It's a Flash Friday with Carmine Infantino !

As my laptop reminds me constantly that my OneDrive is full and " will start synching soon " it's time to put more original art out there. And since my last post was a Marvel Comics post I have decided to continue my recent FLASH FRIDAY revival with the Carmine Infantino tribute post I promised my readers in my last FLASH FRIDAY : CHAIN LIGHTNING post .

Now seeing as this is not my first post about DC's THE FLASH nor my first tribute post to the great late Carmine Infantino you might think that we could get right in medias res but seasoned blog veterans probably won't be surprised that there are still a few things I have to mention. First off we are starting at the back end of Carmine Infantino's run on THE FLASH since that is the period I read the most issues from. Naturally I did read some of the more iconic issues that introduced a lot of the things that people are now more familiar with from the CW tv show then from the comicbooks like Kid Flash Wally West or the concept of parallel earths.

But it is his later art style that had become more cartoony - ish that I am more familiar with and it's the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the name of Carmine Infantino. So we will safe his earlier FLASH work for our next post. The second thing I have to address is that it was quite difficult to match the covers of the german edition of DER ROTE BLITZ by Ehapa Verlag because sometimes they did not use the original cover and instead used the splash page from inside of the comicbook.

By the way you can find the original cover for THE FLASH issue 317 at the top of the post. Now I don't know why the german publisher decided to turn the splash page into the cover in this case - maybe they thought Barry Allen pulling a prank on a black disabled kid ( what a monster, offending two minorities at the same time ) was just a bit too much for the german readers to swallow or maybe it was because the cover does not feature the villain of the issue - but with issue 310 of THE FLASH it might have been done because on the original cover the Justice Society Of America's Doctor Fate is featured more prominently than the Flash.

There is also the case of THE FLASH issue 333 where I found an unused cover where DC Comics decided to go with a completely different one.

Is it just me or is the slogan of " The new DC there's no stopping us now. " at the bottom of a cover depicting a bunch of people dismantling the Flash's statue creepy and unsettling ? Apropos my own impressions of the series, I always found it strange that they added Goldface to the Flash's Rogues gallery as it made more sense to have him as an antagonist for Green Lantern. Back then the Green Lantern ring still had its weakness to yellow so fighting a villain who was clothed in yellow - or gold - from head to toe made things always especially tricky for Hal Jordan. As a foil for the fastest man alive on the other hand gold does not give you much of an advantage. The only thing gold does is it makes you slower since it weighs a ton and I'm not exactly sure how that helps fighting the Flash.

Before continuing I guess I should address the new Flash movie with Ezra Miller and I just want to say that while I found his cameo in the Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover cool I was never on board with how Flash was portrayed in the DC Comics movies. I don't know what all the backlash at Ezra Miller is about and I don't know if I WANT to know but like with all super hero movies lately I held off with watching the Flash movie and apparently it was the right move because I have heard only bad things about it. So I guess like with Spider - Man : No Way Home I will just wait with watching it until it is available on amazon prime or on free tv. But for those who are interested in the movie Pedro Angosto over at MAN OF BRONZE is sharing his thoughts about it although you should probably read this after watching the film since it contains a number of spoilers.

After the CW show The Flash became such a huge success everybody and their dog made videos about the Scarlet Speedster to cash in on the big hype which in turn means that after a while most people had shot their bolt - pun intended - in regards to everything even slightly related to speedsters in comicbooks in general and DC Comics Flash in particular.

So finding more recent videos was more difficult especially since FLASH FRIDAY had become a weekly feature on this blog from June 2016 to April 2017 and I posted the majority of every Flash video that was available.

SUPERMAN CAN DO ANYTHING THAT THE FLASH CAN DO ONLY SLOWER

Now Today's FLASH FRIDAY video comes from one of the most unlikely sources - COMIC POP - who not only do Flash videos every few years but anybody who has seen one of these Flash videos - or the Justice League videos where he plays a major part - knows that Sal ( who is the guy who explains the stories to the others ) is not what you might call the biggest Flash fan. And I get it. If you only approach the Flash with the Silver Age mentality that he is the member of the Justice League who has a fourth of Superman's powers - he can run fast - the Flash appears to be boring.

It is an outdated and narrowminded way to see the Flash but I can also understand it. Most comic readers have characters they avoid because of preconceived false notions they have about them like that Superman is boring because he is too powerful or Captain America is always in line with everything the american government does that could not be farther from the truth and I don't pretend that I don't do the same with some.

And I can't even point anybody to the current output of DC Comics to show them otherwise because most of the people who actually write super heroes understand them or even like them. That is one of the main reason why for the last 20 years DC Comics has tried to turn their villains like Harley Quinn or Deadshot or anti heroes like Catwoman into heroes.

Anyway, coming back to Sal from COMIC POP while he is not a big Flash fan he at least has learned to appreciate him and the place he has as one of the most important cornerstones of the DC universe. So the Flash episodes of COMIC POP are always entertaining because on one side he tries not to piss off too many Flash fans while on the other side he freaks out completely about the things Flash fans love like there being multiple Flashes at the same time. That has always been a thing that baffles me.

That comicbook fans claim that if there is more than one Flash the second speedster is redundant but like Sal points out there are dozen members of the Batfamily that do the same thing Batman does only not as good - including many Robins - and nobody has a problem with that.

Also everybody loves a multiple Doctor episode so why should multiple Flashes - or speedsters with other names - make a story less interesting ?

Case in point this episode of COMIC POP is about Terminal Velocity which involves all the speedsters of that time since the book was gearing up for the big issue 100 so this story ran through issues 95 to 100 of THE FLASH.

Now I would like to include some links for posts that tackle these issues but the thing here is that most - but not all - of the issues in my FLASH FRIDAY series are about Paul Ryan's stint on the book and since he came in AFTER issue 100 this is a story I have not discussed on the blog yet.

That said Mike Wieringo was the cover artist on these - and a few other issues - and while I have used some of these covers on various post I did make one specifically about Mike Wieringo's work for the Flash titles .

I don't know if I will ever get to do a FLASH FRIDAY post about TERMINAL VELOCITY or any of the other big storylines I had planned when I had my old laptop with my old picture archive like BORN TO RUN or THE RETURN OF BARRY ALLEN which is another reason why I chose to include this.

Because as it is I am more wrapped up in continuing the FLASH FRIDAY posts for which I actually have some material - the CHAIN LIGHTNING saga as well as more Carmine Infantino and Wally West Flash - than to do new ones that may be important but for which I don't have any material.

HE'LL SAVE EVERY MAN, EVERY WOMAN, CHILD WITH A MIGHTY FLASH

As any comic afficionado worth his salt knows neither Barry Allen nor Jay Garrick was the first hero called Flash because there was one before them. I am talking of course about Alex Raymond's groundbreaking comic strip Flash Gordon which starting on the 7th of January in 1934 appeared in 130 newspapers and was read by 50 million people around the world.

Flash Gordon is not only one of the best american adventure comic strips it also influenced a lot of artists and the science fiction genre in general.

Now I have already posted an episode of the original Flash Gordon movie serial with Buster Crabbe but that was ages ago so I guess it's okay to include this video with the first seven episode in the german dubbing.

And speaking of the original Flash Gordon movie serial, that in turn was the inspiration for a turkish knock - off Flash Gordon's Battle In Space that predates the Dino De Laurentis movie since it came out in 1967 which is the subject of Today's cult movie review by Brandon Tenold.

Coming back to DC Comics hero called Flash I just had to include another video about the groundbreaking FLASH tv show from the 1990s because this was MY Flash series and the great John Wesley Shipp was MY Flash.

With the Flash Gordon episodes we already have the tv series covered for my german audience but the way videos have been disappearing I wanted to post one of the few german dubbed episodes from the 1990s Flash tv series as long as it is still available. Initially I wanted to save it for my next post in the Chain Lightning saga but since it looks like that is going to take longer than expected enjoy it while it lasts. Looking at the preview picture for the video I wonder if I already mention that I had the biggest crush on Amanda Pays when the show first aired ? Yes, Mark Waid is often hailed as the inventor of the Speed Force but it was actually invented by Mort Weisinger and Mark Waid just came up with the name. What also set Johnny Quick apart from other speedsters was that he got his superspeed by reciting or visualizing a mathematical formula and that to turn off his superspeed he used a counter formula.

Oh, and he was so fast that he could fly. I won't get into all the details about his marriage and divorce from fellow Justice Society Of America member Liberty Belle and their daughter Jesse Quick ( who got both of her parents powers ) who also is in Terminal Velocity but here is a link to another instalment of Brian Cronin's series And Of Course at COMIC BOOK RESOURCES where he takes a look at a story in which Johnny Quick has to double his speed because a villain learned the secret to his powers.

Speaking of speed I almost cut the next part because since I started the post - over one and a half years ago - the material I included here but most importantly the videos on YouTube have continued to disappear.

The only reasons why I decided to keep it in are because the more stuff that is in the post the better and more interesting it is for my readers and if it is shorter that is even better plus chances are that if things continue to progress as they have up to this point by the time I put the final bells and whistles on the post all the videos will have been deleted and then I can cut everything and none of my readers will be the wiser.

I have no idea why in Germany they omitted She - Ra from the title since this is her introduction to the general public. This movie is basically the first five episodes of She - Ra : Princess Of Power with just a few minor edits and it aired on tv in episodic form six months later.

Originally I had included a regular episode of He - Man but through sheer luck I found the full movie in german although I am not sure with which dubbing. Some of the more casual blog visitors may not know this but in Germany everything is dubbed. They have been doing it for decades and that is why Germany has the best dubbing in the world. Which may be a topic for a future pop culture section. Anyway, for those who can watch - and understand - the video from Sean David TV there are apparently two dubbed versions and not everybody likes both of them. By the way, am I the only one who thinks that the quality of those videos have improved since Sean David has stopped following a script and is freestyling them ?

To be honest with you I am surprised the movie is still here.

Sheesh, how big must someone's inferior complex caused by the fact that the world's greatest - fictional - spy is not an american but british be that said person - or persons - feel the need to defame and insult an entire nation in three feature films with a fourth one possibly on the way ?

Coming back to more pleasant things, that was thankfully not Fabiana's start in Hollywood ( talk about a traumatic experience ) and her first claim to boob fame was in 1987's Summer School. What I also have to mention because it is somewhat comicbook related is that Fabiana Udenio appeared in two episodes of the science fiction cult classic Babylon 5 since the creator of the show was none other than J. Michael Straczynski, acclaimed writer of such fan favourite series like RISING STARS and MIDNIGHT NATION ( and you can find my list of Top 5 Comicbook Series By J. Michael Straczynski in this Gil Kane post from 2016 ). One of the main attractions of that show - at least for the male part of the audience - was Commander Susan Ivanova played by Claudia Christian although I doubt that she wore an outfit as skimpy as this one.

Now of course in Germany all of the Nightmare On Elm Street output was highly censored ( Nightmare On Elm Street 2 : Freddy's Revenge was cut so bad then when I watched the uncut version they looked like two different movies ) but there was a less cut ( pun intended ) version that aired on the private tv broadcasting channel RTL2 where it was part of Hilde's Wild Horror Show a program that went on the air after midnight.

Which - as all good comicbook afficionados know - was bought by Marvel Comics which in turn was bought by Disney. Which makes it de facto a Disney property so you could say that she was sorta kinda in a Marvel Comics adaption in the same vein as a lot of people count the Men In Black movies as Marvel Comics movies since the series was also first published by Malibu Comics.

WHO WATCHES THE SQUADRON SUPREME or IF POWER CORRUPTS

Speaking of Marvel Comics appropriating comic properties from other publishing companies not always do they buy them. In some cases they just give them different names and costumes and put them into their own comics. The best known example of this is the Squadron Supreme which is their version of the Justice League. There is a brilliant 12 issue maxi series by Mark Gruenwald and illustrated by Bob Hall, Paul Ryan , John Buscema , Jackson Guice , John Beatty, Sam De La Rosa and Keith Williams which I prefer to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's WATCHMEN .

I know it's sacrilege but I just rate SQUADRON SUPREME higher because it is not a deconstruction but a celebration of super hero comicbooks and it managed to put the toys back in the box for other creator's further use.

For me Alan Moore had it easy because he created new characters while Mark Gruenwald had to work with an ensemble of existing characters with a history and also fit it into an established universe's continuity.

Plus I am a fan of the sorely underrated Paul Ryan so that's a big plus.

Anyway, while I like SQUADRON SUPREME more than WATCHMEN most people don't feel the same way and to change that - at least a bit - the powers that be at Marvel Comics brought in the aforementioned writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Gary Frank ( with whom he had already collaborated in the also aforementioned brilliant MIDNIGHT NATION ) to put a more realistic and adult spin on things and so that they could show nudity they published ( the first part of ) it under the MARVEL MAX label.

THE NAME IS BOND, JAMES BOND JUNIOR. WAIT, WHAT THE F - WORD ?

Since I was forced to mention Austin Powers it's only fair to give if not more than at least equal time to the really best spy in the world - who happens to be british but the cool kind of british not the stereotypes those movies we all want to forget help spread - and as usual we have acapella group Maytree providing the musical segueway for this part.

Now as far as comicbooks of James Bond go - be it adaptions of movies, books or new material - I have only dipped my toe into it because while I know that there are quite a lot of those out there ( especially in recent years ) the only story I went out of my way to buy was Permission To Die and that only because it was written and drawn by one of my favourite writer / artists Mike Grell. Published by Eclipse Comics Permission To Die was their second James Bond comicbook the first being the adaption of the Timothy Dalton Bond movie License To Kill also by Mike Grell. Unlike License To Kill the three part prestige format series Permission To Die was a new story and a follow up to the Sean Connery Bond movie From Russia With Love. As longtime followers of the blog know I am a huge Mike Grell fan so I don't have a good excuse why I never got the License To Kill comic but I did manage to get Permission To Die. Of course I had to sell it together with my comicbook collection before coming to Spain.

The following video has a lot of different James Bond comics including - of course - Mike Grell's Permission To Die but also work by the likes of Paul Gulacy ( whom regular blog visitors may remember from SHANG - CHI MASTER OF KUNG FU with Doug Moench ) as well as some James Bond Jr issues and we will come to him in the cartoon section of this.

Now I don't know if the old JAMES BOND comics is as good as it is going to get and if it makes sense buying any future James Bond releases since they effectually character assassinated James Bond better than Austin Powers ever could leaving him to the ridicule of lesser capable female agents and inexperienced little girls with No Patience To Deal With Men I mean No Time To Die. They did him dirty and Daniel Craig deserved a proper send off. Good going girls, killing a franchise that lasted 60 years.

As promised we come to the James Bond Jr cartoon show and already the title is misleading since the titular character is James Bond's nephew NOT his son so he is not a junior. Also the cartoon series is not in canon since James Bond was always described as an orphan and only child.

Frequent blog visitors may have noticed that I switched the video I had included here with an episode of Saturday Morning Cartoons and I am not sure if James Bond Jr really qualifies as a cartoon show about justice but besides that we also have new episodes of Inspector Gadget, Police Academy, Sherlock Holmes In The 22nd Century, Wild West Cowboys Of Moo Mesa, Bravestarr, Galaxy Rangers, Saber Rider & The Star Sheriffs, Men In Black, Cops and last but not least Jean - Claude Van Damme's Timecop ( although the last one has been cut to fit a PG14 rating ).

Maybe it's just me but the first time I heard Pflaster ( could mean band aid but also cobbled pavement although I think they are going with the first ) from Ich + Ich I really thought this was an official Bond song. Okay, hear me out on this one, it's not so far fetched since Germany often do their own songs to promote movies or put in the german dubbing. As it turns out this is only the german Bond song we never knew we needed.

Hopefully this put you in the right mood for one of the best James Bond parodies in history. And no, of course I am not talking about Mike Myers mental self - affirmation caused by an inferior complex after finding out the greatest spy on the planet is not american ( Can you imagine what a movie he would have made if he ever found out that the greatest spy there is, there was and there ever will be is Anacleto Agente Secreto ? Just think about all the racial stereotypes. ) but of a classic tv show from the 60s ( almost 40 tears earlier ) by the legendary Mel Brooks : Get Smart or how it is known in Germany Minimax Or The Unbelievable Adventures Of Maxwell Smart and Super Agent 86 in the spanish world.

My first idea why they called the Get Smart show Super Agent 86 for the spanish speaking audiences was because of the anime Cobra based on the science fiction manga series by Buichi Terasawa which was super popular in the latin hemisphere but as it turns out Super Agent Cobra aired a full decade after it so it probably was the other way around.

The story of the manga is partially based on the Phillip K. Dick story We Can Remember It For Your Wholesale which was adapted into the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall ( we are ignoring the cineastic abomination with Colin Farrell on this blog ) and when the anime series was shown in countries like Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Panama or Colombia it was heavily censored because of the high content of sex and violence.

Since I already mentioned Freddy's Nightmares I also want to include the review of A Nightmare On Elm Street since Buck Fernandez has gone to the trouble of reviewing all of the movies from this franchise. So we will be seeing more of this franchise on the blog in some upcoming posts.
