Deja Vu. The strange feeling you have seen or experienced something before. As longtime followers of TALES FROM THE KRYPTONIAN know this happens to me a lot especially when it comes to posts I THINK I´ve already written. But when I look for them I can´t find them because I HAVE NOT written them, I only think I did. One such post is my post for Irv Novick .
Because he came up in the birthday section of my post about Jack Kirby´s superhero Sandman appearing in Neil Gaiman´s brilliant SANDMAN book and as usual when I don´t have any material about a certain topic, comic writer or artist I am writing about I turned to the internet to find stuff I could include in the post. And - also as usual - I found a lot of Irv Novick art ( which included some black and white ) and I made a special folder.
I even looked for most of the color pages that went with the original art.
On top of that I made a mental note to do the post as soon as possible but here we are more than two years later and it still has not happened yet.
And I would not be doing this post now ( especially since I still have four more posts to finish ) if it wasn´t for the fact that a. ) there is something else I planned on doing and where I already prepared most of the material but then got sidetracked and never got around to do it ( but we will come to that in the bonus section ) and b. ) there has been a lot of Marvel Comics content in my last posts so I need some DC Comic stuff and since the anniversary of Irv Novick´s birth was on April the 11th he got elected.
Now I have to be honest I was never the biggest fan of Irv Novick´s art.
Nevertheless he was one of the artists who returned Batman to his gothic roots during the Bronze Age with writer Frank Robbins and besides illustrating many memorable stories of Batlore like Bruce Wayne Rest In Peace, The Ghost Of Wayne Mansion, The Ghost Who Haunted Batman, Shadow Of The Cat, The Cat Who Would Be King, This Way Lies Madness, Asylum Sinister, This One´ll Kill You, Batman ! or Angel Or Devil ? in BATMAN 216 which finally revealed butler Alfred´s last name he co - created the Ten - Eyed Man in BATMAN 226 and the Spook in DETECTIVE COMICS 434 with Frank Robbins, launched the Denny O´Neil penned The Joker series and drew the introductions of future Teen Titans member Duela Dent in BATMAN FAMILY 6 and the Electrocutioner in BATMAN 311.
Besides the Batman books he also worked on WONDER WOMAN, TEEN TITANS, THE FLASH, SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN QUARTERLY ( which was a title that was done exclusively for Ehapa Verlag, the company that published DC Comics in Germany which is why I could not find any color pages for the original art from this ) and SUPERMAN`S GIRLFRIEND LOIS LANE.
During his first stint for DC he mostly drew romance comics and war comics like OUR ARMY AT WAR, OUR FIGHTING FORCES, ALL - AMERICAN MEN OF WAR and G. I. COMBAT. He also introduced The Silent Knight ( not to be confused with The Shining Knight who was a member of The Seven Soldiers Of Victory and who appeared in the STARGIRL tv show ) with writer Robert Kanigher in the first issue of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD.
Regular blog visitors are already aware of this but I am repeating it for our newer customers : the videos I use for the bonus section tend to pile up because I don´t get to post as often as I´d like to and on the other side because I just find too many that are informative, relevant, entertaining, educational or plain funny and which I want to share with my audience.
That´s why lately - and some of my more adept readers may have noticed this - I try to cram as many videos about a certain topic into a post. In this instance it´s all about Batman and as regular blog follower know I always try to cover five categories : comicbooks ( duh ! ), movies, tv shows, cartoons and music. Previously I just picked one video for each category but as I am saying farewell to my old home - Germany - and hello to my new but at the same time old home - Spain - I have tried to find videos in three different languages so that no part of my audience feels left out.
As I said, I tried to include as many videos about Batman as possible ( don´t worry there are still a lot of Batman - related videos for future posts ) but I have also tried to avoid redundancies. So while there are three videos about Batman in the comicbooks one is in english, one is in spanish and one is in german. Which means that aside from those people who speak all of theses languages most of my readers will only watch one of them or two at the most. There is also a video about Batman´s use of guns in the comicbooks in this section but since it is a different kind of video - the other one being about a specific comicbook - I don´t think it is a redundancy. It´s the same with the videos about movies in this post.
There is one discussing a certain Batman movie but there is also one from Brandon´s Cult Movie Reviews because I think they are quite different in their approach : one is a serious discussion while the other one is more like a fun watchalong with some witty remarks. And by including them blog visitors can either watch both or pick the one they prefer. Or if they are not in the mood to have their head chewed off and prefer to watch a movie they can also just do that. As always there is the odd video that falls into none of the categories but which I think might be of interest to the discerning viewer and I hope I have included some that pique yours.
But that´s enough of an explanation and introduction so let´s get to the meat and potatoes of this entertainment / pop culture trivia section.
BAT BLAST FROM THE PAST or THE BAT WHO REMEMBERED YESTERDAY
Well, it seems that I´m not the only one who doesn´t have Irv Novick very high on his list of favorite artists because I could not find a good video about him. So instead I´m going with MY definite Batman artist Jim Aparo who collaborated with two other powerhouses - John Byrne and Jose Luis Garcia Lopez - on The Untold Legend Of Batman which was the BATMAN - GRAND DESIGN of its time bringing all the different stories from decades of Batlore into a cohesive re - telling of the origin and history of Batman.
Now what a lot of people don´t know is that there were actually two companion pieces to The Untold Legend Of Batman : one about Superman and one about the Legion of Super - Heroes. Yes, as unbelievable as it may sound to Today´s comicbook reading audience back then the Legion of Super - Heroes was one of DC Comics bestsellers and one of THE teenage super hero books long before UNCANNY X - MEN or THE NEW TEEN TITANS came around. Now in Germany the three books were published at the same time - in hardcover and softcover - and while it was pretty easy to buy the Batman book the other two books were a little harder to come by.
EXTENDED BAT FAMILY REUNION or THE BRAVE AND BOLD BAT FRIENDS
We come to one of THE best Batman cartoons ever - at least in my humble opinion. I know that there are a lot of Batman hardliners out there who prefer the more modern version of Batman who is basically undefeatable and never makes mistakes instead of the one we got in Batman : The Brave And The Bold but for me this fun romp was a perfect callback to those zany, iconic Batman team - up stories by Bob Haney and Jim Aparo.
WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD EVER THINK OF EATING A MISTLETOE ?
Also not as highly regarded as it should be is Tim Burton´s second Batman movie Batman Returns. Which in my opinion is a real shame because in the first Batman movie by Tim Burton Michael Keaton´s Batman was almost overpowered by Jack Nicholson´s now iconic portrayal of the Joker while he had more breathing room in this one. Also nothing against blonde 36C - 24 - 35 sexbomb Kim Blasinger ( although she somehow managed to be outclassed by a toon version of herself in Cool World ) but Vickie Vale´s romance with Bruce Wayne felt a little forced whereas there is more chemistry with Michelle Pfeiffer´s Catwoman. Which for me still is the best portrayal of Catwoman on screen in the last three decades. Not the best Catwoman costume - that honor goes to afro american all natural 34E ( !!! ) - 24 - 36 aphrodite Halle Berry a. k. a. the sexiest woman on the planet - but the best live action version of Catwoman in the last 30 years.
That in itself is quite the accomplishment but the downside to that is that most people forget Danny DeVito´s incredible version of the Penguin or Christopher Walken´s muted Max Shreck - who is the real villain of the movie. Anyway, maybe you agree with me that Tim Burton´s Batman Returns is a forgotten gem of comicbook movies and if not you might want to give it another try. Who knows ? The movie might surprise you.
NOS VEREMOS A LA MISMA BATI - HORA POR EL MISMO BATI - CANAL !
Which has redeemed itself in the last decades is the campy 70s Batman tv show with Adam West and Burt Ward since people stopped hating it for what it isn´t and started to appreciate it for what it is : a love letter to all the crazy stuff in the Batman comics but also an accurate representation of the actual state of Batman comics at that time. You have to keep in mind this was before the return of the Dark Night Detective Batman instigated by Denny O´Neil and Neal Adams . This was still in the Comic Code Authority period where crimes could not be depicted realistically and the motives of the criminals could not be shown as understandable.
We are talking about the period of Zebra Batman here, the 1,000 different color costumes Batman here, the Batman who fought aliens any other day.
Compared to that stuff the tv show is a realistic grim and gritty crime beat. Anyway, I chose this episode of Ayer Nomas for all those readers who still think I made it up that in most spanish speaking countries Bruce Wayne is known as Bruno Diaz, Richard Grayson as Ricardo Tapia, Police Commissioner Gordon as Commissionado Fiero and Barbara Gordon as Barbara Fiero. I am not sure why they decided to do that - maybe they thought the names would be too difficult to pronounce or they didn´t want to bother with having to use them in the dubbing or if they simply thought more spanish sounding names would go over better with the audience or a combination of it - but ever since we got El Guason instead of the Joker and Gatebula instead of Catwoman. Although I have to admit Baticueva sounds better than Batcave and Ciudad Gothica has a nice ring.

The only problem with that is that over the decades since the character´s inception writers have had different interpretations of that rule from Batman not even so much as being able to touch a gun to Batman using a gun as long as he doesn´t fire it to Batman using all kind of firearms except for guns there have been many times Batman has used firearms and guns in the comics.

Since we already have so many iconic versions of Batman in this section I also wanted to include an audio drama from cult company Power Records as for a lot of people out there this was their first exposure to Batman.
FEELINGS OF DEJA VU PART TWO : WELCOME TO THE DAILY GRIND !
Deja Vu. The strange feeling you have seen or experienced something before. The second part where this happened is Mtv´s dance show The Grind and I know what you are going to say : I have already mentioned The Grind on a few posts and I have included some videos from this show.
But most of the clips from The Grind I included in my posts have been deleted and I also never got around to do a full cult siren post or at least a better spotlight feature in my entertainment section. I kept mentioning that one of these days when I have the tranquility and time I have to make a post about the sexy chicks from Mtv´s The Grind but I never did.
So you might ask yourself what has changed ?
Well, for one I realized a while ago that I don´t have much time left on this world and if I don´t want to have any regrets I should stop putting things off and do them while I can. But all this would not have meant anything if I hadn´t found some new videos on YouTube from The Grind.
Because it makes no sense if I don´t have any new content to post. Now mind you, being from the era they are the quality of these clips is not the highest one but it is good enough to make some animated GIFs of the hot dancers on this show. Which is the most important part because the videos can be deleted from YouTube but then the GIFs will be still here.
And forget about finding photos of any of the bonerinducing dancers on the internet. This show is so old that almost nobody remembers it and the few that do don´t have any pictures to post. So I went through all of the new videos of The Grind to find any that had some of the regular rump - shaking sexbombs plus some of my personal favorite teenage titwonders.
Because not all of the clips had some interesting girls in them or at least girls that are interesting to me.And then I had to narrow it down to those videos which not only had the girls I was looking for but also those where the lighting let you make out more than a few shadows and the camera guy filmed them in a way that you could actually see the important parts.
And then the last step was finding those short moments and dance moves that were deserving of investing the time and effort to turn them into animated GIFs. Because you have to keep in mind that making the GIFs not only takes a lot of time but also that this is time I am not spending on finishing other posts. At first I did this for a whole day but after that I could only dedicate a few hours every day to making them which is why it took me more than two week to finish them. Or better said finish the first batch up to a point where I could make a decent post. Which is one of the reaon why it bugged me so when I realized I had not done the post yet.
But I was waiting for a post where I didn´t have a lot of cult siren - related stuff and the problem with that was that most of my spin - off posts lately were done to cut some stuff from the cult siren section so that base was alredy covered. But now I finally have a post with a bit more leeway there.
Going into media res I should probably start with a little history lesson and explain to the younger generation what Mtv´s The Grind was. Watching tapes with british 90s porn superstar Sarah Louise Young was expensive for a young strapping lad at his sexual prime with no disposable income so because this was before the internet when you could find naked women 24 / 7 I had to rely on the tv for hot babes like Adrienne Barbeau or Markie Post and one show I watched - and also taped - religiously was The Grind.
It was a dance show and even if the cameramen were all gay and turned the camera away whenever they filmed a hot chick shaking her stuff like there´s no Tomorrow there were a few instances were they filmed them - short as they were. In the beginning the shows were mainly in the club but after a while they did BLOCK PARTY episodes and some shows under the Brooklyn Bridge before hitfing the beaches and the beach houses.
Compared to the club episodes the beach or beachhouse episodes were much better because there was more light and you could see all the hot chicks better. And because it was often very hot they didn´t wear as much and often just sticked to swimsuits and bikinis. While the early beach and beachhouse episodes were quite good there were more big breasted babes in later episodes but the episodes where they were at the beach or at Las Vegas were these nubile sexbombs with booming bodies wore only bikins were simply the best. Because they gave us what we really wanted to see : hot babes in bikinis shaking their huge XXL racks.
Especially the Hawaii shows showed quite a lot of sexy bigbreasted babes.
Because it was on so early I always had to program the vcr to tape it ( ask your father, no, better ask your grandfather if you want to know what that means ) and in some instances I came late to school because of this.
The girl in the animated GIF below for instance was to blame that I came late to school on one day because I just could not take my eyes off her.
Another time I was sad because there was an episode where you could see her naked boobs in all their teenage glory underneath her shirt for a fraction of a second or at least her bra ( you can see by the way she´s dancing above how that happened ) and I erased that part by mistake.
Back at that time I did quite a few mixtapes - other people did this with music I did it with music clips and The Grind. Since there were only just a few good scenes in every show ( much more in the beachhouse, beach or Hawai show and most of them wore itsy bitsy bikinis ) I put all the clips on one videotape. Of course I had to come up with my own names for them.
Well, at least the important dancers which were especially hot and good at shaking their stuff. I always made two kind of tapes : the mastertapes which contained all the good clips of the shows, various mixes and loops of the babes and of course slowmotion scenes. And the mixtapes which had the best clips and special mixes of individual honeys who had earned the special slow mo treatment for excellently executed stripper moves.
Most of the dancers on the show were not professional dancers which for me was the special thing of the show. I don´t know how old they were but there were some chicks with incredibly huge hooters. If they were teenagers there were a lot of them who were pretty gifted for their age.
And I´m sure the girl with the orange bikini top with the overdeveloped oppai is solely responsible for my sexual predilection for asian women.
But back to Mtv´s The Grind. Back then I spent a lot of time doing my mastertapes of the latest shows. Of course there were not only the hot dancers on the show that made it such a huge success with the male audience. There were musicians appearing live like Aaliyah and they had guest presenters like HOME IMPROVEMENT´s Debbe " Double D " Dunning.
Well, she didn´t wear that bonerriffic outfit but only because it was a beach edition and she wore a bikini. And Debbe looks terrific in a bikini.

We have one last Batman video for my spanish readers about THE JUDAS COIN. This often overlooked original graphic novel was initially part of Walter Simonson´s SOLO issue but he had so many ideas for it that it became it´s own thing. I had this in my comicbook collection and while it is not one of the indispensible Batman stories it is an entertaining trip through the DC universe filtered through the lens of Walter Simonson. Plus there is a nice bookend to Walt´s most famous serial in the Bat universe.
And we are staying with my spanish audience with the 1979 martial arts action movie El Felino - original title Jaguar Lives ! - featuring Joe Lewis plus Christopher Lee and Ringo Starr´s wife all natural 36C - 24 - 36 queen of b - movies Barbara Bach both of whom appeared in a James Bond movie : Chritopher Lee as hitman Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun and Barbara Bach as sexy Major Anya Amasova in The Spy Who Loved Me.
Lest my german audience thinks I have forgotten them we have the tv production The Twelve Jurors which is a remake of the 1963 movie Twelve Angry Men with Henry Fonda. Sorry for the low quality but I just had to post this because it´s not often that you come across such forgotten gems of german tv history. Despite being a remake it manages to do its own thing thanks to a star studded cast that includes Siegfried Lowitz - best known for the cult crime series The Old One - and Mario Adorf.

We have another callback to my youth in Germany with the czech comedy duo Spejbl & Hurvinek from czech puppeteer Josef Skupa, just one of the many marionette shows that was part of the german children´s television.
Speaking of marionettes, we have the most famous one in Pinocchio´s Revenge with Rosalind Allen who was also in Stephen King´s Children Of The Corn II : The Final Sacrifice. I included Brandon Tenold´s movie review of it in my DEFENDERS post and besides having the ugliest Pinocchio ever this movie is mostly still remembered for Rosalind´s too brief nude scene.

Coming back to children´s television we have the first episode of Jumanji - The Animated Series based on the movie of the same name with the great late Robin Williams which in turn was based on the famous board game. Which I didn´t know existed - the cartoon, not the other stuff.
We have two more categories to check of for my spanish readers and we start with episode twelve of the fifth season of I Dream Of Jeannie. It´s one of the episodes where the viewer gets two times as much Barbara Eden as usual since she not only plays regular Jeannie but also evil Jeannie II and I have to say that I might like Barbara Eden better with dark hair.
