although when you watch it a second time you realize it is actually a Richard Pryor movie that happens to guest star Superman. Anyway, no matter if you don't like the movie or you think it's okay ( for me it has become one of those guilty pleasures ) what not a lot of people know is that there were plans to make the movie without Christopher Reeve and to have Tony Danza play the Man of Tomorrow.

Now if they really would have gone with Tony Danza as Superman they also could have brought on repentant all natural 42C - 23 - 36 born for porn blow up sex doll Alyssa Milano to play Superman's younger cousin.

Which would have led to an interesting family dynamic if they really would have gone in the direction to include Supergirl as a love interest and also possible sex partner for Superman especially seeing that Alyssa Milano played Tony Danza's daughter in Who's The Boss ? There also were a lot of stories in which Superman mentioned that if he really would marry somebody it would be neither Lois Lane nor Lana Lang but somebody as close to his cousin Supergirl as possible and that the only reason why he did not marry his cousin was that it was against the law on Krypton. Not because it was against the law on earth or in Amerika but because it was against the law on Krypton. So if it would not have been against the law on Krypton Superman would be happily banging his younger cousin's brains out six ways to Sunday. Let that sink in a little.

What is especially weird about this is that it is a radical departure from Superman's initial reaction to Supergirl which was keeping her cooped up in an orphanage while he is living la vida loca in his fortress of solitude.

" I'm sorry, Supergirl, but you got to stay in the orphanage because you didn't tell me ahead of time that you were coming so I didn't build you a special room in my vast fortress. Which houses an oil tanker. And now all the space is already taken up by other things and I just can't get rid of some specimens of my intergalactic zoo or repurpose the rooms I built just to remember my friends. Which serve no real purpose at all. "

But the minute Supergirl starts to develop some curves he's all like " Well, hello there, nurse. This we can work with.
