Titanic Thursday : the Marvel Age of Comics

You probably didn´t expect another new post on the blog while I still have six which are unfinished. But I have to shorten my Frank Robbins INVADER post somehow if I ever want to put a bow on it. And seeing as three of my last four posts are DC Comics centric it´s time for Marvel Comics content.

Now I don´t want to sound like a broken record but as regular blog visitors already know more than one year ago I had to part with almost my entire comic collection to come here to Spain. But what I haven´t mentioned that often is that when I sent the few books I held onto from Germany to Spain I had to find some material to fill out the boxes to protect the books from damage. And since we had already gotten rid of anything that could be used as filler material I used old issues of MARVEL AGE, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, THE VAULT OF HORROR and THE HAUNT OF FEAR to do that.

And before you all scream : " Sacrilege ! Burn him and the horse that he rode in with ! " I am talking of REPRINTS of the classic EC Comics. I´m not that far gone that I would use the original cult comics as filler material.

Anyway, even though I had fully planned to throw the comicbooks I had used as filler material away as a comicbook afficionado in good standing I could not do so without reading them first. Especially after loosing most of my comics. In any case, maybe it was mostly nostalgia but after reading the MARVEL AGE issues I got really excited about what a great time it was reading Marvel Comics when they basically ruled the comicbook market .

I immediatelly planned to write a post about it but like so many posts it was postponed indefinitely until I could hereby rectify the situation.

Now not all the material in here is from MARVEL AGE but I think it fits the theme. Anyway, like we used to say in those days : Make Mine Marvel !

Regular blog followers may remember that I promised to post more videos in tribute to Stan " The Man " Lee after he passed away ( at least I think I mentioned it on the blog, maybe I just made that promise to myself and never told my readers ) but with all the changes and the surprising deaths in my family, the Covid virus, the multiple lockdowns, me having to get rid of basically everything I owned without a proper send - off ( which is one reason why I started my new GOODBYE GERMANY series , that way I can - at least partially - give my comicbook collection a fond farewell ), the move to Spain, my laptop almost self destructing and loosing most of my bookmarks it has been a while. This is a special one that I have saved for a good while but I feel that enough time has elapsed that I can post it now.

Now our next videos are kind of a re - post since I put the 1990 horror film Ambulance on the blog before but since I found the spanish version ( which is not as censored as the german version ) I thought this is just what the doctor ordered ( bad pun intended ) plus it´s very fitting for the post since this is the movie that is always ignored when people talk about Stan Lee´s movie roles. In all the videos about his movie cameos they only show his appearances in the Marvel movies - and sometimes Mallrats - but this one is never mentioned. What´s even more insulting is that Stan Lee did not just have a cameo, he played Eric Robert´s boss and had a lot of dialogue. On top of that Eric plays a comic artist in the film and the scenes where he is at work were filmed at Marvel Comics and you can see a lot of iconic artwork with Marvel characters everywhere even if I´m not so sure about the Doctor Strong character. According to imdb we also get to see Gene Colan, Larry Hama and Jim Salicrup. So I have no idea why this movie never gets mentioned when they talk about Stan Lee´s cinematic work.

Besides Stan Lee and James Earl Jones the movie also stars the wonderful Janine Turner with whom we all fell in love with as sassy and sexy pilot Maggie O´Connel on Northern Exposure. She plays Cheryl which makes it understandable that Eric Roberts spends half the movie looking for her.

And Janine didn´t even get to display her bonerinducing 40C - 22 - 37 measurements like in Tai Pan where she was basically toplessss or her guest appearance on Mike Hammer where she played a nymphomanic sexbomb hellbent on dicktaming Mike Hammer in the worst way, wearing a super ventilated red shirt. Boy, that shirt had so many cleavage windows that it was basically just a lot of thin stripes which only barely covered Janine Turner´s spectacular breasts leaving not much to the imagination.

And with that thought in mind we come back to Tai Pan in which Janine Turner doesn´t wear only one, nor just two but at least three different dresses that show off her breast features. And when I say " show off her breast features " I mean expose her upper body completely while still managing to cover up her nippels. It´s like she´s advertising motorboating and the only thing missing is a sign that reads " Best double breasted dick massages in town. Special offer : bring one friend and get a deepthroat blowjob for free. No age check. " I have no idea how the costume person got away with this or if it is even historically accurate and I don´t care.

For those new readers who might have missed it you can find more about the Mike Hammer tv show, cult siren Janine Turner and PLAYBOY´s 34C - 23 - 33 Playmate Of The Month for March in 1982, Karen Lorre formerly Karen Witter in my latest Frank Miller tribute . And while you´re at it you might also want to check out my Frank Miller DAREDEVIL spotlight posts from 2017 and 2019 as well as my post on his work on the SPIDER - MAN books .

Someone Matt Murdock´s red garbed alter ego has tussled with in Frank Miller´s DAREDEVIL run is the incredible Hulk and since I don´t know when I will get the chance to write my next HULK post I have decided to include a few Hulk videos here starting with one about his first cartoon from 1966.

If there is one constant in the incredible Hulk comicbooks it is change as every new writer brings his own take on the jade giant. Which can be confusing not only for the uninitiated newcomer but also the seasoned veteran of four colored entertainment so to make things easier here we have a video explaining all the different versions of the Incredible Hulk.

Apropos, coming back to Stan Lee´s cameos while he didn´t appear in an episode of the regular The Incredible Hulk tv show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno he did appear in the tv movie The Incredible Hulk On Trial which also featured the first live action on screen appearances of Wilson Fisk a.k.a. the Kingpin and Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil. The latter one even wore an all black oufit instead of his trademark red one much like he first does in the excellent MAN WITHOUT FEAR mini series by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr and I don´t know if they were influenced by the tv movie but it is also Matt Murdock´s first costume in the latest Daredevil tv show.

Right now I don´t read a lot of monthly comics, especially after saying goodbye to my vast comic collection. As I mentioned previously I am not even trying to rebuild my collection since I don´t know how much time I have left. On top of that it looks like we have to move once again and my relatives who have helped me sort through all kind of messes these past two months are just itching to throw the few comics that I managed to keep and those I bought since coming to Spain in the nearest garbage bin.

What is it with people nowadays that they always keep asking you for how much money you think you can sell your comicbooks and tell you not to buy more because you keep loosing money. I don´t think I have ever seen this kind of reaction when people are collecting other things like records or toys or stamps. When people encounter collectors of anything else they never even mention selling everything they spent a lifetime to build. But with comicbooks it´s always : for how much you think you can sell all this ?

Like selling your comicbook collection is the end goal. There is something seriously wrong with our society when the preconceived notion in most people´s head is that you only collect comicbooks to sell them because what else can you do with them ? Certainly not read them because that diminishes their re - sell value and that´s all that is importnt. Forget enjoying them. So I don´t know how much of them I can keep. Anyway, even before I knew we have to move - again - I was very cautious with buying comics especially monthlies. There are some I only bought to read and others who will become part of my new permanent collection. Aside from that I have tried to continue with the few german comic series I am still reading among them foremost the publications of Weissblech Verlag.

They always manage to top themselves because not only do they keep churning out their classic series like HAMMERHARTE HORRORSCHOCKER, CAPTAIN BERLIN, ZOMBIE MAN or ZOMBIE TERROR they recently added a new instant hit to their stable : LUBA WOLFSCHWANZ ( Luba Wolftail ) by Weissblech´s one man show Levin Kurio and Eckart Breitschuh. I don´t know how Eckart does it but is seems he spent most of the time during the quarantine working on this comics because he is just churning out these issues at a rapid - fire pace with no end in sight. So who is Luba Wolfschwanz ? Think of Conan the Barbarian in the body of Power Girl.

The premise of the story is that Luba is the only survivor of the slaughter of her entire barbaric tribe by the roman empire and now she´s out for revenge going down a list of all the roman soldiers who participated in the massacre. Along for the ride we have former slave girl Gelata whom Luba pressed into service since she can´t read the list who starts out as a reluctant sidekick until she discovers that Luba has no interest in all the loot they find during their journeys. The book is a funny romp with a lot of the usual tropes but being a Weissblech Verlag publication it includes the obligatory amount of brutal fights, gore, monsters and some nudity.

We come to something more family friendly : episode one of Mega Man.

As a big fan of the EC Comics I´ve done a number of posts on the subject : I did a special black and white tribute post to William Gaines in 2017 with two full stories, one by Johnny Craig and one by George Evans, in 2018 I did two posts, one for the horror books and one for the other titles EC published and I also did special spotlight posts for Jack Davis and a black and white post with the complete original artwork of the story And All Throughout The House by Johnny Craig from THE VAULT OF HORROR 35.

I didn´t write any EC Comics posts in 2019 but in 2020 I wrote a post in honor of the late William Gaines with stories by Johnny Craig, Graham " Ghastly " Ingels and Joe Orlando - who got a spotlight post - as well as one in tribute to the late Bernie Krigstein and two about Johnny Craig . And last but not least last March we had the obligatory William Gaines tribute .

Besides publishing the best comic in the genre of horror, science fiction, war, crime fiction and many others ( which every comic book fan or comic book creator worth his salt needs to read to understand what you can do within the medium of comic books ) he also created a whole new genre with the creation of Mad magazine when his competitors, censorship and the Comics Code Authority forced him to cancel his most successful titles.

One of the artists who got the famous MAD Magazine off the ground and running with Harvey Kurtzman was Will Elder and if you are interested in comic history, good satire comic magazines or just good art you should check out those early issues - and you can read my spotlight post on him .

Now besides being a master at cartooning and bringing slapstick humor to the printed page Will Elder was also very adept at depicting the female form which probably was a very big factor in MAD´s rise in popularity.

Will Elder´s faible for drawing sexy women was also the reason why Harvey Kutzman chose him to bring one of his most famous creations to life : PLAYBOY´s LITTLE ANNIE FANNY, a spoof on Harold Gray´s LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE - which would have been a perfect role for bodacious 36E - 22 - 34 blonde bombshell Pamela Anderson. As it is she played the 90s version of sexy Little Annie Fanny, which is my smooth segueway to our next part.

There are a lot of pretenders to 70s jiggle television, but few ever offered the jiggle of V.I.P. This series wasn’t just a showcase for security expert Pamela Anderson , she also had a bevy of bodyguard sidekicks, incuding the lovely five foot three 36DD ( !!! ) - 24 - 34 live wire Natalie Raitano.

Pamela was without a question the big pull of V.I.P. and the reason why the show happened in the first place but Natalie brought her a - game whenever the stories were about Nikki and I would have liked to see more of her. Thankfully Natalie did appear in a bikini shooting on the show.

People always wondered if there was a rivalry between Erika Eleniak and Pamela Anderson and if that was the reason Erika Eleniak left the show .

There are two different versions of the story but I think this article from Jake Davis on FETCH SPORT - which also takes an in depth look at Erika Eleniak´s life and career - comes closest to the truth. According to Pamela Anderson when she auditioned for the role of Jordan Tate in UNDER SIEGE Steven Seagal wanted to put her body to the test on the casting couch.

" When he saw me rehearsing the part where Jordan comes out of the cake he insisted on me giving him a personal strip show. He changed my costume to two strings of fabric thinner than shoe laces and after he got a huge erection in his pants he made me strip naked and wanted to act out a sex scene with me that was not in the script. And when I didn´t want to do it he told me that the next girl would get the role instead. "

" I refused but Steven Seagal convinced Erika Eleniak to let him use her as his personal blow up sex doll during the entire shooting of the movie. He fucked her brains out six ways to Sunday. That´s how she got the role."

Erika Eleniak for her part denies these wild sex orgies ever happened.

" I learned a lot on that shoot watching Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey work. It was a hard shoot and I spent many long hours in Steven´s trailer. Yes, he was merciless drilling me but not during sweaty fuck marathons that lasted all night long where he relentlessly pounded every orifice of my body. We were just rehearsing scenes not sex scenes that were more explicit than porn movies. All these rumors that Steven tried to break me in with his giant member are just a product of Pamela Anderson´s sick fantasy. But it still was an incredible learning experience for me. "

Now this is a case of a lot of " she said / she said " and I don´t know who is telling the truth and who is lying. So I am just going to list a few important facts and let my readers come to their own conclusion. Fact number one : various female co stars of Steven Seagal like Brenda Bakke have gone on record that he tried to use his position to get them to assume the position. Fact number two : it has been 95 percent confirmed that 90s erotic sexsation Shannon Whirry - who later became famous for doing it for real with her male co - stars on camera like in her movie Ringer - had to go through all the positions for her debut role in Out For Justice.

Fact number three : Pamela Anderson has never denied that she partook in the behind the scenes BAYWATCH fuck marathons so it would be weird that she would lie where UNDER SIEGE is concerned but openly admit that she tested every male BAYWATCH cast member´s member at least once.

Fact number three : Erika also never denied to have participated in the uninhibited BAYWATCH boning marathons where all the guys took turns at pounding her into submission until she deepthroated Billy Warlock into becumming her willing personal sex slave with whom she also had a relationship in real life. Fact number four : Erika Eleniak not only was the Playmate Of The Month July in 1989 she also enhanced her boobs to the size of two giant twin torpedoes to get the 34C - 24 - 32 measurements that left all viewers drooling and gave all her male co stars giant erections.

Fact number five : Steven Seagal himself put the role of Jordan Tate into the script of UNDER SIEGE. Fact number six : Gary Busey has gone on record that Steven Seagal was extremely determined to have explicit sex with Erika Eleniak and that he constantly tried to add a love scene to the script so he could really get down and dirty. Whenever Gary was on the set he took her under his wing but he wasn´t always there to protect Erika.

And for more on such baywatchable babes like Erika Eleniak ( who is of course most famous for her incredibly steamy striptease in UNDER SIEGE ), Krista Allen ( best remembered for getting her freak on as french blow up sex doll EMANUELLE in 8 made for tv movies ) or natural born go go dancer Carmen Elektra check out my latest BAYWATCH SPIN - OFF POSTS.

The most famous of a veritable plethora of incredibly hot women that went through the revolving casting doors of BAYWATCH is without any doubt Pamela Anderson and it is beyond belief that so far I have only mentioned her in the first ever Casting the Justice League of America movie post where I naturally cast her as Power Girl ( a role she was born to play ). Because Pam An was not only the very first candidate in my hugely popular SEARCH FOR POWER GIRL series over at my old boob - centric blog.

No, she also is on my TOP TEN MOVIE STRIPTEASE list thanks to her boner inducing wet & wild opening scene from the movie adaption of Dark Horse Comics BARB WIRE. Most of this was cut off in the german version which is one of the reason why the movie flopped so much in movie theaters while the video cassette of the original US version became such a huge success.

You can say what you want about Steven Seagal but he sure does have an eye for talent because it has been said that he included Erika Eleniak.

And if that rumor is true he has earned my eternal gratitude for giving the entire world one of the best film striptease ever. And her manager who persuaded to take this part and use her stripper skills to the benefit of mankind. I bet he got something out of the deal as well. I know that if it had been me there would have been a few private sessions of rehearsing.

So far we have a movie for my spanish speaking visitors and for my english speaking visitors so I wanted to include one for my german audience. I found MĆ¼nchhausen from 1943 while looking for GroƟe Freiheit Nr. 7.

Speaking of MĆ¼nchhausen, there also is a - very loose - adaptation of the MĆ¼nchhauen tales in the czechoslovkian film The Fabulous Baron MĆ¼nchhausen from 1961 by special effects pioneer Karel Zeman who also did the best adaption of the legend of Krabat to date. You can check out my special MOVIE RUMMAGE TABLE post on that classic children´s movie.

Closing things out we have another signature song by german songwriter Reinhard Mey. This is his working man ode " I´m a plumber by profession".
